4 Weeks Gluten Free: Felt Good, Not Not Good

Hi everyone,

I have been gluten free for a month now. The first two weeks felts SO good, although I wasnt eating alot of solid food. Alot of smoothies and then solid foods with snacks and dinner (For the first week and a half). Then I got a cold I took DayQuil and cough drops-- both which were gluten free and my costipation came back (which can be expected if the DayQuil was drying me up). But then the next two weeks have NOT been good. i can hardly eat anything without feeling sick, I had to go home from work yesterday. I have tried to be so thorough with any cross contamination, not eating out at all, I have gone through the whole kitchen, all my cosmetics/ products. I am vegan so I'm used to reading all the lables etc.

So my question is: is this just part of healing, sometimes you feel good for a week and sometimes you feel sick for a week (or two). OR am I still getting glutened from some where?? Should I go back to the smoothie diet to let my intestines rest as much as possible?

I felt really good the first couple of weeks too. Then, it wasn't so great. Extreme fatigue. Couldn't leave the house in the morning because I would be in the bathroom a few times. Stools were very soft. I've been gluten-free 6-7 months and my stools are just now looking normal!

Most people give up dairy in the beginning. I did not. I still ate yogurt and cheese. Maybe I would have healed quicker if I had.

Also, from what I've read, many people experience withdrawal symptoms.

Check any supplements you are taking. I made that mistake in the beginning. I thought I was being so careful, but it happened to be in 2 of my supplements.

Hang in there. It does get better. I think it is normal to have ups and downs.

      Thanks Scott. They are gluten-free but cross contaminated.

      Hi there @MCAyr I have a small umbilical hernia which came about during my second pregnancy.   I can just about see it, and feel it, when I stand or sit, but it is far less noticeable when I lie down.  I always know when I am putting on weight because I can get pain and burning near the site, funnily enough not on the hernia itself but either side!  I would imagine bloating could cause the same effect as weight gain. In my case I don't think it is my bowel protruding but a bit of fat  - sorry,  I realise this isn't painting a very pretty picture.  But in truth it is scarcely noticeable.  It has never really got bigger in size. I was rather hoping that it could be operated on but here in the UK they don't seem to operate on every hernia anymore.  My GP isn't remotely worried about it. In a way, I should be thankful - it is like an early warning system that I need to go on a diet! Cristiana

      The hernia description would likely be unrelated to celiac disease, but you'd need to get it checked out by your doctor to be sure it's a hernia.
