Dd Has Had Vomiting And Diarrhea Off And On

My 10 yr old dd (the only child of mine not diagnosed w/ Celiac) has been waking up with bad diarrhea and vomiting for a few months now. It only happens about once every 2 wks or so. Her tummy hurts for about half the day after these episodes. At first I though it was a lactose problem, so she started taking those children's lactaid pills. But it happened again last night and she had no dairy yesterday. I am taking her to the dr today, but I wanted some more opinions. I can't seem to connect this to any food. She is on gluten and she eats it nearly everyday, so that can't be it since the problem only comes up every once in a while. The rest of the time, her BM's are normal. It's not a virus because none of my other kids get it.

Any opinions?? I am at a loss, and I am not expecting much from her ped.

Thanks for any help!

Hi,

I feel so bad for your daughter--it must be awful getting sick like that on a regular basis.

I wouldn't rule out Celiac as a possibility-- since there is a family history. I know that for years before I was diagnosed, my GI symptoms seemed pretty random. It affects everyone differently.

Good luck at the doctor, and let us know how she does :)

My daughter's vomiting and diarrhea were sporadic before her diagnosis of Celiac. We just thought she was getting the stomach flu a lot until we realized that no one else was getting it. I hope you find some answers and that your daughter feels better soon.

I think it might be a good idea to request the allergy blood test and the Celiac panel.

Thanks Scott. They are gluten-free but cross contaminated.

Hi there @MCAyr I have a small umbilical hernia which came about during my second pregnancy.   I can just about see it, and feel it, when I stand or sit, but it is far less noticeable when I lie down.  I always know when I am putting on weight because I can get pain and burning near the site, funnily enough not on the hernia itself but either side!  I would imagine bloating could cause the same effect as weight gain. In my case I don't think it is my bowel protruding but a bit of fat  - sorry,  I realise this isn't painting a very pretty picture.  But in truth it is scarcely noticeable.  It has never really got bigger in size. I was rather hoping that it could be operated on but here in the UK they don't seem to operate on every hernia anymore.  My GP isn't remotely worried about it. In a way, I should be thankful - it is like an early warning system that I need to go on a diet! Cristiana

The hernia description would likely be unrelated to celiac disease, but you'd need to get it checked out by your doctor to be sure it's a hernia.
