Hi,

Are there any other adults with gluten sensitivity living in or near the radius of Middletown, New York?

If so, I would love to chat with you and possibly meet you.

I live in Poughkeepsie, NY and got diagnosed with Celiac 4/2004. I would love to talk with someone as well with Celiac. There use to be a support group out your way is that still happening?

Virginia

Hey Virginia,

I live in Poughkeepsie too! Have you been to the health food store on Rt. 9 in the Bugaboo Creek Plaza? I actually went there this morning, they have some good stuff in there! Well, I just noticed you were from Pok and wanted to say hello!

Wow, I see that we are really spread out. But be that as it may, it is still a great opportunity for us.

I ate at Bugaboo Creek when I was first diagnosed with gluten and the Manager and staff were great at accommodating my dietary needs!

Once in a blue moon we travel out to Poughkeepsie because it is a bit of hike for us. They do have a great comedy club not far from Bugaboo Creek.

I don't know if they still have the monthly celiac support group meetings in Middletown.

I look forward to making a connection with other people with gluten sensitivity and other health related disorders.

Hey local Celiacs! This is my first post on celiac.com, however, I have been gluten free for 6 yrs. I am 23 and live in New Windsor. I went to one or two of those Middletown support group meetings, but my parents really helped me out and we have learned so much along the way. There is probably THE best health food store off 17K in Newburgh (off exit 6 or 7 on 84 depending where you are coming from). The prices at that store are the lowest and they seem to have a great selection.

If any of you need help with anything, please shoot me an email. I work for a liquor distributor and go out to eat a couple times a week. Basically you just need to explain your food allergy to the staff and have them check for you so you will be fine.

Also, for those Celiacs or wheat sensitive people, I just saw in the paper that a completely Gluten free/Wheat free bakery will be opening in Chester soon. Their number is 845-469-1992. I just signed up on their mailing list by calling them.

Hi NYers I haven't been back to the site in awhile. I would love to chat or meet up with you all. My email address is smorecamping@frontiernet.net. I know the 17k healthfood store your right it is the best for me too...also I drove all the way out to Chester from Poughkeepsie today and found out the gluten-free bakery will not be open until June 23. I think my mouth was watering the whole ride hoping I would find a really good bread or more and then nothing. Well I did get on their mailing list. Do you have their web address I'd love to check that out in the meantime? Take care!

Virginia

Hey Virginia!

Sorry to hear you went all the way to Chester only to find out the bakery isn't open! Good to know it will open the 23rd though.

Open Original Shared Link is the website...

How old are you and what do you do for a living?

Hey Virginia;

It is funny you mentioned that gluten-free Bakery in Chester, there was just an ad in our Rockland County Paper saying it would open on 6/23 :D

I live in Marlboro, New York. That's on 9W, midway between Mid-Hudson and Newburgh-Beacon bridges. About 45 mins from anything in Poughkeepsie.

Haven't seen any info about a meeting yet, but would be interested.

Wow! what a surprise to hear from everyone and see that we are all over! No problem though. I posted another topic regarding getting together for the Christmas Holiday. So I will extend that offer here as well!

I have a few ideas for what might be fun for the whole group. But first, we need to find a central meeting point. I need to know where people are coming from and how far they are willing to drive. Also, I need to know what day and what weekend is better for you.

Remember only 7 weekends before Christmas Eve!!!!!!!!!

Let's have some fun!

I live in new paltz.

Is there a support group near there?

How about a good doctor or group of doctors near there who are keen to celiac disease and related symptoms?

I have seen too many doctors over the past 11 months and would finally like to feel confident in my doctor(s).

any suggestions?

Johnny

FYI that gluten-free bakery in Chester is closed now. :( Apparently they couldn't keep up with the costs. Just wanted to add that in case any of you read this and were planning a trip out there.

hineini Enthusiast

That is sad, Cougar. But there is apparently a baker in Highland that makes gluten-free goodies on Wednesdays (not sure what they do to protect from cross-contamination though) and there is an alternative baker in Kingston that makes gluten-free stuff...

Wondering if anyone knows whether Lindt chocolate balls are gluten free. The Lindt Canadian website says yes but the Lindt USA website says no. The information is a bit confusing.

I didn’t know there were different types of CT. I’m not sure which I had. It just said CT scan with contrast.

I had the same thing happen to me at around your age, and to this day it's the most painful experience I've ever had. For me it was the right side of my head, above my ear, running from my nerves in my neck. For years before my outbreak I felt a tingling sensation shooting along the exact nerves that ended up exactly where the shingles blisters appeared. I highly recommend the two shot shingles vaccine as soon as your turn 50--I did this because I started to get the same tingling sensations in the same area, and after the vaccines I've never felt that again.  As you likely know, shingles is caused by chicken pox, which was once though of as one of those harmless childhood viruses that everyone should catch in the wild--little did they know that it can stay in your nervous system for your entire life, and cause major issues as you age.
