Have You Substituted A Food For What You Can't Eat?

I used to limit my consumption of chips but not anymore. They are my replacement for gluten food. Yes I bake my own goodies but I don't do it everyday and its not like before where I go into the kitchen and grab a cheap cookie (yes oatmeal little debbie). So now I go in the kitchen and grab chips. No I don't have to buy them but I am not looking to stop just yet as I make sure the rest of my diet is pretty good plus when I am ready I will stop doing this.

I am just wondering if anyone else uses another food to make up for losing a whole food group? OR have you done this but got over it, if so how long did it take you?

BTW I can rationalize eating chips all I want even though I know better!!!!

I've NEVER gotten over loosing a whole food group.

For awhile, I just ate dark chocolate which has always been my favorite snack. And ice cream-- But alas, I've become prediabetic-- now I have to cut way back on carbs ! So I've got a double curse-------- :angry: I'm down to celery sticks ! :lol:

As they say, "Life is hard, and then you die. " :)

I posted a recipe on August 14th for chewy chocolate oat chip cookies. They would be a perfect replacement for Little Debbies, just put a melted marshmallow between 2 cookies...mmm. I hope you can still do oats! ;)

Before celiac disease I used to NEVER eat chips -- I didn't even like them very much -- and now I eat them all the time! I'm glad I'm not the only one. :rolleyes:

... one more way to rationalize it (although I doubt you need any help, because I never need help rationalizing junk food) is that chips are almost always available in situations where there's nothing to eat but gluten. ;)

Wow! It is really weird when you find out that there is someone else out there that thinks the same way you do!

I am SOOO there. As soon as I saw written on a package of UTZ potato chips "This is a gluten free food" I was all over it. I was about to OD on them (they are my absolute fav!) :rolleyes:

It took me a couple of months to get it under control and now I eat them infrequently.

But I find that when I see "gluten free" on a packaged food- I am all over it! (right now I am on a rice chex binge!) :P

Yes! I rarely used to eat chips. I would never buy them and keep them in the house. Now I eat them A LOT! I know I need to stop, but I feel deprived from not being able to eat other things, so chips have become my substitute. Like you, I will back away from the chip bag at some point, but right now I'm not ready.

WOW I am so there! :lol:

I never ate chips before. Now I have several I keep in the cupboard -usually sweet potato chips (yum!) and blue-corn tortillas.

What else I am noticing is I can sit and eat an ENTIRE bag of chips and be hungry an hour later.

I think maybe it's our brain trying to fill that empty pleasure center that would easily be satisfied with some small glutenny treat in the past and now we eat an entire bag and still not feel satisfied. :oB)

I eat tortillas and tortilla chips like there is no tomorrow. My rationalization is that I save money and eat less salt when I make the chips from the tortillas. :D :D

My bf used to tease me endlessly for eating nachos daily (which I still feel is a balanced meal), until he moved in and had to eat gluten-free because he eats them now too. ;)

Another substitute I've done is sunflower seeds for croutons on salads. Still gives me a crunch with my lettuce. They are nutritious, too!

I have had great luck replacing chinese rice noodles for spagetti, corn flour for all purpose for recipes that use Baking Powder.

I am having a real addiction to Kettle Corn (the sweet kind) and to Kozy Shack flan. Very high in calories, but gluten free!

I can't eat potato chips or corn chips or pretty much any other kind of chip thing. I can't have potatoes or sunflower oil, and ground corn seems to be a problem for some reason. All the gluten-free pretzels I've found either have potato starch, corn or sunflower oil in them, and most of the rice crackers use sunflower oil as well and are expensive.

So if I want something crunchy pork rinds are the most easily available, inexpensive option. I've tried chips made from cassava root and they're good, but at four plus bucks a bag plus shipping I can't justify it.

Fried rice sticks are also great, but they are messy to make and take awhile and they're messy to eat as well.

I also bought an ice cream maker last summer, and homemade ice cream has become another substitute for all the things I can't have.

When we were little my father used to make pork rinds. It's a whole different experience. I should google how you do that, it's been so long I can't remember how he did it.

Pork rinds are a great angry food. Some times I just need something loud and crunchy. I like the pretzles but at 6 bucks a bag that gets pricey. Pluse most gas stations have Pork rinds not Gluten free pretzels. I am not a big potato chip fan and corn makes me angry and I fly off at people. So If I am planing to be near people I have to limit my corn.

My mom noticed that when I was a kid.

I love pork rinds!!! ( they taste like chicken baked chicken skin)

I would like to munch on pork rinds, but I thought the ones I looked at had wheat in them---- will have to check this out again ! :)

Not only do I suddenly love chips but I invented a dip for them that's filling & gluten-free & milk free! I munch on this frequently. When I get too hungry, that's when I'm very tempted to eat something gluteny. Not good. Try this:

Mix one large brick of cream cheese with one can chopped tomatoes with green chilis (WalMart).

Yum....don't let insensitive people get you down. Remember, if they can't see you wearing a cast, they don't believe you suffer. Hang in there! B)

Yes. I am a diabetic and I need some carbs, but not too many. I don't personally have an issue with gluten, but most bread is make with dairy or eggs which I do have an issue with. So in a restaurant, I can't have bread because I don't know if it is safe. And since my daughter can't have gluten, I feel it would be rude of me to eat something she can't. So we don't have the bread and will have some fries or a plain baked potato instead.

It bugs me that some restaurants will list a bun free burger on their menu, but automatically assume that those ordering it are on a low carb diet. So they throw in a green salad or cottage cheese instead of the fries or chips.

Oh don't get me started on that whole concept. The gluten-free manufacturers are starting to getting better at it, but many of them have a tendency to not just make their food gluten-free, but they also make it egg milk nut yeast sugar salt fat free as well. Come on, let me have some fun. Just because I'm eating gluten free does not automatically mean I want to avoid everything in the universe.

Usually pork rinds are just pork fat and salt. Occasionally some will use oil; why I'm not sure. You also have to distinguish between the pork rinds and the salsa packets some of them put in the bags. There should be two ingredient lists on the bag, one for the rinds and one for the salsa. I never touch the salsa since I have a nightshade issue. But even way back when when I had no food issues I just never saw the point to salsa on them.

I would like to munch on pork rinds, but I thought the ones I looked at had wheat in them---- will have to check this out again ! :)

Sorry, I have to make a correction to my yesterday's post. I listed my dip recipe as milk free & it definately is not! I apologize for the slip. I sometimes forget that even though I cannot tolerate fresh milk, I can handle most cheeses. That doesn't mean others can. Please forgive the error.

I was afraid when I posted this I would be the only one. Lets face it chips are not the healthiest of foods!!!! I am so happy to know it isn't just me.

The whole bag yes and hunger in an hour yes yes yes.

Love nacho chips I don't have to worry about what is in them. Plus I am eating them with fresh salsa (ok it is packaged but in the fridge section) since salsa is SO very good for me it makes it all ok.

So what chips are safe. I know Frito lay says if its in the chip its on the label. BUT I thought that autolyzed yeast was bad and that is in some chips and MSG and so on. I prefer plain chips with Lipton onion soup mix dip. HA thats so not healthy but I eat it.

This doesn't seem to affect my weight either except it isn't' going down LOL Its the Riesling I am drinking that seems to be packing the pounds on lol I saw it was 200 cal per 6 oz serving! Lets face it I am not having one serving of it!!!

Has anyone tried corn thins? I ordered them from amazon and gambled that is would taste ok because I couldn't find them in stores anywhere. I'm glad they were good because you get 12 bags.

If you like something crispy but your watching your weight or like me I'm watching my fats, these are your answer.

They're sorta like a rice cake but they're thinner. So what I do is put my homemade hummus on it. I was looking for something to substitute pita bread. Something with a more of a bite then a soft slice of bread. And it works well. Like I said its thinner then rice cakes so you can taste your filling on top instead of getting a mouth full of styrofoam.

zero fat, gluten free, organic, 22 calories a slice.

      Thanks for your response.  Everything you mentioned he is and has been doing.  Tobacco is not the same as nicotine.  Nicotine, in the form of a patch, does not cause gastrointestinal irritation.  Smoking does. He is not smoking.  Please do your research before stating false information. Dr. Paul Newhouse has been doing research on nicotine the last 40 years at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

      Im so frustrated and still getting the run around trying to reprove my celiac disease which my past primary ignored for 25 years.I understand that theres a ray of medical that doctors are limited too but not listening and telling the patient ( me) that im not as sensitive as I think and NOT celiac!Correction Mr white coat its not what I think but for cause and affect and past test that are not sticking in my medical records.I get sick violently with foods consumed, not eating the foods will show Im fabulous. After many blood draws and going through doctors I have the HLA- DQ2 positive which I read in a study that Iran conducted that the severity in celiac is in that gene.Im glutenfree and dealing with related issues which core issue of celiac isn't addressed. My skin, right eye, left leg diagestive issues affected. I have high blood pressure because im in pain.Im waisting my time on trying to reprove that Im celiac which is not a disease I want, but unfortunately have.It  has taken over my life personally and professionally. How do I stop getting medically gaslight and get the help needed to bounce back if I ever do bounce back to normal?
