Bulk Food Stores

When I was at a bulk food store the other day, I noticed that they had a section with potato flour, buckwheat flour, rice flour and the like. I contemplated buying some stuff for any future baking but then started to worry that gluten cross contamination might be an issue.

I was worried about the possibility of scoops being accidentally switched resulting in contamination. These flours weren't too physically close to regular wheat flour but the possibility still worried me. Has anyone had any experience with buying flours or similar items from bulk food stores? Are they generally safe or not worth the risk? I do my best to be very careful so sometimes it's hard to tell if I'm being unreasonably careful.

Thanks

Did you speak with the store reguarding that????

It is a valid concern...I haven't tried bluck buying like that....Don't have the option where I live!

Good Luck!

I don't think I have that option either. We have Costco and all but not the type of bulk foods she was at. I agree you should ask the store.

I would only buy it if the store is knowledgeable about cross contamination and if they don't switch bins or switch around locations of the products. I only buy bulk at Bob's Red Mill because they are very knowledgeable and they do not switch the bins and flours around. They even have all the gluten free flours together. Buying in bulk can be risky, but if you feel that it is safe where you shop, you can save lots of money. I'm never moving away from BRM. B)

If I lived in Portland, I wouldn't move either. The BRM store is like a candy store! So many great things to buy there.

just a thought, but probably the majority of the people buying these gluten free flours would also be concerned about cross-contamination so the risk may not be too bad. personally, if we had bulk gluten free flours available to us, i would give them a try for my girls.

Scott I also have different symptoms than most people. It affects me bad. Stomach ache, headache, nauseous, heart racing, whole body shaking, can't walk then my throat starts to close. It attacks my nervous system. The only thing that saves me is a 1/2 of Xanax...it calms down my nervous system

Scott Adams. I was dealing with a DR that didn't care about me being celiac. I repeatedly told him that I was celiac and is everything gluten-free. He put an acrylic lens from j&j. I called the company to ask about gluten and was told yes that the acrylic they use has gluten....then they back tracked immediately and stopped talking to me. The Dr didn't care that I was having issues. It took me 6 months and a lot of sickness to get it removed.... which can only happen within 6 months. The Dr that took it out said that it was fused and that's why I lost vision. If they would have removed it right away everything would be fine. He put in a silicone one that was gluten-free and I've had no issues at all in the other eye. Do not do acrylic!

Welcome @Martha Mitchell, I too would like to know more about your prior lenses, and especially about the potential of gluten in lenses. In theory this should not harm most celiacs, as the autoimmune reaction normally begins in the gut, however, in those who are super sensitive or have dermatitis herpetiformis it may be a potential issue.

It's most likely going to be a celiac disease diagnosis based on your blood test results, but wait for your doctor to give you a green light for going gluten-free, as they may want to do additional testing. This article has some detailed information on how to be 100% gluten-free, so it may be helpful (be sure to also read the comments section.):
