What A Nice Surprise!

I just needed to share that everyone in my family, (on my dad's side) have been really supportive of my dietary restrictions. I live in LA, my dad lives in New Zealand and he is out here for the week and his two brothers have come in from Washington to see him. I thought it would be a total nightmare with by gluten-free cf diet, but they have been extremely helpful and really interested in Celiac! I figure this is how we raise awareness. They're all amazed at how much I know about it, and my main reason is because like many, I haven't had the best experiences with doctors.

Also, I was at a lunch thing today and didn't eat because I get sick EVERY time I eat out, and naturally everybody asked why I wasn't eating. I told them it was becuase of some severe food allergies and someone asked and I told them it was a gluten allergy and she was totally interested. We talked about it for at least 30 minutes and she wants to get her son tested. Then, another cousin of my dad's came over and he has a son who is 10, has excezema (sp?) asthma, wheat allergy, soy allergy and SEVERE nut allergies. He is also overweight and him and his wife decided they are going to get him tested for Celiac disease becuase he is 10 years old and really overweight and can't seem to stop eating and has all kinds of other symptoms! I was so excited they were actually interested in hearing what I had to say. I just had to share this good news with all of you!

P.S. THe mom owns a bakery here in LA and she said she may make it a dedicated gluten-free bakery! I'll keep everyone updated with that.

That is great that you getting people to listen to you that way, people that i work with are slowly asking me why I am eating the foods that I do. Im sure that they apprieate not smelling my gas as well, I also apprieatie not having the gas to pass.

A friend of mine is in the bar trade most of his life and has never heard of lines being mixed for different type of beers and ciders. Better to stick with cans.

Thanks very much for confirming my suspicion @Scott Adams! That helps a lot because I'm really trying to track down and get rid of these sources of cross-contact and so I'm going to just rule out the draft ciders and hope that helps. Also @Rogol72 its nice to hear you haven't had a problem on that side of the pond - draft cider lines being used for cider only certainly sounds like the right way to do it, but I think that must not always be practiced over here!

I didn't ask a doctor about this actually. I did ask several doctors a long time ago and they told me gluten has nothing to do with hashimoto's. One of them told me to do a gluten challenge to test for celiac, but at the time I was in graduate school so couldn't afford to be even more ill than I was. If you have the symptoms, I really don't advise you to do a gluten challenge. It messed me up mentally and physically for months. At the same time, I benefitted from doing the challenge in the sense that it convinced me that all my symptoms were truly from gluten - even stuff like insomnia! So now I am terrified to eat gluten, whereas before I would have a little once in a while and not notice anything dramatic.

I am in a similar situation where I can't feasibly do a gluten challenge but have all the symptoms and I have 2 celiac genes. I'm curious if your doctor advised you to eat as if you had a diagnosis or if they were more dismissive about it.

Negative, although I had most of the symptoms of celiac disease. I now eat as if I had a diagnosis.
