Anyone At Ucla Or In The Area?

Hi everyone,

I'm brand new to the site! I have been gluten-free for only a few months, and everything I have read here so far has been so extremely helpful. In September, I'll be heading down to UCLA (from the Bay Area) for my first year of college. Eating in college is always difficult, and with celiac, it will be even tougher. Is there anyone else attending UCLA, or at least living or going to school in that area? It would be great to get a group together!

Hello,

I am 17 and I am obviously in High School. I live in Studio City which is not that far from UCLA...about 25 minutes. I am in the process of starting a support group for Celiac Teens. I don't know if you'd be interested...it will be for kids/teens 12-20? If you want, I will keep you posted. My email is knshore@hotmail.com if you ever want to talk and I can tell you the local health food store to you if you want.

Kassandra

GOOD LUCK!

Thanks Kassandra!

I'd love to be involved! That sounds like a great idea, and I'm sure we could find many more people in the area to join. Do you know of any great food places (retaurants or stores) in Westwood that have gluten free options? I wont have a car next year, so it will probably be pretty tough to get any farther from campus.

Hi Ladies - I'm in LA myself (though a bit too old for your support group ;) and there's a Los Angeles Celiac Yahoo group you can join that I've found to be a great resource. They also maintain a list of gluten-free/gluten-free-friendly restaurants all over the area.

If you know anybody who is interested, let me know. I have a long list from a celiac place with lots of names, so I will be contacting them. I am thinking of having a meeting in the first week of september. I'll let you know.

BTW, do you have an email?

All sounds great, except that I wont actually be in the area until late September, when school starts. If you decide to do it later, maybe early October, then I could come!

No problem. I plan to have meetings every couple months. One again before the holidays that you may be able to go to?

Kaitlin,

There's a Whole Foods in Westwood that has your usual supply of gluten-free stuff. I think you could walk/bike from ucla.

It could well be a new intolerance developing.  Does your diet incorporate pure oats i.e. those safe for coeliac consumption?  I find I can only tolerate a certain amount, same goes for dairy in fact, then I start to get gastric symptoms.   Or have you started consuming a new type of gluten-free bread, or more gluten-free bread than normal, that might contain oats?  I remember reading a post on this forum from a woman who had started to eat a lot of loaves made with oat flour and her coeliac symptoms kicked off again.  I am sure you know this, but some coeliacs cannot tolerate pure oats.

I eat a lot of dairy but its intermittent is this burning so I would assume it would happen all the time. Plus I have been tested for lactose intolerance  etc and I am fine and the other symptoms of that I don't get. As a aside  my dad died last month after a long illness so I wonder if the stress of that might be a influence as a bodily reaction to stress.

You should be fine.  You may start feeling better within a few days.  Someone who is very low in thiamine may notice improvement within hours.   Did you get the NeuroMag  or another magnesium supplement?
