Celiac can effect just about any organ and yes for some the most prominent feature can be heartburn. It was one of the most prominent signs in my DD. Upon endo the GI stated that she was not what he would call a 'fullblown' celiac yet but that if she wanted to avoid ending up like me she still needed to be gluten free. Total villi destruction is the end stage of the GI impact of celiac, if you can prevent yourself from getting to that stage it is a good thing.

My symptoms were severe stomach pains, hernia and diarrhea. The pain would come up my gullet into my throat - I suspect the gas and bloating was displacing everything and causing severe 'heartburn'. Every time I ate I didn't know what to do with myself as the pain would last for hours - I actually got afraid to eat!

Within several hours after starting gluten-free the pain went away. Within a week the hernia had abated as had the gas and bloating and the rest of the discomfort and diarrhea. Other health issues are gradually resolving.

I not only stopped gluten but also dairy, then most carbs and sugar as I was still getting problems with some foods, mainly carbs.

I now follow the Specific Carbohydrate Diet with a bit extra protein for my Metabolic type and my body is starting to heal.

Coeliac/Celiac is the body's inability to process gluten. It won't be in your oesophagus, but it will trigger bodily responses and things like Candida/fungal infestation that will give you a problem within your gut and oesophagus.

Hi ...does anyone know if you can have coeliac in the oesophagus and if so, if it presents like heartburn?

Yes, it CAN present itself with esophagus problems. My heartburn started becoming worse throughout the day and there were many nights I slept upright in a chair because it hurt to lie down in bed. I also had pain in the upper, right abdomen and difficulty in that area about a minute after swallowing food.

After my recent endoscopy/colonoscopy, along with a diagnosis of "chronic inflammation", they also diagnosed me with "esophagitis". The doctor placed me on Prilosec capsules (the generic, actually) for eight weeks and said that I must be gluten-free. Happy to say that I haven't had any problems with the above symptoms since beginning the capsules and diet five weeks ago. The doctor felt that I will remain symptom free - if I remain gluten-free.

Frankly, this all makes me wonder how many people have been diagnosed with GERD (reflux) and are consigned to a lifetime of taking medication when they are probably, and more accurately, an undiagnosed celiac?

Thanks Scott. They are gluten-free but cross contaminated.

Hi there @MCAyr I have a small umbilical hernia which came about during my second pregnancy.   I can just about see it, and feel it, when I stand or sit, but it is far less noticeable when I lie down.  I always know when I am putting on weight because I can get pain and burning near the site, funnily enough not on the hernia itself but either side!  I would imagine bloating could cause the same effect as weight gain. In my case I don't think it is my bowel protruding but a bit of fat  - sorry,  I realise this isn't painting a very pretty picture.  But in truth it is scarcely noticeable.  It has never really got bigger in size. I was rather hoping that it could be operated on but here in the UK they don't seem to operate on every hernia anymore.  My GP isn't remotely worried about it. In a way, I should be thankful - it is like an early warning system that I need to go on a diet! Cristiana

The hernia description would likely be unrelated to celiac disease, but you'd need to get it checked out by your doctor to be sure it's a hernia.
