Memorial Day weekend I'll be in the East Islip area of Long Island. I'm staying at the LaQuinta in Bohemia and searched a bit but I'm just not familiar enough with the towns to know how close the restaurants I found are to the area I'll be staying at. Any help would be greatly appreciated. This is the first time I'm traveling since I was diagnosed....I'm nervous. ;)

Thanks in advance :)

You're in luck! Mama's is one of the best Italian restaurants with a gluten free menu. It's in Oakdale, which is right next to Bohemia.

Here's a link to the address, and also where you can search for more restaurants.

Thank you so much! I had no idea that website even existed. So I take it the food there is awesome? I'll have to give it a try on the Saturday night I'm down there. :D

Mama's is fantastic. I live about half an hour away when I'm not at school and it's worth the trip every time. Get the fried calamari! (My mom tried to send it back to the kitchen because she was convinced it wasn't gluten-free. That's how good it was!)

Oh my god...calamari!?!! I haven't had that in so long!!! I can't WAIT to go to LI!!!

Oats naturally contain a protein called avenin, which is similar to the gluten proteins found in wheat, barley, and rye. While avenin is generally considered safe for most people with celiac disease, some individuals, around 5-10% of celiacs, may also have sensitivity to avenin, leading to symptoms similar to gluten exposure. You may fall into this category, and eliminating them is the best way to figure this out. Some people substitute gluten-free quinoa flakes for oats if they want a hot cereal substitute. If you are interested in summaries of scientific publications on the topic of oats and celiac disease, we have an entire category dedicated to it which is here: https://www.celiac.com/celiac-disease/oats-and-celiac-disease-are-they-gluten-free/
