I'm Frustrated And Hungry

Hey everyone,

I gave-in this week and ate gluten...no big surprise that I now have "C" and fatigue. <_<

I feel totally overwhelmed. My cookbooks are still missing (from our move back in October). I've been printing recipes from on-line sites. My printer is giving me a fit...although, it's not officially "broken." I've been eating a lot of natural foods (fruits and veggies).

My muscles ache (due to my own gluten-eating stupidity). I'm just so stressed. My house is filthy (we've lived here six months and are nowhere near done unpacking)

I've started using TV shows like "Clean Sweep," "Mission Organization," "Clean House," and "Decorating Cents" as therapy. It is oddly comforting to know that I am not alone. Prior to the move, I was a very good house keeper. As strange as it sounds, I take notes from these shows and use them in my own home for setting up new organization in an unfamiliar environment.

We purchased a repo. So a lot of little things need to be done to the house: paint the inside of the whole house, patch walls, a few new cabnits, new countertops, etc. Ugghhh...

May I scream? AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! Thank you. This is the end of my rant. Confessing I ate gluten and venting over stress.

On that note, I am going to go clean. -Julie

Sorry..I will say a prayer for you.

As far as something easy to make that's filling..if you can do eggs. I was just thinking of something quick and easy since you aren't feeling well and your house isn't how you want it..and I am eating it right now.

I am eating something that I never thought would be that filling. I always thought that the only things that could fill me up were bad carbs..heavy carbs like bread, cereals, etc..

Anyway..I just took some coconut oil in a pan. Heated it up. Added some fresh spinache and asparagus. Some sea salt. A couple off eggs beat up went in next. Then I added some fresh avacado after I plated it up..Avacado is great source of a good fat for me because the only fat I really consume comes from avacado, coocnut oil and almond butter right now.

I so understand the whole moving/unpacking thing. We moved here a year and a half ago and lived in an apartment, then bought a house and moved in this past July. I just finished unpacking and organizing the home office over Xmas break. It's not 100% done but at least no more boxes sitting around. It took me 6 months! I still have no curtains on any of the windows and we have 4 palates of stuff that's been sitting in a warehouse since we moved a year and a half ago. Making lists somehow helps me to not get ahead of myself and expect everything to be done at once. I even list little things like a new switchplate for the office lightswitch. Then I can do something small and check it off my list and feel like I've accomplished something. When I put it on the list it's like I take it out of my brain and set it free into the notebook on my computer.

Are you a counselor or therapist? B) Your idea is the same advice I have given some of my clients in the past. Interesting. I have my "big list" that I check off, but perhaps I need to break it down into even smaller increments to feel successful.

Another tip: If worries and "to-do" thoughts are making it difficult to sleep, keep a pen and paper on your nightstand and write down any random thoughts. Your worries will be there when you wake up, and you won't forget to go to the doctor's appointment tomorrow that you suddenly remembered at 11:00 pm the night before. ;) It allows your mind to relax and do other things like...sleep. B)

On another note, thank you for the support! It seems every time I empty a box, another full box appears. I'm glad to know I'm not alone... both your family and ours will eventually get our homes organized and unpacked. I'm praying for patience until that day!

Hi Gluten15,

Thank you for the prayers! Your meal sounds very good. I'm hoping that the men who helped us move didn't forget to grab the box with my cookbooks. We had an entire (vacant) house and two large storage units filled with furniture and boxes while we looked for a home. Blessings to you!

Thanks so much for the support! I need it right now. -Julie

I'm sorry you were having such a bad day!! I've been sorely tempted to eat a piece of pizza or a piece of chocolate (i'm currently only eating 20 foods, trying to introduce other foods one at a time, but i keep reacting ...). I've lived in this house for 4 years and I still have a few boxes - most, but not all, in the attic of course lol. My kids are constantly playing video games or on the computer, when they arent back-talking me, and the house is such a mess my husband broke his toe tripping on a toy, and even if I vacuum twice a week (but usually its once at most) the floors are covered w dog hair, bits of paper, and food crumbs.

I tried flylady - look it up on the web - and now the only thing I accomplish thanks to flylady is deleting 30 emails every day lol! I cant make a new habit or routine stick no matter what!!!

So, I can relate. I think, sooner or later, you need to give in and start rebuilding your cookbook collection - maybe with updated or new books by some of your favorite authors? Budget it in, maybe a book every 3 months or whatever you can handle, or look on ebay and see if there are any used ones . . .

hang in there!!

Collette,

Thanks deary! :)

Cara,

You are really living my life right now...if you need to feel better, come step over all my papers!

Hell, I slept in a bed full of Pop-tart crumbs the other night! <_< My one year old was crying (he sleeps with the hubby and I). Anyway, when I went to bed, my son came with me...and had to have Pop-tarts. (I would normally say no to him, but I was glutened and too dang tired to put up a fight).

So sorry your hubby broke his toe, but I'm giggling because I really understand. My hubby caught his toe one night (in the dark) on a wheel to my son's Radio Flyer metal wagon. I had no clue it was in the middle of the kitchen floor! :o

As far as buying new cookbooks is concerned, I definitely want to as soon as money permits. Right now, we're investing any "fun" money in items to make the house livable. All my gluten-free cooking "notes" and tips that I've gathered over the years are also missing with those cookbooks. For now, I'm just clinging to my cooking websites. ^_^

Hugs to everyone. -Julie

Welcome to the celiac.com communiuty, @Matthias! Yes, we have been aware that this can be an issue with mushrooms but as long as they are rinsed thoroughly it should not be a problem since the mushrooms don't actually incorporate the gluten into their cellular structure. For the same reason, one needs to be careful when buying aged cheeses and products containing yeast because of the fact that they are sometimes cultured on gluten-containing substrate.

The one kind of food I had been buying and eating without any worry for hidden gluten were unprocessed veggies. Well, yesterday I discovered yet another pitfall: cultivated mushrooms. I tried some new ones, Shimeji to be precise (used in many asian soup and rice dishes). Later, at home, I was taking a closer look at the product: the mushrooms were growing from a visible layer of shredded cereals that had not been removed. After a quick web research I learned that these mushrooms are commonly cultivated on a cereal-based medium like wheat bran. I hope that info his helpful to someone.

I might suggest you consider buckwheat groats. https://www.amazon.com/Anthonys-Organic-Hulled-Buckwheat-Groats/dp/B0D15QDVW7/ref=sr_1_4_pp?crid=GOFG11A8ZUMU&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.bk-hCrXgLpHqKS8QJnfKJLKbKzm2BS9tIFv3P9HjJ5swL1-02C3V819UZ845_kAwnxTUM8Qa69hKl0DfHAucO827k_rh7ZclIOPtAA9KjvEEYtaeUV06FJQyCoi5dwcfXRt8dx3cJ6ctEn2VIPaaFd0nOye2TkASgSRtdtKgvXEEXknFVYURBjXen1Nc7EtAlJyJbU8EhB89ElCGFPRavEQkTFHv9V2Zh1EMAPRno7UajBpLCQ-1JfC5jKUyzfgsf7jN5L6yfZSgjhnwEbg6KKwWrKeghga8W_CAhEEw9N0.eDBrhYWsjgEFud6ZE03iun0-AEaGfNS1q4ILLjZz7Fs&dib_tag=se&keywords=buckwheat%2Bgroats&qid=1769980587&s=grocery&sprefix=buchwheat%2Bgroats%2Cgrocery%2C249&sr=1-4&th=1 Takes about 10 minutes to cook. Incidentally, I don't like quinoa either. Reminds me and smells to me like wet grass seed. When its not washed before cooking it makes me ill because of saponins in the seed coat. Yes, it can be difficult to get much dietary calcium without dairy. But in many cases, it's not the amount of calcium in the diet that is the problem but the poor uptake of it. And too much calcium supplementation can interfere with the absorption of vitamins and minerals in general because it raises gut pH.

What you’re describing really does not read like typical IBS-D. The dramatic, rapid normalization of stool frequency and form after removing wheat, along with improved tolerance of legumes and plant foods, is a classic pattern seen in gluten-driven disease rather than functional IBS. IBS usually worsens with fiber and beans, not improves. The fact that you carry HLA-DQ2.2 means celiac disease is absolutely possible, even if it’s less common than DQ2.5, and many people with DQ2.2 present later and are under-diagnosed. Your hesitation to reintroduce gluten is completely understandable — quality of life matters — and many people in your position choose to remain strictly gluten-free and treat it as medically necessary even without formal biopsy confirmation. If and when you’re ready, a physician can help you weigh options like limited gluten challenge, serology history, or documentation as “probable celiac.” What’s clear is that this wasn’t just random IBS — you identified the trigger, and your body has been very consistent in its response.
