How Long Till Improvement Shows?

My dd is 11 and we just started her on a trial gluten free diet. She gets upset stomch, very, very easy. She runs to the bathroom after almost every meal. We do know she is somewhat lactose intolerant, can't eat choclate or quite a few artificial sweetners. But her problems seem to be getting worse, no matter how closely we watch what she eats.

I am also getting concerned with her weight. She is 4' 9"or 10" and only 68lbs.

I told the ped. that my mother was celiac, but she didn't seem very concerned about her problem being celiac. The only test she is sending her for right now is a lactose test, too see if her intolerance is worse than we thought.

But she did say to do 3 different trial elimination diets: gluten, dairy, fruit.

We opted to do gluten first, to me that was the easiest! I grew up with it! LOL

Today was only day 2. After breakfast she comes to me all smiles. Telling me she didn't feel sick after eating. She usually gets somewhat crampy after almost every meal.

We get to our meeting and she is all smiles telling Grandma, how good she feels. I never realized that she felt that bad before! :(

My dd who quite frequently has moody, tempermental spells. Was all smiles! It was wonderful!

But it has only been 2 days. How can 2 days make a difference? I'm half afraid, it was just a fluke and we will go back to normal tomorrow. On the other hand I'm half afraid it isn't, and I will have to put her on a gluten free diet. I know its much easier now, than it was when my mom went gluten free almost 30 yr. ago, but still??

Any thoughts, ideas or just encouragement would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks from a newbie!! :)

Hello..

Well the stomach problems are the ones that get better first. It makes sense. once you exclude the guilty food you stop running to the bathroom. When we say that it takes time for celiac symtpoms to go away , we mean that It takes time for the energy to come back and for the loss of vitamins.

So I hope that celiac is the answer to your dd's problems...

Keep us infromed about her progress. I hope she keeps on smiling every single day....! :)

For the first few gluten free days my son had an upset stomach (which he did not really have pre-dx) and had to run to the bathroom frequently. Then, everything was fine. It has been 4 months and he has gained 7 pounds and all of his jeans hit him on his shins. I told him today he has grown more in the last 4 months than he has in the last 4 years! This is my opinion only, but, I would insist on testing for Celiac before your daughter goes gluten free. Once she is gluten free there is a big chance the test would be a false negative if you were to test her later. My son has Celiac but neither I or his dad have it. So, we are thinking he got it from either my mom or his mom (both have major symptoms). It can skip a generation.

Or if she keeps responding pos. to the diet, then you can get the genetic tests. To me....if she has the genes and the diet works...then she is Celiac and no need for an endoscopy or worry over "false negatives". But that is just me.

OMG! I have been researching gluten all over the internet. I just found out that it can manifest in tooth problems. My dd has had so many dental problems over the years. No one could ever suggest a reason. I have gotten so frustrated over the years, I knew her teeth were being brushed well. I did it myself, to be sure for years. Used flouride rinses etc.. But in all her years of going to the dentist we have only gone one or 2 visits without having to go back for fillings. She has ended up with pulled teeth, a retainer, caps, coatings. She barely has a teeth in her mouth that hasn't had work done on it. I'm not even sure anymore how many, have fillings. As I only let them use white fillings on her permenant teeth.

If this diet works, I could care less about tests! LOL My mom has been gluten free for almost 30yr. without an "official" diagnosis. I don't think it existed back them. Doctor just said if you feel better than, go with it!

My dh just came back from McD with her and my youngest. She likes the chipolte wraps, so I told her to get the filling without the wrap. I know the sauce may be bad, but its a start. She also got french fries. She came home so excited, she still feels good and didn't have to go the bathroom at McD's!!

She doesn't even like McD's because she usually ends up feeling yucky, and running to the bathroom. We have been chalking it up to greasy food. McD is all junk anyway, so I don't even like to go there anyway! But dh loves it, he is still a kid at heart! LOL

Thanks!

If lectins were my problem, I would react to wheat germ (the highest source of wheat lectins) and beans. I don't. I only react to bread and pasta, which are the highest sources of gluten. Therefore, my issue is wheat-specific (Gluten/ATIs), not a general lectin issue.   I have eaten a supposedly high lectin diet (I say supposedly because lectin content in these foods is greatly reduced by proper cooking and I eat very few of those foods raw, and even then, rarely!!) for years. My health has improved greatly on my whole foods plant forward diet. I have asked all my drs and a registered dietician about my diet, asked if eating such a high amnt of fiber might interfere with the digestion of any other nutrients and the answer has always been NO.     while doing the gluten challenge I did not eat ANY wheat germ (since it doesn't have hardly any gluten, and I was too sick from the bread and pasta to want to eat much anyway) I will NOT put that poison in my body again. That was a horrific experience and if this is what most celiac patients have to deal with, I am very sorry for them I don't care if I have celiac or NCGS I won't intentionally cause myself that much pain and suffering it's not worth it.

@catnapt,  Wheat germ contains high amounts of lectins which are really hard to digest and can be irritating to the digestive tract.  They can stimulate IgG antibody production as your blood test shows.   Even beans have lectins.  You've simply eaten too many lectins and irritated your digestive tract.   You may want to allow your digestive tract to rest for a week, then start on gluten in "normal" food, not in concentrated vital wheat gluten. This explains it well: Lectins, agglutinins, and their roles in autoimmune reactivities https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/25599185/

I take Now B-1 (100 mg) Thiamine Hydrochloride, and Amazing Formulas L-Tryptophan (1000 mg).   Both are gluten free and free of other allergens.  I've taken them for a long time and haven't had a problem with them. I take Vitamin A from BioTech called "A-25".  It's gluten and allergen free and made in the USA.  It's a powder form of Vitamin A.  I was having trouble digesting fats at one point, but found I tolerated the powder form much better and have stuck with it since.   Tryptophan and Vitamin A help heal the intestines as well as improves skin health.  I get Dermatitis Herpetiformis and eczema flairs when my stomach is upset.  So I'm healing the outside as well as the inside.   I take one 1000 mg Tryptophan before bedtime.   With the Thiamine HCl, take 100 mg to start.  If you don't notice anything, three hours later take another. You can keep increasing your dose in this manner until you do notice improvement.  Remember not to take it in the evening so it won't keep you too energized to sleep. When I first started Thiamine HCl, taking 500 mg to 1000 mg to start was recommended.  If you've been thiamine insufficient for a while, you do notice a big difference.  It's like the start of a NASCAR race: Zoom, Zoom, turn it up!   This scared or made some people uncomfortable, but it's just your body beginning to function properly, like putting new spark plugs in your engine.  I took 1000 mg all at once without food.  It kicked in beautifully, but I got a tummy ache, so take with food.  I added in Thiamine TTFD and Benfotiamine weeks later and felt like I was Formula One racing.  So cool.  You may feel worse for a couple days as your body adjusts to having sufficient thiamine.  Feels sort of like you haven't cranked your engine for a while and it backfires and sputters, but it will settle down and start purring soon enough.  Adjust your dose to what feels right for you, increasing your dose as long as you feel improvement.  You can reach a plateau, so stay there for several days, then try bumping it up again.  If no more improvements happen, you can stay at the plateau amount and experiment with increasing your Thiamine TTFD.  It's like being your own lab rat.  LoL Yes, take one Benfotiamine at breakfast and one at lunch.  Take the B Complex at breakfast. Take the TTFD at breakfast and lunch as well.  I like to take the vitamins at the beginning of meals and the NeuroMag at the end of meals.   You may want to add in some zinc.  I take Thorne Zinc 30 mg at breakfast at the beginning of the meal.   Are you getting sufficient Omega Threes?  Our brains are made up mostly of fat.  Flaxseed oil supplements, sunflower seed oil supplements (or eat the seeds themselves) can improve that.  Cooking with extra virgin olive oil, avocado oil, or coconut oil is also helpful.   @Wheatwacked likes phosphotidyl choline supplements for his Omega Threes.  He's also had dramatic health improvement by supplementing thiamine.  You're doing great!  Thank you for sharing your journey with us.  This path will smooth out.  Keep going!

good luck! vital wheat gluten made me violently ill. I will touch the stuff ever again.
    • catnapt
I wouldn't consider this lucky. I can NOT tolerate the symptoms. And I googled it and I was not even getting 10 grams of gluten per day and I was extremely ill. They'd have to put me in the hospital. I'm not kidding.   I will have my first appt with a GI dr on March 4th   I will not eat gluten again - at least not on purpose   they are going to have to come up with a test that doesn't require it.
