Glutened "explosion"

How to explain it....

The reoccurring episodes that landed me in the ER on many occasions were when I would wake up due to nausea and then spend the next 6 or so hours vomiting violently (every 20 minutes or so) until all there was to vomit was bile and on these occasions I would usually have bouts of D until my body was totally emptied of everything. These episodes would happen a couple of times a year and when they'd happen I would have 2 or 3 of them in close proximity (in a month span). I spent 15 years undiagnosed (did many many a test) and only of recent they found sludgy bile and tiny gallstones and celiac disease. My doctor believes the vomiting episodes were not linked to celiac but I think maybe they were.

I've been gluten-free since my diagnosis last April and haven't had any of the vomit episodes until yesterday. And this time all there was to vomit was air (truly bizarre) but D was there and I was a C sufferer when on gluten. For the past 2 weeks I have been taking fish oil in capsules. None of the ingredients sounded like it could contain gluten but I called the company and they cannot guarantee that the gelatin capsule is free from contamination. And also in the last few days I have been feeling tipsy and jittery (which are two things that I have no longer had since going gluten-free).

Does anyone believe that it is possible that when these episodes happen it is because my body is slowly being "poisoned" by gluten then all of a sudden expels everything in a sort of purification? If the capsules have a tiny bit of gluten in them maybe it took 2 weeks of constant ingestion and then my body went in an expunging mode?

No doctor has ever heard of my episodes and I was wondering if anyone has had something similar.

Well, though I never had any vomiting problems (thank goodness), I do relate to the tipsiness/jitters. I think many of us do, as I've read numerous threads discussing dizziness, dropping things, bumping into things, and so forth. What helped me in that regard was magnesium, along with B12 (I think the magnesium was the major thing).

How this might relate to the vomiting, I don't know. It may, but I do not recall reading anything from other members on that. It wouldn't be the first time someone has a unique symptom.

As for the fish oils, have you tried freshly ground flax seeds?

Definitely stop taking them and see if things get better! When a company can't be sure, then I can't trust them.

Yes the vomiting could be celiac related. My DD had ulcers and vomitting as a main symptom, she never had much D. I would find her lying on the bathroom floor shaking, pale and afraid to leave the room on a monthly basis. The vomiting was not a constant thing for her.

I would stop taking those fish oil capsules and see if things improve.

I had vomiting episodes almost every day for 6 months prior to diagnoses just under 2 years ago and it was definitely related to celiac.

As soon as they figured that out and I went totally gluten-free, the vomiting, dry heaves, stopped and i've never had another problem even when accidently glutened. I'm extremely paranoid about any vitamins and pills. Yesterday I searched our Kmart for things that I felt comfortable taking and my cart remained empty. My hope is that eventually the drug companies and vitamin makers have to follow label laws that food producers do.

I agree that you need to stop taking those pills. If you want to take fish oil (cod liver oil is advised in the winter, because it contains vitamin D), take Carlson's oil. It is the best out there, and doesn't taste fishy.

I agree that you need to stop taking those pills. If you want to take fish oil (cod liver oil is advised in the winter, because it contains vitamin D), take Carlson's oil. It is the best out there, and doesn't taste fishy.

Carlson's or Dr Ron's, just Google either of those names, are the purest cod liver oil, and I believe they guarantee gluten free. Flax seeds wouldn't be a bad addition, but you won't get as much out of them because it's much more difficult for your digestive system to draw out the omega-3's from flax seeds and flax oil. They do have lots of fiber, which is good. Be careful with too much fiber though, some people's systems aren't used to it and you get an 'explosive' reaction. Flax oil also goes rancid relatively quickly, both oils should be kept in the fridge.

Hi, In a way I'm very happy to hear that someone has the vomiting and nausea issues, I was starting to think I was alone. The same thing happens to me, I vomit for about a week to the point that not even water will stay down. I also get shaky and develop a fever.

I'm a nursing student and the best way I've explained this is really understanding what an autoimmune disease is and understanding what your body is doing to itself. Basically, when you get gluten you've introduced a substance that causes your whole body to start an inflammatory response. When your highly sensitive, as we may be, it causes the whole system, our body, to attack us in because it got confused and starting attacking us instead of the gluten. This all sounds very complicated but it's insightful because a lot of doctors blow off vomiting as a sign of the body doing what it suppose to do fight.

After a while the stronger my immune system got the worse episodes of vomiting got. This may be occurring with you because well you were undiagnosed your body was busy fighting the bowl and your immune system was compromised. Now that you start to heal you will fight how common colds and virus much easier, but your body will also fight the gluten stronger too.

I still slip up, In fact, I missed a whole week of school this past month because I took some vitamins I thought were safe. If you've found anything that curves the nausea or helps with the vomiting I would love to hear.

Also, you might want to find some good medical sites that have medical references and look up the patho physiology of an autoimmune disease it might be insightful. I would also like to add that you should have your gallbladder and pancreas checked as vomiting and fever are both signs that there may be a problem. It is better to be safe then sorry, as both those organs can lead to major problems if not treated in time.

      Hello, no I had to have them re done and then used a liner over the top.  Many dentists are not aware of the celiac effects.  Best of luck.   There is other material, yet, very expensive.
