San Diego Restaurants

Hello,

I am completely new to this board, and I am new to the whole Celiac's thing. I am traveling to San Diego the beginning of July (2008) and I am hoping to find some fun local flavor of San Diego that is gluten free (I'm hoping to avoid the chain restaurants like Chili's and fast food). Does anyone have any recommendations on where to eat out and have a great vacation experience, but also maintain my new gluten-free lifestyle? We will be in San Diego quite a bit on our trip, but our hotel is located in the Escondido area. Any suggestions in either of these two areas or in between would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

click here for a Open Original Shared Link, they have some restaurant listings. In my experience there aren't that many non-chains with gluten-free menus in San Diego, but most of the we-make-the-food-here restaurants are able to accommodate gluten-free diners if you self-identify and are willing to educate them a bit.

Also, search on this site for "san diego" there were a few older threads with some ideas.

Have a great trip!

I read a review, and went to, "The better half". Restaurant is excellent, small, nice atmosphere, but pricey! Chef comes out and talks to you about gluten free, seems very knowledgeable.

I like Ranchos in North Park. Cilantros Live also has quite a few options (expensive vegan food - but good). Ki's in Cardiff is also one of my favorites (the veggie burger is made with millet and is gluten-free - I usually get the veggie burger tacos).

Oats naturally contain a protein called avenin, which is similar to the gluten proteins found in wheat, barley, and rye. While avenin is generally considered safe for most people with celiac disease, some individuals, around 5-10% of celiacs, may also have sensitivity to avenin, leading to symptoms similar to gluten exposure. You may fall into this category, and eliminating them is the best way to figure this out. Some people substitute gluten-free quinoa flakes for oats if they want a hot cereal substitute. If you are interested in summaries of scientific publications on the topic of oats and celiac disease, we have an entire category dedicated to it which is here: https://www.celiac.com/celiac-disease/oats-and-celiac-disease-are-they-gluten-free/
