Omg I Need A Vent!

So my In-laws have moved in, its not to bad, they are here for maybe 2 weeks every 4 months or so.... its the 2 weeks they are here that are either going to kill me..... or them!

Today I arrived home from a grueling day at work (12 hours) to find some foreign food stuff drizzling nastiness all over my gluten free shelf in the fridge! What you say move "my shelf to the top" my shelf IS the top shelf! and is OFF LIMITS to everyone in this house except me, that was made VERY clear from the start!

I proceed to toss everything contaminated with said nastiness which due to its nature was pretty much everything..... so now in my 9 1/2 hours off (only 8 left as I went grocery shopping afterwards) I get to make a weeks worth of work meals while putting away the groceries.

Then I go to load the dishwasher.... and AGAIN the MIL has overloaded it to the point the sprayers wont move and NOTHING and I mean NOTHING in it is clean, so instead of having 1 load of dishes to do, I now have 3!!! Did I mention I have to go to bed so I can go to work for 12 hours again tonight! Now I only have about 7 1/2 hours before having to go to work not to mention making my meals, doing dishes and OMG what is that all over my kitchen counter! BREAD CRUMBS!!!!!!! rule number 2 in this house NO BREAD ON THE COUNTER! "they" have a seperate area for that right next to the toaster....

Its a good thing they are not here otherwise it wouldn't be pretty, I did however after noticing the dishwasher call the hubby at work and went off on him, no its not his fault.... entirely..... but he has to do something I can't live like this!

At the end of my rope, tired as heck and hope to god I dont kill someone at work tonight from not being rested!

I have a totally gluten-free house, even with guests. There are tons of gluten-free options that will satisfy any gluten eating person. Just say I have a disease and I have found the only way I can stay healthy is if I keep my home gluten-free. I resisted that for about 4 years but never felt 100% so made the change and I feel a lot better.

Its your home, make the rules.

That's really not fair to you, and very frustrating. I'd be on a rampage if it were me. Frankly, if someone is a guest in someone else's home, I think it's common courtesy to simply go by the rules of the house. Period. If you said the top shelf is off limits and no bread on the counters, they should have respected that. The fact that you've got a disease that will make you very sick as a result of careless crumbing should make them even more respectful. :/

I'd either sit them down and have a very serious "talk" with them and offer the ultimatum: they follow the rules or they find a hotel.... Or just have them find a hotel in the first place. Obviously not an easy thing to do... Maybe you could have your husband talk to them, too? They might be more inclined to listen if he steps in on your behalf and makes it clear to them how important this is. Maybe have him give them the whole "a single bread crumb makes her sick" talk. It really could be just misunderstanding... I know when my family would visit my grandma who was diagnosed long before I found out about my gluten issues, we kind of thought she was going somewhat overboard. We just didn't understand. That said, we still respected the house rules that it was a completely gluten free house. We ate what she served, I couldn't bring my corn chips in the house, and that was that. We were the guests in HER home, and whether or not we liked it or thought it was silly, we had to respect her rules. Just thought I'd give you a different perspective on the issue, though.

I'd be super frustrated if I were in your shoes, though. Seriously, why would they put stuff on the top shelf? What's the point? You said not to.... are they the type that purposefully wants to "test" you? Or are they honestly just careless? Either way, it boils down to the fact that it's YOUR home and you NEED to be safe. Lay down the law, lady, and don't feel guilty for it. If they want to stay there, they need to respect your rules. even if they don't like them. As "interesting" as they may feel your rules are, they aren't unreasonable (especially given the circumstances) and they aren't even an inconvenience. If they are purposefully trying to harm you, I would absolutely get them out of there.

News from the ever continuing sage of my life stinks....

First off, my job makes me leave town for 24-36 hours until my return....

after rewashing the dishes from the previous vent I went to bed and got a couple hours nap before I was once again sent "to work" luckily it was only a 9 hour trip rather than the 10-12 I expected.....

I just returned home, saw the last load of dishes I had washed in the kitchen sink all stacked neatly on their sides, went to put them away and the sink was never cleaned out and was nasty, someone had peeled poatoes in it, the peelings were even still there.... so, I have a mini coniption fit then start to calm down and just rewash them... open the dishwasher and son of a @#$%^&* its was over full again and again the dish soap never even came out of the stupid container..... hubby received a call from a very hysterical wife and is very clear that upon "the households" gathering tonight the hooey is about to fly and I am not going to be "nice" this time, I've had it.... all their bread is in the trash! all the cookies, crackers and nasty glutinous stuff I have in the past "pleasantly allowed" in MY house is GONE! they cant keep it under control so I dont get sick they go without, if I dont work THEIR bills dont get paid, I dont kill myself at this job for pleasure!

p.s. Did I mention my mother just informed me she got her pink slip friday, it appears they will be moving in between Thanksgiving and Christmas.... 2 more people to train..... but nooooooo we aren't in a recession just ask the stupid president he should know.

I would have done the same thing, you were nice enough to allow them to bring the poison in to YOUR HOME and if they can't be grownups about it then they just can't bring it in. If they start to tantrum over the stuff you tossed I would show them the door. You shouldn't even be coming home to any dishes in that dishwasher or crumbs on the counter in the first place.

That's pretty much where I am at right now. I need to make this house completely gluten free. I need to get well. Time for a family meeting.

You did the right thing. Good for you! So sorry about your mom. It looks like you are taking control and things can only get better. Hang in there and vent as often as you need to.

Wow--I don't even have severe reactions to gluten, and I don't allow guests to bring it in the house.

Tell them the doctor told you not to let it in the house. They won't argue if they think it's doctor's orders.

      Living with Coeliac Disease since birth, Bread has always been an issue, never too nice, small slices and always overpriced, But Sainsbury's Free From White Sliced Bread seemed to me to be an exception with it's large uniform 12 x 12cm slices that had the bounce, texture and taste of white bread even after toasting with no issue that it was also Milk Free. Unfortunately Sainsbury's have changed the recipe and have made it 'Egg Free' too and it has lost everything that made the original loaf so unique. Now the loaf is unevenly risen with 8 x 8cm slices at best, having lost it's bounce with the texture dense and cake like after toasting resembling nothing like White Bread anymore. Unsure as to why they have had to make it 'Egg Free' as the price is the same at £1.90 a loaf. Anyone else experiencing the same issue with it? - also any recommendations for White Bread that isn't prescription? / Tesco's / Asda's are ok but Sainsbury's was superior.

Finally a pickup came down the road, laughed at our situation, then pulled the VW free of the mud. We followed him back to the ski area where where he started up the rope ski lift and we had an enjoyable hour of skiing and gave us a shot of aquavit  before we left.It was a great rescue.  In some ways this reminds me of your situation. You are waiting for a rescue and you have chosen medical practitioners to do it now or as soon as possible. As you have found out the med. experts have not learned how to help you. You face years of continuing to feel horrible, frustrated searching for your rescuer to save you. You can break away from from this pattern of thinking and you have begun breaking  away by using some herbs and supplements from doTerra. Now you can start trying some of the suggestions thatother Celiacs have written to your original posts.  You live with other people who eat gluten foods. Cross contamination is very possible. Are you sure that their food is completely separate from their food. It  is not only the gluten grains you need to avoid (wheat, barley, rye) but possibly oats, cows milk also. Whenever you fall back into that angry and frustrated way of thinking get up and walk around for a whild. You will learn ways to break that way of thinking about your problems.  Best wishes for your future. May you enjpy a better life.

      Thanks for responding. I researched further and Lindt Lindor chocolate balls do contain barely malt powder which contains gluten. I was surprised at all of the conflicting information I found when I checked online.

      @BlessedinBoston, it is possible that in Canada the product in question is formulated differently than in the USA or at least processed in in a facility that precludes cross contamination. I assume from your user name that you are in the USA. And it is also possible that the product meets the FDA requirement of not more than 20ppm of gluten but you are a super sensitive celiac for whom that standard is insufficient.
