I can't remember if there's a contraindication, but ginger tea (with honey) may help. Other than that, I go with chicken or veggie broth with a bit of rice in it if I'm not feeling well. (I'm not pregnant though... and I understand what people find tolerable varies, so I don't know if that helps at all.)

awwwwwww kayjay--being pregnant is so special but so rough when you dont feel well--i didnt have morning sickness at all with my first son, but thereafter, everytime---do you think you could try quaker caramel corncakes, they are gluten-free and low in calories, but just a little sweet--they come in a snack size that may be a good pick me up throughout the day---and hon, dont worry so much about weight gain the first few months, especially if you are having problems--this is a very important time for the baby and you both need the nourishment--my mom always told me milk toast, but that's only if you have gluten-free bread ;) feel better--deb

I have not been lucky enough to get pregnant, but a very good friend SWEARS by frozen grapes. You buy any grapes you like & just freeze them.

Hope you're feeling better soon!

Hi there! I also had horrible nausea and vomiting while I was pregnant. A good friend of mine who is a OB/Gyn nurse recommended Peppermint Tea. It helped a bit, and was comforting to me while I felt icky!!

Hope You feel better soon!

Thanks, I did get some ginger ale and peppermint tea but I had to get some med. to take because I was just too sick. I don't like taking med. at all but I have to do what I have to do. I am only in my 8th week I hope this passes soon. Other than that I am so thrilled to be able to carry a baby. I pray everyday that nothing goes wrong and I am seeing a special dr. for my Celiac on top of my ob dr. I feel very well cared for.

thanks everyone I will keep you posted on how things are going.

Congrats!!

I'm in my 7th month and not having the best time of it as far as the pregnancy goes. My first pregnancy while an undiagnosed Celiac was much easier over all. Too much stress in my life :P

As for the morning sickness, try the wrist bands for motion sickness. They really helped me. I ended up having to get medication at one point due to vomitting, but the medication put me straight to sleep :(

One of the other posts said it best, don't worry about the weight especially in the beginning. I agree. Just get through the first trimester. The second and third are much easier sickness wise, but then you get very uncomfortable as the baby gets bigger. Some people quickly gain weight while pregnant and other don't gain well at all, in the end listen to what your body needs and what your doctor tells you. The weight will come off at least some while breast feeding and after that it just takes some work. The goal is just a happy healthy baby and Mommy.

A piece of advice, I was the person who always said go out to eat because it is a social activity and bring whatever food you need to supplement the safe meal at any restaurant. After getting glutened three months in a row while pregnant, I no longer go out to eat unless I have to and then I only go to places that have a gluten-free menu (PF Chang's, Outback, Ted's Montana Grill, etc.) I got sick at a hospital, at a local restaurant after calling ahead and clearing something I could eat, etc. It seems like I am MUCH more sensitive while pregnant. I try no new foods right now.

Also, I have had one high resolution sonogram to check the baby. That sonogram doctor recommended coming back at 28 and 34 weeks to check the baby's growth and weight gain. So far it is a healthy baby, but I have had many small problems that are driving me crazy.

Best of luck to you with the pregnancy and e-mail me if you have questions.

Hey girl, how are the drugs working for you?? They gave me meds during my second pregnancy too (I was sick as a dog the whole nine months) Unfortunately they made me sleep almost all of the time and my first daughter was just barely 2 at the time so there was NO way I could afford to sleep all day. If this is your first one then sleep away!!

My wife took "Papaya" enzymes, that you can get a the health food store. They are very tasty, and help to digest and get rid of that feeling. Actually, they are recomended for celiacs when they have their meal..

Good luck..

I have started taking Zolfan(?) it helped for a day and now I am sick all day long again and having a hard time keeping anything down. I have been eating gluten-free bread and crackers and they make me feel sick because I am not used to eating them at all. I can't tolerate and fruit or veggies right now so I have just been completely miserable. I am supposed to be getting ready for work right now but I am really thinking about calling in. I have not kept anything down today at all and I feel horriable. I hope I am not like this all 9 months! I don't think I will make it. This is my first and I am thankful that I don't have any other children to watch. Well I need to go and rest again. thanks everyone.

Hi there. I feel so bad for you!!! I too am in my eight week. When are you due? I am due August 20th.

I'm not feeling great, but I think thats because of my prenatal vitamins. Going to have to get something different.

I'm sorry I don't have anything new to add to anyone elses post. I know that when I was feeling sick all day it did help to eat those 6 small meals instead of 3 normal ones. Hopefully, this is just normal morning sickness and it will go away in the 2nd trimester.

Good luck and I hope you start feeling better soon!

Are you feeling any better? You are taking Zofran, which is a pretty good anti-nausea med. If it's not working for you, you should let your doctor know, the dose may be able to be adjusted.

Also, get ginger root, dried ginger or ginger tincture. These will be much more effective than gingerale. Doses for nausea are:

- 250 mg of dried giner 4 x day OR

- 1 tsp fresh ginger root boiled in 1-2 cups of water and taken as a tea up to 4 x day - you can sweeten it as needed. OR

- 1.5 - 3.0 mL of ginger tincture by mouth up to 4 x day.

You should be able to get any of these at a health food store.

You could also try Vitamin B6, it has been shown in studies to be about as effective as ginger. The dose is 10-25mg 3 times a day.

I hope some of this helps and you feel better soon. :)

I'm a mother of three and had awful "morning sickness" 24 hours a day! One thing that really helped was to add B complex to my diet. For some reason pregnancy, especially early pregnancy, causes the b vitamins to be depleted from the stomach. They will also help with the fatigue that can come with pregnancy. You may also want to consider eating in small meals or snacks all day so that your stomach never gets empty. Leave something on your nightstand and reach over to get in upon waking -- but don't turn your head or sit up until it is settled into your stomach! If the item is a little sweet, it will not be quite as bad if it does come back up. It may seem odd, but having my husband fix a little chocolate milk for me to have immediately upon rising and last thing before bed helped. I don't know why. Maybe it coated my stomach or just took a little longer to digest.

One BIG thing...if you find that your iron levels are falling, do what my OBGYN suggested and try the following guideline:

Never have dairy or anything containing caffeine within two hours of the time you have meats or other foods from which you want to absorb iron. Just separate "meals with meats" from "meals with dairy". Drink your milk or nibble on cheese at times when you are not planning a meal containing meat or leafy green veggies. Tea is okay in small amounts with your meal as long as you add some lemon.

This made a world of difference for me. Hope the info helps. I wish you all the best with the new little one.

Kayjay,

First...Congrats on the baby. I know twice myself, a wonderful time. My first...was breeze. My second, I was MISERABLE!! I was so sick, I would blow blood vessels in my face and neck throwing up.

What I did was I drank a load of gaterade, and I ate Lays wavy potato chips. Believe it or not, counter part to crackers. I ate them very slow, and thru-out the day. I know it's not the healthiest thing, but you really only need them to get over the sickness. Worked like a charm for me.

I hope it helps a little...pepppermint is a great one also as mentioned above. But go straight for a peppermint...skip the tea. Get a solid dose of it from Candy.

Good luck...keep us posted

Week 13 is magic...one day during that week you will probably wake up and be surprised by the fact that you are not so sick. Don't ask me why, but it happened every time.

Twister2 Contributor

Just a positive thought for all of you. The great thing is that at the end of all this, you get a beautiful little baby! When you look at that precious little face the day you give birth you will feel that its all been worth it!

Hope you are all feeling better!

Kayjay,

Sorry to hear you are so sick.

Could you try those ice pops that are supposed to help for morning sickness? I don't know if they are gluten-free or not. Maybe Pedialyte will help, too, if its gluten-free. I am a new Celiac so I haven't checked yet, but that always helps me when I'm nauseated or have diarrhea.

I will keep you in my prayers if you don't mind. I know you will be better soon.

As far as peppermint goes, sniffing it helps, too, or sniffing lemons. I've never had a baby but people I know said they would carry around lemons in a baggie to smell when nauseated and it really helped.

Lots of luck!

Thanks for your help everyone. I am feeling somewhat better now. I am now having possiable problems with my heart so they are giving me an event monitor to wear for 24 hours this Tuesday. I think everything is fine I just have to check to make sure. I have never had a problem before well just with my stomach  My GI dr. said I couldn't eat out for the whole 9 months and to get my blood checked every month to make sure my vitimin levels are fine. I am doing that but it seems like he is over reacting a little bit. I have been gluten-free for a year now and doing great. I don't eat out much anyways so that one is not a big deal. Really nothing is a big deal as long as I have a health happy baby. :D

I'm glad to hear you're feeling better. I just found out I'm pregnant too - only 5 weeks though. This is my 4th, and every single one I had terrible nausea and diarhea (I seldom purge) starting at about 8 weeks - so, it's only a matter of time for me.

I just wanted to add a 'sniff' to the list:

Lavendar. I used to smell lavendar whenever I was nauseous and it always worked for me. The potato chips worked well too - the saltier the better.

I got rid of any soaps and cleaners that were too pungent, as often it was the strong smell of something that would trigger it. And I switched to a very mild toothpaste too, as that always caused a problem - I found Tom's of Maine to be good, and I'm just now looking into a new Tea-Tree Oil one that I know is very mild. Looks gluten-free, but I'm checking into it. And never let your mouth get dry - this always made me feel sick - I always carry water around with me, and a small snack, b/c if I let myself get the slightest bit thirsty or hungry, I'd feel so sick that I no longer wanted to eat but just felt so sick.

Hmmmm....oh yeah, I guess typically, many women in early pregnancy have an aversion to meats and eggs. They think it is the body's natural way of avoiding food-bourne illness in early pregnancy. I also disliked onions and garlic throughout - again b/c of the strong odor, but also b/c I felt sick if I EVER had a taste left over in my mouth.

Oh yes, and speaking of that - Many women have a metallic taste in their mouths during pregnancy, and this can cause nausea too. I hated water for that reason, b/c I could still taste the 'metal' while drinking it. I used to put a bit a lemon in it to add some flavor to combat my own (lol).

That's about it! Good luck to you (yous :P )!

Donna congrats to you! I hope you don't get sick this time around they say every pg can be different. Well, I am in my 15th week now and I still get sick about 2-3 times a day but that is better than before and I am keeping food down now so that is a plus. I can't figure out what triggers it for me other than just being hungry but sometimes I can eat something and be fine and other days I can't. Hopefully, I will get over the nausea part and not have it the entire time. I hope that you don't get sick though, I have 8 friends all having babies around the same time and none of them got sick. go figure

Thank you KayJay!

All 8 aren't sick? lol - that is LUCK! I'm glad you're feeling better - hope you can get completely over it soon though. I'm sure it's tough trying to plan anything with that lingering over your head (or should I say, stomach?).

Enjoy your pregnancy!

Hi Kayjay...I hope you are feeling better. I am also pregnant with my first baby and I was deathly ill for th first 9 weeks then about 3 days ago I woke up hungry and was able to eat, keep the food down, and actually move into the rest of my day feeling pretty good...it was amazing!!!

Before I woke up feeling better the only things I could eat and feel ok were frozen grapes(I can't believe some else was eating those...everyone thought I was crazy...but they really helped!!) and applesauce...lots of applesauce...

Hopefully you are feeling great and don't need to worry about this anymore, but if not I hope maybe one of these will help you too!

Hang in there!

I too am currently 6w2d pregnant with celiac disease. I have been nauseated since 4 weeks. I can barely keep anything down now, it is miserable, but have had 2 miscarriages I am happy to be sick, it is just tough to deal with. Thanks for the advise. I did find lemon juice/lemon candy seemed to help at least for the moments while I was using them. Most stuff doesn't stay down now. My insurance doesn't cover Zofran which is something like $20-30 per pill!!!! I think I will deal with the puking.

Thanks for the advise. Any other suggestions appreciated.

Thanks I am all better now! I started feeling better when I hit the 5 month mark and it seemed like forever. Carrie I hope you feel better I can't really recommend anything that helps nothing helped me much at all. But rest assured that you will feel better and actually get energy back :)

I felt nauseous 24 hours a day for the first trimester during my first two pregnancies. Now I"m pregnant with my third. I started getting nauseous again yet this time took the advice of a friend and had acupuncture done. It took two treatments, but since the second one I haven't felt one BIT of nausea. I don't know whether it is a coincidence or what, but I think it is worth a try. The first session I was nauseous when I laid on the table and she put a needle in each of my wrists (same point where you where those motion sickness bands). When she put the second needle in, I felt the nausea go completely away while I was lying there. Then when the session was over, I felt nauseous again when I stood up. The next morning though...no nausea! I felt good for a few days, then started feeling sick again. I went back for my second appointment and the same thing happened, but that next day I woke up and haven't felt sick since (and I'm now 11 weeks...that was around week 7 or 8).

Anyway, I think it is definitely worth a try. The other thing that helped a tiny bit was real ginger ale (from a health food store). I like Santa Cruz Organic brand.

Good luck,

Elaine

Hey there, have you been tested for allergies? You may not only have celiac disease but be allergic. I have celiac disease and am allergic to Barley, wheat and rye.

I have osteopenia and have cracked three vertebrae.  Niacin is connected to osteoporosis! Do talk to your nutritionist and doctor about supplementing with B vitamins.  Blood tests don't reveal the amount of vitamins stored inside cells.  The blood is a transportation system and can reflect vitamins absorbed from food eaten in the previous twenty-four to forty-eight hours.  Those "normal limits" are based on minimum amounts required to prevent disease, not levels for optimal health.   Keep us posted on your progress.   B Vitamins: Functions and Uses in Medicine https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC9662251/ Association of dietary niacin intake with osteoporosis in the postmenopausal women in the US: NHANES 2007–2018 https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC11835798/ Clinical trial: B vitamins improve health in patients with coeliac disease living on a gluten-free diet https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/19154566/   Nutritional Imbalances in Adult Celiac Patients Following a Gluten-Free Diet https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC8398893/ Nutritional Consequences of Celiac Disease and Gluten-Free Diet https://www.mdpi.com/2036-7422/15/4/61 Simplifying the B Complex: How Vitamins B6 and B9 Modulate One Carbon Metabolism in Cancer and Beyond https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC9609401/

Thank you so much for the clarification! Yes to these questions: Have you consulted dietician?  Have you been checked for nutritional deficiencies?  Osteoporosis? Thyroid? Anemia?  Do you take any supplements, or vitamins? I’m within healthy range for nutritional tests, thyroid and am not anemic. I do have osteopenia. I don’t take any medications, and the dietician was actually a nutritionist (not sure if that is the same thing) recommended by my physician at the time to better understand gluten free eating.    I almost wish the gluten exposure had triggered something, so at least I’d know what’s going on. So confusing!    Many thanks!
    • knitty kitty
@JudyLou,  I have dermatitis herpetiformis, too!  And...big drum roll... Niacin improves dermatitis herpetiformis!   Niacin is very important to skin health and intestinal health.   You're correct.  dermatitis herpetiformis usually occurs on extensor muscles, but dermatitis herpetiformis is also pressure sensitive, so blisters can form where clothing puts pressure on the skin. Elastic waist bands, bulky seams on clothing, watch bands, hats.  Rolled up sleeves or my purse hanging on my arm would make me break out on the insides of my elbows.  I have had a blister on my finger where my pen rested as I write.  Foods high in Iodine can cause an outbreak and exacerbate dermatitis herpetiformis. You've been on the gluten free diet for a long time.  Our gluten free diet can be low in vitamins and minerals, especially if processed gluten free foods are consumed.  Those aren't fortified with vitamins like gluten containing products are.  Have you consulted dietician?  Have you been checked for nutritional deficiencies?  Osteoporosis? Thyroid? Anemia?  Do you take any supplements, medicine, or vitamins? Niacin deficiency is connected to anemia.  Anemia can cause false negatives on tTg IgA tests.  A person can be on that borderline where symptoms wax and wane for years, surviving, but not thriving.  We have a higher metabolic need for more nutrients when we're sick or emotionally stressed which can deplete the small amount of vitamins we can store in our bodies and symptoms reappear.   Exposure to gluten (and casein in those sensitive to it) can cause an increased immune response and inflammation for months afterwards. The immune cells that make tTg IgA antibodies which are triggered today are going to live for about two years. During that time, inflammation is heightened.  Those immune cells only replicate when triggered.  If those immune cells don't get triggered again for about two years, they die without leaving any descendents programmed to trigger on gluten and casein.  The immune system forgets gluten and casein need to be attacked.  The Celiac genes turn off.  This is remission.    Some people in remission report being able to consume gluten again without consequence.   However, another triggering event can turn the Celiac genes on again.   Celiac genes are turned on by a triggering event (physical or emotional stress).  There's some evidence that thiamine insufficiency contributes to the turning on of autoimmune genes.  There is an increased biological need for thiamine when we are physically or emotionally stressed.  Thiamine cannot be stored for more than twenty-one days and may be depleted in as little as three during physical and emotional stresses. Mitochondria without sufficient thiamine become damaged and don't function properly.  This gets relayed to the genes and autoimmune disease genes turn on.  Thiamine and other B vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients are needed to replace the dysfunctional mitochondria and repair the damage to the body.   I recommend getting checked for vitamin and mineral deficiencies.  More than just Vitamin D and B12.  A gluten challenge would definitely be a stressor capable of precipitating further vitamin deficiencies and health consequences.   Best wishes!
