Glutened At My Fav. Resturant!

I'm a little sad...I got glutened/cc'd at my fav restuarant...one that up until recently that I have had no problems at! I got sick after I ate there about two weeks ago...thought then it was something I had eaten earlier in the day, didn't think it was there. Then I ate there yesterday for lunch and got sick within an hour and it was the first thing I ate that day...so I now know it was from there.

Here is what I get...It's a mexican restuarant.

Chicken Fajitas( no seasoning on the chicken, bell peppers, onions)

Corn tortillas

Mexican Rice

REfired beans

lettuce

sour cream

They assure me they haven't changed anything and that there isn't any gluten...but I'm reacting to something and this is the only place in town I could eat safely...until now! Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!!!!

Thanks, Jess

Could it have possibly been from CC rather than the actual ingredients containing gluten? I think that's generally the source of restaurant glutenings. Perhaps the cook had just handled bread or flour tortillas before making your meal. I hope you're feeling better soon.

I'd bet 99% that its cross contamination....it is a risk we take when eating out, unfortunately.

Any of those things could have been cooked on/in something that had gluten, or a utensil was used that had gluten, or something had been dipped in the sour cream, or the staff could have touched flour tortillas all night before grabbing the cheese......

Hope that your recover quickly!

Thanks for you ideas!!!

jmommy,

I think frustration is the best way to put it!!!!!

You've been here longer than I, so I'm guessing you know that some corn tortillas have gluten in them. Maybe the product itself has changed, and the restaurant isn't aware of it. Is there any way you can check the ingredients on their corn tortillas?

That would be very discouraging to suddenly have a problem at a "safe" restaurant. I'm always so thankful to find someplace like that.

I wish you the best. Let us know what you find out.

I checked their corn tortillas yesterday when I went....no gluten in them!!

I'm not sure what to do...I know the owner but he doesn't speak spanish and can't really convey anything to the cooks!!! He checked the sour cream for me and brought the corn tortilla packages out to me so I could read them...has to be CC. Which is kind of a bummer...it would be easier if there was Gluten in something...then I just wouldn't eat that item!!!

Thanks for you thoughts!!!

Perhaps triumph dining cards would help in this case? I believe they have ones that are written in Spanish. I'm pretty sure they emphasize the importance of avoiding CC, though I have to admit I've never actually read mine. It may be something to look into though if the cooks only speak spanish. Also, just a thought, maybe a waitress or busboy there knows spanish and english fluently and could help you communicate your special needs to the kitchen. Just a thought.

It could be cc, but I wonder if its their sour cream... perhaps they switched brands and didn't think to mention that. Give a call and check with the manager that does the food ordering and see if that is the culprit. (often times different staff do the mis or prep and put things into smaller containers for the lunch/dinner crew, so those who served you might not know that a new vendor is being used)

Its a slim chance, but I am rooting for you to be able to eat out there again!

Just a thought...

Do they heat the corn tortillas on the same comal or machine as the flour ones? My daughter got glutened that way last week. I asked about the chips (they fried them in a corn-only fryer) but I forgot to ask about the tortilla machine (corn & flour share the same machine). I skipped the tortillas and didn't get sick.

This treatment looks promising. Its aim is to provoke immune tolerance of gluten, possibly curing the disease. It passed the phase 2 trial with flying colours, and I came across a post on Reddit by one of the study volunteers. Apparently, the results were good enough that the company is applying for fast track approval.  Anokion Announces Positive Symptom Data from its Phase 2 Trial Evaluating KAN-101 for the Treatment of Celiac Disease https://www.reddit.com/r/Celiac/comments/1krx2wh/kan_101_trial_put_on_hold/

BTW, we've done other articles on this topic that I wanted to share here (not to condone smoking!):

Hi everyone  This has been a crazy year so far... How many people actually get entire sensory overload from gluten or something similar ?  My jaw is going nuts ..and that nerve is affecting my upper back and so on ...  Bones even hurt.  Brain fog. Etc  I had eggs seemed fine.   Then my aid cooked a chicken stir fry in the microwave because my food order shorted a couple key items .   I was so hungry but I noticed light breading and some ingredients with SOY !!! Why are we suffering with soy ? This triggered a sensitivity to bananas and gluten-free yogurt it seems like it's a cycle that it goes on.  The tiniest amount of something gets me I'm guessing the tiny bit of breading that I took one tiny nibble of ...yikes ..im cringing from it .. Feels like my stomach is going to explode yet still very hungry 😔  How long does this last?! Thank you so much

I have had orthodontic work done. The 3M invisalign material was no problem. BUT my retainers are another matter. They seemed okay for a few months. Now, however, they cause a burning sensation on my tongue, gums and insides of my lips. The burning sensation is now spreading to my throat. I notice it when I breathe. This is annoying and interferes with my enjoyment of eating. I am visiting with my provider tomorrow. We'll see where this goes from here.
