Reaction To Cheese?

I know I am allergic to dairy and normally have an upset stomach if I accidentally eat some. Daughter is also allergic and for her it was ear and sinus infections in addition. I have also had a lot of ear and sinus infections over the years so perhaps dairy was the cause.

Last night we ordered some tacos, beans and rice at a fast food place where we've gotten safe food many times. We just went to a different location and apparently they were not so careful. I said, "no cheese" but they put the cheese on. My daughter spotted this and they made new ones, but we wound up getting 3 instead of 4 and when we got them home, there was a bit of cheese on there. I was very hungry and didn't have anything else ready to eat. So I picked off one tomato slice and all of the lettuce that looked like it had cheese on it. Ate them.

Not long after I felt very dizzy. BP was 91/71. Then my face began to feel weird. I got this sort of numb feeling between the sinuses and the eyes and it eventually went into sinus pain. Then my ears began watering. I felt so lousy I went to bed for an hour. Later I had a few stomach cramps. Then I went from the chills to sweating. I feel much better today, although more tired than usual.

Anyway... Has anyone ever had a reaction like this to dairy? I suppose it's possible it wasn't the cheese at all and I was coming down with something.

Well, I guess I answered my own question. :( Daughter and I went out to eat tonight and had chili, salad and fries. A meal we've gotten at least dozens of times before with no problems. I said "Just onions" on the chili. But after eating a few bites of it, I noticed a yellowish gooey string hanging from my spoon. Saw another little shred of cheese nestled among the onions. I thought I picked it all off, but I must have ingested some. Could have even been melted into the chili. Gah!

Same symptoms as before only now I have a sore throat too. Felt dizzy. BP dropped to 90/70. Face felt numb around eyes and nose and now nose is all stuffy, runny and have sinus pain.

I will be sooo glad when school is out and dance is over for the year. We've been running around out and about so much that I'm not home to make dinner and we have to dine out or get takeout. Can't believe I am looking forward to cooking but I am!

To me that sounds like a true allergic reaction (instead of an intolerance reaction)... Especially the drop in BP. You need to be careful with this, allergic reactions can get worse with repeated exposure.

Thanks! That's what I was afraid of.

Yes, I have had a reaction like that to dairy. Even the tingling thing...

Desperately need a vitamin D supplement. I've reacted to most brands I've tried.

I do not know this, but since they are labelled gluten-free, and are not really a product that could easily be contaminated when making them (there would be not flour in the air of such a facility, for example), I don't really see contamination as something to be concerned about for this type of product.

Thanks @Scott Adams. Do you know if Kirkland Signature supplements share facility and production lines with other products containing gluten?  I'm worried that I'll react to this brand just like I did with other gluten-free labelled supplement brands.

This is a really common area of confusion. Most natural cheeses (cheddar, Swiss, mozzarella, Parmesan, brie, camembert, and most blue cheeses) are inherently gluten-free, and you’re right that the molds used today are typically grown on gluten-free media. The bigger risks tend to come from processed cheeses: shredded cheese (anti-caking agents), cheese spreads, beer-washed rinds, smoke-flavored cheeses, and anything with added seasonings or “natural flavors,” where cross-contact can happen. As for yeast, you’re also correct — yeast itself is gluten-free. The issue is the source: brewer’s yeast and yeast extracts can be derived from barley unless labeled gluten-free, while baker’s yeast is generally safe. When in doubt, sticking with whole, unprocessed cheeses and products specifically labeled gluten-free is the safest approach, especially if you’re highly sensitive.
