Hi,

I've never been to Cancun, but I don't think you'll find a gluten free store in Mexico - anywhere. You will, however, be able to find many naturally gluten free items in many places. You can have corn tortillas, tostadas, shrimp cocktails, fresh fruits, veggies, meats, tacos, salsa, pozole (yum), homemade ice cream, rompope (alcohol kinda like eggnog that's made and sold by nuns), jello with flavors like chocolate, vanilla, walnut, rompope, fruit flavors, as well as beans, rice, omelets, enchiladas (beware of the mole), etc.

Don't forget that you can bring Lara bars, dried fruit, and other non-perishable items (cereal, almond nut butter, rice cakes, hot cereal like cream of rice,...) into Mexico so that you will always have a safe snack. You can't bring dairy, fresh fruits or veggies, or meat into Mexico although jerky is usually ok.

There were a couple of other posts about Cancun on the travel board on here with very positive things to say. I'd recommend checking those out as well as any that talk about Mexico.

Have fun on your trip! When are you going? I'm going to central Mexico, in the mountains, for the last half of December. I'm just hoping it doesn't snow. Seriously, it snowed once when I was there!

You might see what "American" restaurants are there. I know there is a Margaritaville in Cancun and you can look up their menu online.

If you can get in touch with "Chef Dan" who is kind of the main chef for all the M'ville places, you might have some luck as well, if you can pre-plan your visit.

Ok ill try all that

Thanks

I just got back from the ROYAL Playa del Carmen (a resort in Playa del Carmen, owned by Real Resorts - www.realresorts.com) and had 5 fabulous days of gluten-free eating. They had 7 resturants and I was able to eat at every one. I emailed ahead and got a hold of Edwin, the head of Food and Drinks for the ROYAL in Playa del Carmen and in Cancun. He and his staff were so accomodating it was unreal! The food was fabulous and they were always very worried about me getting glutened. It was so ironic how you'd think the language barrier would cause issues, yet I had more care for my well-being there than I ever have eating out in the US! Viva Mexico!

The chef's were always watching me to make sure I was ok and liked it - I gave the thumb's up so many times that my thumb hurt!

I do know some of the resort resturants were also open to the public, so I'd suggest going there and taking your Spanish version of the celiac card - you'll be all set. If you have any trouble, just ask for the manager (I did get some deer in headlight looks from the servers that spoke very little English, but all of the managers were so nice and thoughtful).

Happy Mayan-Riviera Gluten-free eating!

Just a little vocab in case you need it.

manager is gerente (sounds like hair-ehn-tay)

boss is jefe (heh-fay)

chef is chef but with a strong ch sound like chair

My wife has Celiac and we stayed at the Hilton in Cancun. They were able to provide her gluten free meals at breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and even made gluten free bread for her every day. The staff was very knowledgeable and went out of their way to be helpful. We found it to be an excellent hotel at very low prices, and are thinking about going back in April.

We also ate at a Mexican place in the mall a few miles away, and a cape cod theme restaurant a short walk away. Both places were able to provide gluten free meals.

How can you trust that people wont contaminate your food??? I am so paranoid about eating out that it is affecting me in every aspect. mtraezme, how do you know that there is not any gluten in the salsa, or the tacos, or the cheese the way it has been handled?

Welcome to the forum, @Ben98! If you have been consciously or unconsciously avoiding gluten because of the discomfort it produces then it is likely that your blood antibody testing for celiac disease has been rendered invalid. Valid testing requires regular consumption of generous amounts of gluten. The other strong possibility is that you have NCGS (Non Celiac Gluten Sensitivity) which shares many of the same symptoms with celiac disease but does not have the autoimmune component and thus does not damage the small bowel lining. It is 10x mor common than celiac disease. There is currently no test for NCGS. Celiac disease must first be ruled out. Some experts in the field believe it can be a precursor to the development of celiac disease. Having one or both of the primary genes for developing celiac disease does not imply that you will develop active celiac disease. It simply establishes the potential for it. About 40% of the population has the genetic potential but only about 1% develop active celiac disease.

TTG blood test and total IGA tested on many occasions which have always remained normal, upper GI pain under my ribs since 2022. I had an endoscopy in 2023 which showed moderate gastritis. no biopsy’s were taken unfortunately. genetic test was positive for HLADQ2. extreme bloating after eating gluten, it’ll feel like I’ve got bricks in my stomach so uncomfortably full. the pain is like a dull ache under the upper left almost like a stitch feeling after a long walk. I am just wanting some advice has anyone here experienced gastritis with a gluten issue before? thank you

"Conclusions: The urinary iodine level was significantly lower in women with postmenopausal osteoporosis, and iodine replacement may be important in preventing osteoporosis"  Body iodine status in women with postmenopausal osteoporosis Low iodine can cause thyroid problems, but Iodine deficiency will not show up in thyroid tests.  Iodine is important for healing, its job is to kill off defective and aging cells (Apoptosis). Skin, brain fog, nails, muscle tone all inproved when I started taking 600 mcg (RDA 150 - 1000 mcg) of Liquid Iodine drops. Some with dermatitis herpetiformis, Iodine exacerbates the rash.  I started at 1 drop (50 mcg) and worked up to 12 drops, but I don't have dermatitis herpetiformis.

Thank you so much for sharing your experience and I found myself giggling with happiness as I read how your body reached such spring! And I hope that your current journey is also successful!! Definitely starting the food diary! So many amazing advices. And it’s very scary. It really hits all our soft spots as well as our confidence system. Most doctors I went thought I was underage despite being in my late 20s. Right now I look like am I twelve, but is also this body that’s taking so much, so I might as well love it too! Going to make the necessary changes and stay in this path. Thank you again! 🫶
