Eating Local, Tips For Eating Out

I live in a small town and really want a few places that I can go out to eat on nights I do not feel like cooking.

I called my favorite place to eat, a golf course with a great view and a real chef. She said she would be happy to cook gluten free and it was a slow night so it would not be a problem. When I got to Golden Oaks I asked the waitress to ask the chef what could be made gluten free. She came out with an offering of three choices and was delighted and well fed.

I think it helped that I called first, It was an off night, it was a higher end place and then I asked what the chef could make gluten free easily.

If that fails I just order broiled scallops( at Red Lobster though this does contain soy). People do seem accommodating if I am friendly. If you look at the menu of a place you can generally make something up. Cooks get bored also. The higher end places to eat seem to like being creative. I travel alot and sometimes it is fun to see what people come up with. Tonight I had a cheese steak served on romaine with sliced tomatoes. It was pretty good.odd but good and warm.

Usually I take a few bites of the meal then wait about 10 minutes to see if it is safe to continue, I get sick fast from gluten and have found this to work well for me.

One night I just had a plate of butter fried mushrooms(ask what they are cooked in). The special of the day was breaded something or other with a blend of three types of mushrooms. Since the meat was already breaded and so was most other things on the menu I explained I was highly allergic to wheat and I wound up with about two cups of awesome mushrooms and a small potato.

So if you have a place you love to eat at Treat yourself sometime.

I was really impressed with what this local club was willing to do for me.

      Thanks, I’m still dealing with the pain and tingling and itching and feeling like bugs or something crawling around on my face and scalp. It’s been a miserable experience. I saw my eye doc last week, the eye itself was okay, so they didn’t do anything. I did take a 7 day course of an antiviral. I’m hoping for a turnaround soon! My life is full of stress but I have been on / off the gluten free diet for the last year , after being talked into going back on gluten to have a biopsy, that looked okay. But I do have positive antibody levels that have been responsive  to a gluten free diet. I can’t help but wonder if the last year has caused all this.

      I don't think any apps are up to date, which is exactly why this happened to you. Most of the data in such apps is years old, and it doesn't get updated in real time. Ultimately there is no substitution for learning to read labels. The following two lists are very helpful for anyone who is gluten sensitive and needs to avoid gluten when shopping. It's very important to learn to read labels and understand sources of hidden gluten, and to know some general information about product labelling--for example in the USA if wheat is a possible allergen it must be declared on a product's ingredient label like this: Allergens: Wheat.

      What is the best gluten free scanner app? I have the "gluten-free Scanner" app. I scanned an almond joy and it says it contains gluten when the package is labeled gluten free

      Certainly, it would b wise to have a gene test done if your physician is open to it as it would provide some more data to understand what's going on. But keep in mind that the genetic test for celiac disease cannot be used as to diagnose celiac disease, only to establish the potential to develop active celiac disease. About 40% of the general population possess one or both of the primary genes known to be associated with the development of active celiac disease but only about 1% of the population actually develop active celiac disease. So, the gene test is an effective "rule out" tool but not an effective diagnostic tool.

      Had Quaker gluten-free oatmeal last night and my stomach is a mess today. NO flu but def stomach stuff. Anyone else?
