Cold Night Sweats

Does anyone ever get cold night sweats? I feel like when it's really cold, I tend to ball up and cocoon myself with in the sheets to stay warm, but at some point in the night I must be overheating because I'll wake up and I'll be drenched in sweat. Mostly on my chest. Sometimes its so bad that I have to put a towel down afterwards because my sheets are sweaty. This usually only happens when its really cold around Fall/Winter time.

What could cause this? Anxiety? Some other medical condition? I don't take any medication so it's not that. I've had this before and after going gluten-free, although I never had this problem until my second year of college. Thats around the same time that I started having stomach symptoms and was really stressed out with my roommate situation. I also had a really bad cold that turned into a bad sinus infection which was the sickest I've ever been. It's also around the time I started working out. So there were a lot of different things going on that make it even harder to try to pinpoint a cause for anything.

Before being diagnosed a few years ago I woke up every hour to change my t-shirt which was wringing wet from sweat. Being totally gluten-free it's a lot better and only 1 or 2 times a night. I sleep with a small towel or washcloth to soak up the sweat now which helps a lot. I dont know why, nor do the doctors, why I still have night sweats. Some say its reactions to other foods, perhaps dairy but even when I dont have it for a day or two I still sweat.

Good luck

You are not alone. :( I get these night sweats year round. I find that they are less severe since I have been gluten free (8 months). I am a woman so it could be a menopausal thing. I am being tested tomorrow for Hypothyroidism so it could be that also. But maybe it is just another celiac symptom. My son had it worse than me and it is a lot less frequent and severe for him since going gluten free. You don't mention how long you have been gluten free...maybe (hopefully) it will go away completely after being gluten-free for a few years.

Night sweats and nightmares are symptoms of hypoglycemia, which can be caused by a damaged small intestine. I used to get them all the time. I blamed it on menopause too, but now I blame it on carbs. I'm following the SCDiet. No more night sweats or nightmares or waking up feeling like I need to run for my life!

Check out the SCDiet under food intolerances. It is a gluten-free diet. It has proven successful for many celiacs. And maybe your night sweats will vanish like mine did.

I'm very confused... My blood test came out negative, I checked all antibodies. I suppose my Total IgA levels are normal (132 mg/dl), so the test should be reliable. Still, I'm not relieved as I can't tolerate even a single biscuit. I need to talk to my doctor about whether a duodenal biopsy is necessary. But it is really possible to have intestinal damage despite having a seronegative results? I have really strong symptoms, and I don't want to keep skipping university lectures or being bedridden at home.

They may want to also eliminate other possible causes for your symptoms/issues and are doing additional tests.  Here is info about blood tests for celiac disease--if positive an endoscopy where biopsies of your intestinal villi are taken to confirm is the typical follow up.

In the Europe the new protocol for making a celiac disease diagnosis in children is if their tTg-IgA (tissue transglutaminase IgA) levels are 10 times or above the positive level for celiac disease--and you are above that level. According to the latest research, if the blood test results are at certain high levels that range between 5-10 times the reference range for a positive celiac disease diagnosis, it may not be necessary to confirm the results using an endoscopy/biopsy: Blood Test Alone Can Diagnose Celiac Disease in Most Children and Adults TGA-IgA at or Above Five Times Normal Limit in Kids Indicates Celiac Disease in Nearly All Cases No More Biopsies to Diagnose Celiac Disease in Children! May I ask why you've had so many past tTg-IgA tests done, and many of them seem to have been done 3 times during short time intervals?

@JettaGirl, "Coeliac" is the British spelling of "celiac". Same disease.

This may sound ridiculous but is this supposed to say Celiacs? I looked up Coeliacs because you never know, there’s a lot of diseases related to a disease that they come up with similar names for. It’s probably meant to say Celiacs but I just wanted to confirm.
