Almost 4 Months Gluten Free But Mucous Stools Why?

just got back from summer break.mY KIDS [sON 13,dAUGHTER 7] have been glutne free for over 4 months now.Dairy free for 3 months.I did mess up a couple of times.But learnt to read labels better.Our meals are all homecooked ,very few processed items introduced.Its usually french potato sticks or dark choc.It does get easier but still lots to learn.

Son started dairy two weeks ago and is doing ok with one serving of dairy with no problems.He has not put on any weight but did gain some height.He will turn 13 tomorrow.He is still quite skinny.His average day starts with one boiled egg and glass of milk.

Then its some orange juice.

Then lunch is curry and rice.

then a snack[french potat stics /banana]

then dinner[curry and rice]

He seems happeir and generally much better behaved and active

He still tires out easily though and his not gaining any significant weight bothers me .

Daughter is doing well.She has put on weight and height.She is still dairy free .Her tummy not bloated,skin has improved too.But her bowel movements still a bit baffling.Sometimes normal,sometimes not formed,sometimes floating,I tried introducing dairy as yoghurt and she didnot adjust well,her stools were bit mucousy and not formed.I think dairy could propbably be responsible for her asthama flare ups.But many things set her off.Strong perfume,mold,etc.

Anyway Yesterday she had lots of mucous and undigested nuts in her stool.She has had nuts before without any issue.And today again after breakfast there was only mucous in the toilet.i did introduce some gluten-free cereal earlier this week but discontinnued it when she had several bowel movements the following day.Its been a wekk since that episode.I am looking for any info you guys can come up with.

I am sorry for going on and on.But would really appreciate any kind of advice. :rolleyes:

I have other foods than just gluten and dairy that bug my gut. Nuts and chocolate are biggies.

So sorry for your daughter's continued problems.

You could try a food diary...personally I find these difficult to keep, but instructive.

Some Celiacs have other food intolerances...soy, corn and dairy are big culprits.

I have my gluten-free kids on a set weekly diet - it starts over after 7 days. That way, if there is a day they're consistently getting sick, I know to examine what's preceded it in the diet. Helps a lot.

I had some gradual improvement in stools after gluten-free but after 15 months my doctor rescently put me on the SCD. I have had a significant response to this diet. You could check out the stories on www.pecanbread.com

I hope you left something out of this list because otherwise if the only protein your teenage son is getting is one egg per day plus a glass of milk, I am not surprised that he is tired and not gaining weight. Teenage boys have hollow legs that they fill up with food on a daily basis. :lol::lol::lol: It seems to be a requirement to becoming a man! :P

Anyway, I'm glad kids are doing better on the diet and I hope you figure out soon what is still causing your daughter's problems. A doctor told me many years ago that mucus in the digestive tract is your body's way of protecting itself from something it finds irritating. I agree that a food diary is a good place to start looking for whatever is causing her to produce so much mucus.

i do keep a diary but never thought a week plan would make it easier.No wonder i cann't see any patterns yet.I will do that starting from today.Thanks :rolleyes:

i am totally on my own[docs and dietitians have not been much help,hubby thinks i am totally loony] and appreciate any kind of advice.Sometimes you need another perspective.You are right about my teenager getting little protein.Will start on a better weekly diet for him.I am Grateful that he tolerates dairy well or I would go nuts :)

these past few days have been a roller coaster,ever since I have come back from vacation my kids have had bad allergies and stuff.I am so glad i found this forum or i would have gone mad.Like all of you my life is my kids,and i want to see them learn how to live and cope with this condition.I wanted all of you to know that every peice of info is APPRECIATED :rolleyes:
