Mono & Diglycerides

I saw in Living Without that mono& diglycerides is on the questionable list. Why? What is is made from and what does it do? ;)

Mono and diglycerides are in many, many things and almost without exception are gluten-free.

I'm confused about mono- and diglycerides too.

I have been avoiding anything that contains them.

Then yesterday I bought a cookbook The Gluten-

Free Baker's Pantry and alot of the recipes

call for shortening. It was explained in the book that

the Mono- and diglycerides in shortening are

Acceptable. Why? I just don't get it. It's accepteable

in some things and not in others?

I eat tons of stuff with mono and diglicerides. My understanding is that Richard is correct-they are almost always gluten-free. If I'm wrong on this I hope someone will correct me because they are a pretty regular part of some of the foods I eat!

While I cannot in good conscience say mono and diglycerides are always gluten-free, I can say that in three eyars I can't remember finding a product that wasn't gluten-free just because of those ingredients. There definitely is absolutely no reason to avoid all products that have them. If they concern you, call the manufacturer.

My understanding is that mono and di's are safe in the USA but can't be trusted from another country. I read that somewhere, but can't remember where.

Right, that's my understanding, too. In the US, I believe they must be gluten-free in foods, but not always in meds. I always call all new products I eat, anyway, but sometimes I still feel suspicious eating something if there any question as to the origin of the ingredients.

      Wow Im a tea drinker and didn't know, perhaps this is why im having issues with my ghost disease.

      She used to take supplements, but her abdominal pain is so debilitating that she hasn't been able to continue.  Her primary care team has been suggesting liquid supplements rather than pill form to help.  They just drew a lot of blood Friday and we are slowly getting all that work back.  I will definitely check into thiamine!  Thanks!

      They have not done that yet.   We are looking at some other treatments to help. And you are correct.  The tickborne illness has been a wild ride.  Our whole family has been battling different tickborne illnesses.  Its expensive and exhausting.

      I cannot tolerate it at all - triggers burning and nausea, ditto aspirin.  Here in the UK I take Paracetamol.

      For back pain, I take a combination of Cobalamine B12, Pyridoxine B 6, and Thiamine B 1 (in the form Benfotiamine), which have an analgesic effect.  These three B vitamins together work way better than those over the counter pain relievers.  Theses are water soluble B vitamins that are easily excreted via the kidneys if not needed.  Thiamine will also help the nausea.
