my dd's scope is tomorrow

they are also doing a colonoscopy along with the endoscopy and biopsy.

what are they looking for with the scope and biopsy? what about the colonoscopy?

will she be sore after the colonoscopy? i havent told her she is having this, as i dont want her thinking about it and worrying.

also, i havent purchased a single gluten free bread, pasta, cracker, etc.

i should have been stocking up all along.

she was thrilled when we seen "gluten free" right on the vienna package the other day.

With both the endoscopy and colonoscopy, they are looking for whatever condition(s) may be causing her symptoms. Examples in the endoscopy can include hiatal hernia, reflux, ulcers, and all the way down to the villi damage that is indicative of celiac. My son, in addition to his severely damaged villi, was found to have several large polyps in his stomach. The Dr. said that they were probably caused by the constant irritation from the gluten, but took biopsies from them just in case (they were benign). The colonoscopy is not a test for celiac, but if you DD has been having lots of problems, they may want to do it since they have her out anyway, and to see if there is anything else to be concerned about (hemorrhoids, kinks in the intestines, etc.).

My son did not have a colonoscopy, but I did. I did not experience any pain, and I have no memory of the procedure. Are they having you do any prep for the colonoscopy? Any enemas or laxatives or anything? I know in adults that has to be done the day before, but I don't know if the prep is the same for kids.

As far as not having any bread and pasta in the house, you are going to be fine. You will find your favorites in time, and don't have to jump into replacing things right away. Do you have Trader Joe's near you? That's a great source for gluten-free food. What about an asian market? You can get all kinds of rice pasta there. If you don't have bread, you can use corn tortillas or lettuce leaves to make wraps.

Don't panic. Do one thing at a time. Get through the exams first, and then we can deal with the food part of things. If it helps you, my son came through his endoscopy with flying colors, and doesn't even remember it.

i havent told her she is having this, as i dont want her thinking about it and worrying.

If she is 9 years old, and you are not telling her that this is coming up, you might be sowing the seeds of a very serious trust issue--if you are implying that tomorrow is going to be a normal day, and then she goes through hell, how will she ever be able to trust you again?

Please do tell her tonight, and tell her that it is not anything to worry about. Look up info online together with her so that she is prepared! For her to go to the hospital unprepared is going to be absolutely terrifying to her; it's actually less frightening to know in advance what will be happening.

she knows she is having the endoscopy and the biopsy. i just have left out the colonoscopy part. afraid her anxiety will get the best of her a the thought of something going up "there".

but you are right, i do NOT ever want a trust issue with her.

no, we live in hickville, no trader joes, no whole foods, no asian market.

there is an amish store about 45 minutes away.

we will talk tonight.

thanks so much for your help and reassurance.

I hope all went well!

Another annoying thing about trying to figure this Celiac life out is reading all of the labels and considering every choice. I shop at Aldi every week and have been for years. I was just officially diagnosed Celiac a couple weeks ago this October after my endoscopy. I've been encouraged by my local Aldi in that they have a lot of gluten free products and clearly labeled foods. I usually buy Milagro corn tortillas because they are cheap and are certified. However, I bought a package of Aldi's Pueblo Lindo Yellow Corn Tortillas without looking too closely (I was assuming they were fine... assuming never gets us anywhere good lol) it doesn't list any wheat products and doesn't say it was processed in a facility with wheat. It has a label that it's lactose free (hello, what?? When has dairy ever been in a tortilla?) Just, ugh. If they can add that label then why can't they just say something is gluten free or not? I did eat some of the tortillas and didn't notice any symptoms but I'm just not sure if it's safe. So I'll probably have to let my family eat them and stick with Milagro. There is way too much uncertainty with this but I guess you just have to stick with the clearly labeled products? I am still learning!

Thank you all for sharing your experiences! And I am very thankful for that Thanksgiving article, Scott! I will look into it more as I plan my little dinner to bring with on the Holiday I'm also glad a lot of research has been done for Celiac. There's still a lot to learn and discover. And everyone has different symptoms. For me, I get a bad headache right away after eating gluten. Reoccurring migraines and visual disturbances were actually what got my PCP to order a Celiac Panel. I'm glad he did! I feel like when the inflammation hits my body it targets my head, gut, and lower back. I'm still figuring things out but that's what I've noticed after eating gluten! I have been eating gluten-free for almost two months now and haven't had such severe symptoms. I ate a couple accidents along the way but I'm doing a lot better

@Mari, did you read that second article that Scott linked? It is the most recently date one. "Researchers comparing rates of headaches, including migraines, among celiac patients and a healthy control group showed that celiac subjects experienced higher rates of headaches than control subjects, with the greatest rates of migraines found in celiac women.  Additionally, celiacs had higher rates of migraine than control subjects, especially in women. In fact, four out of five women with celiac disease suffered from migraines, and without aura nearly three-quarters of the time."

As far as I know and I have made severalonline searches, celiac disease disease has not been recognized as a cause of migraines or any eye problems. What I wrote must have been confusing.

Interesting, when I suffered for a few months with ectopics I noticed that carbohydrates would cause indigestion and bloating in my stomach, then that would lead to my heart skipping beats, and I could feel it in my throat, it was very unsettling.  My last serious bout of this was after eating a Muller Rice Pudding for breakfast.   I happened to be wearing a 48 hour halter at the time and cardiology picked it up, but they weren't worried about what they saw. There was some British doctor who'd made some videos on the Vagus nerve that I remember watching at the time which made sense of what I was experiencing, there did seem to be some sort of connection.
