:( I was diagnosed with celiac disease, My villi were nearly gone. Is it possable for this to have been caused by something else besides wheat ?? This is all still so new and overwhelming to me.

I've never heard of anything else that does it, perhaps someone else will chime in. The standard among medical professionals is that if there is villous blunting of the small intestine, then you have Celiac. There is no other possible diagnosis that I am aware of.

I agree, you have celiac disease.

It is hard at first but you get the hang of it.

Even though the most common cause of blunted villi is celiac disease, there are other causes.

Here is a quote from one website:

Open Original Shared Link

Although villous atrophy is not exclusive of celiac disease, it is considered a crucial finding. Other causes of blunted villi include tropical sprue, malnutrition, intolerance to cow's milk, soy protein intolerance, and infectious gastroenteritis. However, most of these conditions can be readily excluded on the basis of clinical history and laboratory data.

Here is another quote:

Blunted villi can be seen in conditions of bacterial overgrowth as well as partially treated gluten sensitive enteropathy.

I've also found some sites that say that a Cryptosporidium infection will cause blunted villi.

As far as I know, though, if the villi are nearly gone like the original poster said, it's more likely celiac. The other things I think cause damage but not as thorough damage.

To the original poster: one part of the process of learning to deal with a big life change is denial. It's normal to keep hoping that it might be something else, but hopefully you'll start feeling better on the gluten free diet and after a while you get used to it. :) hang in there!

Fortunately, all those other things are much easier to eliminate from the list of possibles than Celiac.

I feel so foolish! I just now found all your reply s ! I am still struggleing with denial.... the reason being that I wasn't feeling THAT BAD.

Thanks for all your responses!

In the future I will know how to find responses!

I have nearly become addicted to all the forums. I am trying to learn and understand, otherwise how can I possably expect my family and friends to understand.......

Thanks again!

This treatment looks promising. Its aim is to provoke immune tolerance of gluten, possibly curing the disease. It passed the phase 2 trial with flying colours, and I came across a post on Reddit by one of the study volunteers. Apparently, the results were good enough that the company is applying for fast track approval.  Anokion Announces Positive Symptom Data from its Phase 2 Trial Evaluating KAN-101 for the Treatment of Celiac Disease https://www.reddit.com/r/Celiac/comments/1krx2wh/kan_101_trial_put_on_hold/

BTW, we've done other articles on this topic that I wanted to share here (not to condone smoking!):

Hi everyone  This has been a crazy year so far... How many people actually get entire sensory overload from gluten or something similar ?  My jaw is going nuts ..and that nerve is affecting my upper back and so on ...  Bones even hurt.  Brain fog. Etc  I had eggs seemed fine.   Then my aid cooked a chicken stir fry in the microwave because my food order shorted a couple key items .   I was so hungry but I noticed light breading and some ingredients with SOY !!! Why are we suffering with soy ? This triggered a sensitivity to bananas and gluten-free yogurt it seems like it's a cycle that it goes on.  The tiniest amount of something gets me I'm guessing the tiny bit of breading that I took one tiny nibble of ...yikes ..im cringing from it .. Feels like my stomach is going to explode yet still very hungry 😔  How long does this last?! Thank you so much

I have had orthodontic work done. The 3M invisalign material was no problem. BUT my retainers are another matter. They seemed okay for a few months. Now, however, they cause a burning sensation on my tongue, gums and insides of my lips. The burning sensation is now spreading to my throat. I notice it when I breathe. This is annoying and interferes with my enjoyment of eating. I am visiting with my provider tomorrow. We'll see where this goes from here.
