Hi all,

Has anyone here had to deal with taking antibiotics while recovering from gut damage due to celiac disease?

I have an acute sinus and eye infection that I need treatment for...but I am terrified that taking the antibiotics will undo all the healing over the last three years and encourage candida growth that will cause new gut damage.

Does anyone have advice or experience with this issue?

What my family usually does is to make sure we eat yogurt while we are on the antibiotics. That seems to help keep the gut in balance and we don't get the D that so often comes from taking them. Also make sure that the antibiotic is gluten-free of course.

For my sinus infections I usually get the Z-pak. I tried Cipro two months ago but it didn't sit well so I switched to the Z-pak.

I have a penicillin allergy--where if I come in contact with it my airway closes off. So I am only allowed certain meds.

I'm alergic to most antibiotics, but when absolutely needed I use the Z-Pak. I get the name brand, which I know is gluten-free.

I would eat yogurt or take probiotics. Open Original Shared Link. It's the best one I've found (I'm on long-term antibiotics for Lyme).

      If you have hemorrhoids 1x weekly I don't see how you have time to heal from one episode before you experience another one, unless each one is a very minor event. Have you consulted a physician about your hemorrhoid issue? It's not normal to be having an episode every week unless it is really one episode that is not completely healing between weekly flareups.

      No I haven't had one since 2021. I rarely have more than 1 per week.

      Sorry, I see that now as I reread your original post. You say you have hemorrhoids "only once a week" now. When I develop hemorrhoids, which is once every few years now, it generally takes 3-4 days for healing to take place. So, it doesn't seem like you could have much relief time between episodes if you have them weekly. Have you had a lower GI scoping done recently?

      Everyday I eat a medium to large apple in the morning and a large banana at night. I eat a cup of oatmeal in the evening. The ezekiel wheat bread I eat has a good amount of fiber. I haven't dealt with constipation for at least a year. Most of the time my feces are soft.
