I'm Feeling Discouraged

i interviewed for an awesome job back in September...some may remember, i posted about them bringing in a gluten-free lunch for me. i thought the interview went great and was anticipating an offer. i kept calling them and was given the run-around for almost 2 months. i finally gave up hope when they took the job posting off their website.

i had another interview right before Christmas at a new company in town. 10 minutes after i left the interview, they called and requested additional info and said they'd call me as soon as they received it. i waited 2 weeks, left a few messages and finally talked to them today and found out that i didn't get an offer. half of the people they are hiring are going to spend 8 weeks in Canada training and then they'll hire a few more people in March to start working locally. i didn't get an offer to do the training but i'm on the March list.

i'm so disappointed that i didn't get either of these jobs. i'm insulted that neither employer could at least call and tell me. i had to make call after call, leaving messages all the while, before i finally get to speak with someone. i feel like my entire life is on hold, waiting to find a job. my boyfriend and i are in somewhat of a holding pattern right now. we've discussed it and we can't get engaged because we can't afford a ring or a wedding, we can't buy a house because i don't have a job and i'm so sick of sitting home all day! he's working but it's a crappy job so we are contemplating making a big move south if neither one of us can find a decent job by late spring/early summer.

i'm feeling particularly bad for myself today and i think i just need to get this off my chest. i'm going to take a long hot shower and then bake chocolate chip cookies and probably a loaf of bread too. maybe that'll make me feel better.

I hope the chocolate chip therapy helped. :)

Sorry about the waiting and not hearing, so rude of employers, I hope you find a job that you enjoy soon.

It must be something in the air today. I've been crying off and on. I feel like I'm being strangled by frustration.

I just got out of the shower when the water went cold and my fingers are still prunes.

Some day we will be able to look back on these times and laugh.

It's tough right now. Keep putting in hoards of resumes and make sure you don't wait on one company to get back to you before you apply somewhere else. One thing that might help your spirits a bit would be to volunteer someplace a time or two a week. These types of positions can also help you meet people who might be able to help you in your employment search. Most of all don't get discouraged. You got turned down for those jobs because the perfect job is right around the corner and you wouldn't have kept searching for it if they had hired you.

I know just how you feel!!!!

I took a few months off after my Dad died two years ago, and then went looking for work. Everywhere I went they told me I was overqualified. I don't even have a college degree! I just had too much experience I guess. And people seriously suck at calling back, I am continuously astounded at how remarkably rude human resources offices are about not telling people things. I had one company call me back to ask for an interview two months after I applied. Can you say Bite Me?

Hey Lee lee! The job market is a pretty tough place right now...just about everywhere. It's hard to find opportunities as businesses are cutting back. I had two different positions get cut before they were filled...I lost out on both. Anyway, you'll find that most employers don't bother to call back to let you know if you are not being considered. Way it is these days. I agree that you could fill some time volunteering somewhere...it looks good on a resume. You may have to take a job you don't particularly want, temporarily, while you continue to look around for the "right" job. That's what I'm doing at this point. I'm also using some time to take on-line courses to expand my skills and increase what I have to offer a company, as well as add to the types of jobs I can look for.

You WILL find something. Be persistant, and the right job/opportunity will come along. Think positively and have some faith. I'm pulling for you ;)

thanks everyone for the encouraging words. baking seemed to help a bit...i had to pay attention to what i was measuring instead of wallowing in my own self-pity ;)

i just can't get over how rude potential employers can be. i would be happy with a crappy form letter saying "thanks but no thanks" but apparently even that is too hard. i keep trying to remember that i probably don't want to work for an employer who treats potential employees like that.

volunteering is a really great idea - our local co-op has a really good gluten-free section (thanks to the now defunct celiac support group) so i can help out there and even get 5 or 10% off my purchases.

You got turned down for those jobs because the perfect job is right around the corner and you wouldn't have kept searching for it if they had hired you.

i think this will be my new mantra. i do believe everything happens for a reason...

It must be something in the air today. I've been crying off and on.

oh man, i was especially sappy yesterday, before i even got the bad news about the job today. i went to see Marley and Me so i cried at the theater (by myself...how pathetic!) and then i was getting all emotional watching the adorable old couple on The Biggest Loser last night. ugh, i hate days/weeks like these!!

i'm going to eat a bunch of cookies and try to find a cheesy Lifetime movie to watch now...if that doesn't make me feel better...

@Jane02, I hear you about the kale and collard greens.  I don't do dairy and must eat green leafies, too, to get sufficient calcium.  I must be very careful because some calcium supplements are made from ground up crustacean shells.  When I was deficient in Vitamin D, I took high doses of Vitamin D to correct the deficiency quickly.  This is safe and nontoxic.  Vitamin D level should be above 70 nmol/L.  Lifeguards and indigenous Pacific Islanders typically have levels between 80-100 nmol/L.   Levels lower than this are based on amount needed to prevent disease like rickets and osteomalacia. We need more thiamine when we're physically ill, emotionally and mentally stressed, and if we exercise like an athlete or laborer.  We need more thiamine if we eat a diet high in simple carbohydrates.  For every 500 kcal of carbohydrates, we need 500-1000 mg more of thiamine to process the carbs into energy.  If there's insufficient thiamine the carbs get stored as fat.  Again, recommended levels set for thiamine are based on minimum amounts needed to prevent disease.  This is often not adequate for optimum health, nor sufficient for people with absorption problems such as Celiac disease.  Gluten free processed foods are not enriched with vitamins like their gluten containing counterparts.  Adding a B Complex and additional thiamine improves health for Celiacs.  Thiamine is safe and nontoxic even in high doses.  Thiamine helps the mitochondria in cells to function.  Thiamine interacts with each of the other B vitamins.  They are all water soluble and easily excreted if not needed. Thank you so much @knitty kitty for this insightful information! I would have never considered fractionated coconut oil to be a potential source of GI upset. I will consider all the info you shared. Very interesting about the Thiamine deficiency.  I've tracked daily averages of my intake in a nutrition software. The only nutrient I can't consistently meet from my diet is vitamin D. Calcium is a hit and miss as I rely on vegetables, dark leafy greens as a major source, for my calcium intake. I'm able to meet it when I either eat or juice a bundle of kale or collard greens daily haha. My thiamine intake is roughly 120% of my needs, although I do recognize that I may not be absorbing all of these nutrients consistently with intermittent unintentional exposures to gluten.  My vitamin A intake is roughly 900% (~6400 mcg/d) of my needs as I eat a lot of sweet potato, although since it's plant-derived vitamin A (beta-carotene) apparently it's not likely to cause toxicity.  Thanks again!

Hello, @Jane02,  I take Naturewise D 3.  It contains olive oil.   Some Vitamin D supplements, like D Drops, are made with fractionated coconut oil which can cause digestive upsets.  Fractionated coconut oil is not the same as coconut oil used for cooking.  Fractionated coconut oil has been treated for longer shelf life, so it won't go bad in the jar, and thus may be irritating to the digestive system. I avoid supplements made with soy because many people with Celiac Disease also react to soy.  Mixed tocopherols, an ingredient in Thornes Vitamin D, may be sourced from soy oil.  Kirkland's has soy on its ingredient list. I avoid things that might contain or be exposed to crustaceans, like Metagenics says on its label.  I have a crustacean/shellfish/fish allergy.  I like Life Extension Bioactive Complete B Complex.  I take additional Thiamine B 1 in the form Benfotiamine which helps the intestines heal, Life Extension MegaBenfotiamine. Thiamine is needed to activate Vitamin D.   Low thiamine can make one feel like they are getting glutened after a meal containing lots of simple carbohydrates like white rice, or processed gluten free foods like cookies and pasta.   It's rare to have a single vitamin deficiency.  The water soluble B Complex vitamins should be supplemented together with additional Thiamine in the form Benfotiamine and Thiamine TTFD (tetrahydrofurfuryl disulfide) to correct subclinical deficiencies that don't show up on blood tests.  These are subclinical deficiencies within organs and tissues.  Blood is a transportation system.  The body will deplete tissues and organs in order to keep a supply of thiamine in the bloodstream going to the brain and heart.   If you're low in Vitamin D, you may well be low in other fat soluble vitamins like Vitamin A and Vitamin K. Have you seen a dietician?

I do not know this, but since they are labelled gluten-free, and are not really a product that could easily be contaminated when making them (there would be not flour in the air of such a facility, for example), I don't really see contamination as something to be concerned about for this type of product.
