Anyone Else Have An Intolerance To Alcohol?

Before I started having D every day from Celiacs (pre-diagnosis), I noticed that, over the last few years, I have the same reaction whenever I drink alcohol of any kind (doesn't matter if its gluten-free or not). The D usually starts the day after I have the alcohol and lasts for a day or two. It's usually pretty bad.

Since being diagnosed, I have had only wine, and I'm still having the same reaction. I thought maybe once I went gluten-free this problem would go away, but it hasn't.

I was just wondering if anyone else has this problem and what it may be caused by. I really don't want to give up wine for the rest of my life!

I'm guessing alcoholic drinks aren't digested well by anyone with a leaky gut. You might be sensitive to sulfites as well.

I have found that I cannot tolerate any grain alcohol. I also cannot tolerate wine due to a yeast issue.

I can have tequilla, rum, and potato vodka. I now make my own vanilla for use in baking (with the potato vodka) and cannot have any of the Enjoy Life products that use vanilla. I don't know if it is a grain alcohol issue or not, only that I cannot have it.

Hollyberry, before being diagnosed with coeliac, drinking alcohol used to give my system a good cleanout. It wasn't too drastic, but noticeable, and I would have more stomach issues than the hangover.

Now, unfortunately I do not drink alcohol much any more. What I do drink does not upset me, unless I have inadvertantly drank a grain alcohol. I like drinking, but I guess I am a teensy wensy bit scared that if I drink too much, I might accidently eat gluten, or even worse, not care if I ate it.

My husband has similar symptoms to you, only a tiny bit of alcohol, makes him sick. He gets an awfully uncomfortable bloated stomach the next day, with a bit of D and he is off colour for a few days. We are guessing it is alcohol, and as he has not drunk any for quite a few weeks and has not been plagued with any niggly symptoms. I have to admit here, that he has been a heavy drinker in the past, and it might just be his past catching up with him. Also he does not have coeliac and is a bread muncher, but with Mango mentioning leaky gut and maybe sulphite sensitivity she might be on the right track, as doctors have not been able to figure it out. They were thinking a stomach ulcer and worse.

I am a moderate to slightly heavy drinker. I don't drink every day, but it seems I have the symptoms every day (the terrible D) because it will last 2-3 days after I drink. Before I knew I had celiacs, I would drink beer or wine (sometimes liquor, but rarely), and it didn't matter which of the three I had--I still always had the same reaction.

How do I know if I have leaky gut? Is that something that goes along with celiacs? I'm not sure how much sulfites I consume; I'm a vegetarian, so I would think not much (sulfites are in things like bacon, right?).

I guess I am going to have to give up drinking completely, but I don't want to. Sometimes it seems like the only way I can relax, and I enjoy it. (I don't do it to get drunk, btw)

Im so frustrated and still getting the run around trying to reprove my celiac disease which my past primary ignored for 25 years.I understand that theres a ray of medical that doctors are limited too but not listening and telling the patient ( me) that im not as sensitive as I think and NOT celiac!Correction Mr white coat its not what I think but for cause and affect and past test that are not sticking in my medical records.I get sick violently with foods consumed, not eating the foods will show Im fabulous. After many blood draws and going through doctors I have the HLA- DQ2 positive which I read in a study that Iran conducted that the severity in celiac is in that gene.Im glutenfree and dealing with related issues which core issue of celiac isn't addressed. My skin, right eye, left leg diagestive issues affected. I have high blood pressure because im in pain.Im waisting my time on trying to reprove that Im celiac which is not a disease I want, but unfortunately have. It  has taken over my life personally and professionally. How do I stop getting medically gaslight and get the help needed to bounce back if I ever do bounce back to normal? I thought I was in good care with " celiac specialist " but in her eyes Im good.Im NOT.Sibo positive, IBS, Chronic Fatigue just to name a few and its all related to what I like to call a ghost disease ( celiac) since doctors don't seem to take it seriously.

@Martha Mitchell, your reaction to the lens implant with gluten sounds like it could be an allergic reaction rather than a celiac reaction. It is possible for a celiac to be also allergic to gluten as it is a protein component in wheat, barley and rye.

Scott I also have different symptoms than most people. It affects me bad. Stomach ache, headache, nauseous, heart racing, whole body shaking, can't walk then my throat starts to close. It attacks my nervous system. The only thing that saves me is a 1/2 of Xanax...it calms down my nervous system

Scott Adams. I was dealing with a DR that didn't care about me being celiac. I repeatedly told him that I was celiac and is everything gluten-free. He put an acrylic lens from j&j. I called the company to ask about gluten and was told yes that the acrylic they use has gluten....then they back tracked immediately and stopped talking to me. The Dr didn't care that I was having issues. It took me 6 months and a lot of sickness to get it removed.... which can only happen within 6 months. The Dr that took it out said that it was fused and that's why I lost vision. If they would have removed it right away everything would be fine. He put in a silicone one that was gluten-free and I've had no issues at all in the other eye. Do not do acrylic!
