I Think My Mom Has Celiac

So I will begin by saying that I think (know) my mother has celiac. I was diagnosed about 2 months ago and have been researching intensely. I have learned so much and decided since I have been diagnosed that my mother should also be tested, especially considering her classic symptoms which she has had for years: severe anemia(which doesn't get better with supplements) IBS, bloating, gas, D, constipation, chronic fatigue, migranes, brain fog, etc.

So I advised her to ask her doctor to be tested, My mother knows nothing about celiac, but since I do now I was conviced that she would have celiac considering I do. So she went in and asked her doc, and her doc said "why would you want to be tested for that?" (typical doctor's reaction) She explained how I have celiac, and she had many symptoms. So the doc agreed to do the blood work. We waited patiently and never heard anything from them. So my mom called and the nurse said they were negative for celiac, thats all she could tell her.

I was shocked, and in disbelieve as I don't even know what tests the doc did, and the doc was convinced that she didn't have celiac in the first place so she probably didn't even do all the tests.

So I am wondering what to do now, I want my mom to have the biopsy done to rule out celiac. I have heard so much about blood tests being inaccurate and I just don't think that the doctor should have ruled out celiac so quickly. My mom is the type of person that without a diagnosis she would never go gluten free, so I really need her to be more upfront with her doctor and tell her that she wants the biopsy done, but I don't know if she will. I don't know how to get this resolved, I don't want my mom suffering anymore, she has suffered her whole life.

Any advice apppreciated

Thanks

Worried Daughter

First of all I would like to tell you that she is very lucky to have such a caring daughter...

The only thing that might help is either change doctor or convince her to do the biopsy just to check her intestine since it is something all adults should do once in their life (my doctor told me that)...She may not have celiac but she may have chrons or candida or anything else. The biopsy will show her. Doesn't she want to feel better? Maybe if you keep telling her how great you feel now????

I think that maybe your Mom should ask them to mail the results. That way you have it in writing. i heard that after age 50 most people should have a colonoccopy, to rule out Crohn's Colitus etc... pretty standard procedure then for the Endoscopy I think that if the Biopsy is negative that might encourage your Mom to think nothing is wrong. So can you be the cook for a while? and make some really good pies and foods that she will like and just say lets try the gluten free thing ? If they want to repeat the blood test it might stay negative once you have gone Gluten free. I have been tested 3 times untill it was positive.

Yes, definitely have her ask for a copy of the lab report. I don't know the law but I think that you have a right to it. If they don't do it, insist. I've had to ask more than once because I think they forget but in the end I've gotten them. You can call the lab and ask questions to clarify some things but they can't give a diagnosis or interpret results. I called and asked about the range limits just to clarify and be sure that I understood.

Hi everyone  This has been a crazy year so far... How many people actually get entire sensory overload from gluten or something similar ?  My jaw is going nuts ..and that nerve is affecting my upper back and so on ...  Bones even hurt.  Brain fog. Etc  I had eggs seemed fine.   Then my aid cooked a chicken stir fry in the microwave because my food order shorted a couple key items .   I was so hungry but I noticed light breading and some ingredients with SOY !!! Why are we suffering with soy ? This triggered a sensitivity to bananas and gluten-free yogurt it seems like it's a cycle that it goes on.  The tiniest amount of something gets me I'm guessing the tiny bit of breading that I took one tiny nibble of ...yikes ..im cringing from it .. Feels like my stomach is going to explode yet still very hungry 😔  How long does this last?! Thank you so much

I have had orthodontic work done. The 3M invisalign material was no problem. BUT my retainers are another matter. They seemed okay for a few months. Now, however, they cause a burning sensation on my tongue, gums and insides of my lips. The burning sensation is now spreading to my throat. I notice it when I breathe. This is annoying and interferes with my enjoyment of eating. I am visiting with my provider tomorrow. We'll see where this goes from here.

Exactly which blood tests were done? There are a few different ones and some docs don't do them all. Also, your results and reference ranges for each?
