Hi

I am pushing the celiac info at work these days and have come across an issue I need some help with

One of the girls here has a son who is 6 and autistic. She is wondering of the effects of gluten free on autistic children. She has done alot of research in diet with these children but not gluten specifically. They are apparently very focused on anything with wheat. This apparently being like a natural high for them.

Anyone have any experience with this or any related info or research?j

There are many articles out there, some anectodotal evidence - others with science.

All I know is that after going gluten free (diagnosed celiac), my daughter with aspergers improved academically and socially. For her - a huge part is that she felt so much better physically that she would learn better - about social skills as well as academics.

Most diets for autism eliminate casein too.

I can't help wondering how much research your colleague has done on diet and autism--the most shouted about and seemingly most promising dietary treatment for autism involves a gluten-free, casein-free diet.

Have her look up Unlocking the Mysteries of Autism by Karyn Seroussi, and Special Diets for Special Kids by Lisa Lewis

I don't have an autistic child, but I've been researching autism since learning that there are similiarities in Autism and CFS/ME and here's a few of the websites I've found that I thought were interesting.

This first one is a direct link to a chart about which diets have helped Autistic children. And the second link (BodyEcology) goes into how healing the digestive tract is necessary to help Autistic kids.

      As far as I know and I have made severalonline searches, celiac disease disease has not been recognized as a cause of migraines or any eye problems. What I wrote must have been confusing.

      Interesting, when I suffered for a few months with ectopics I noticed that carbohydrates would cause indigestion and bloating in my stomach, then that would lead to my heart skipping beats, and I could feel it in my throat, it was very unsettling.  My last serious bout of this was after eating a Muller Rice Pudding for breakfast.   I happened to be wearing a 48 hour halter at the time and cardiology picked it up, but they weren't worried about what they saw. There was some British doctor who'd made some videos on the Vagus nerve that I remember watching at the time which made sense of what I was experiencing, there did seem to be some sort of connection.

      I asked my cardiologist about stopping vitamins.  He said his tests account for all detectable vitamins from sources other than food.  I only need to stop them for a couple of days.  He has me keep records of meds and vitamins I've ingested over the past 10 days and prior and he does his calculations.

      Reply to treats I try and eat to bring up the glucose. Sometime I get up 3 times a night and eat something. I don't think food is the issue. A lot of the food they say should help doesn't.  Many mornings my level is 59 and I feel sick, sometimes for hours. It has been recommended I go to an Endocrinologist.
