Does Coffee Have Gluten In It?

So, I'm an avid coffee drinker, and this topic is one of GREAT concern to me! Anyway, I've heard some rumors that coffee has gluten in it...is that true? And if so, are there any coffee products that do NOT have gluten in them?

Plain coffee is not usually a problem, although you have to check on flavored coffees. My last glutening was from a flavored coffee... the last place I suspected.

I drink plain coffee every morning with no problems at all :)

Plain coffee can be a problem based on the companies processing procedures.

Starbucks, Folgers, Green Mountain, and Royal Cup (commercial use brand only) are all considered safe brands.

Seattle's Best, Fair Trade, and every organic brand I have come across contain gluten, or won't state whether or not they do.

Which of those definitely contain gluten and which just won't state whether they have gluten?

Seatles Best won't make a statement, last I checked (3 - 6 months ago?)

Does that mean that Fair Trade and organic coffee definitely have gluten?

Yes.

Organic is just a blanket term for the 3 - 5 companies I called (names I can no longer remember without searching Google for a while) so you would have to call your brand yourself to be sure it contains gluten. Be weary of clearly labeled "gluten-free" organic coffees, found one only to read it contained barley.

The only way plain unflavored coffee could possibly have gluten in it would be if the beans were roasted in a machine that had roasted coffee where flavoring was added and that flavoring contained some gluten. It would only be from cross contamination.

This too would be highly unlikely and large companies who roast coffee have different machines since the flavoring often leaves a residue which could affect the taste of regular coffee. This would apply to fair trade coffee, organic or conventional beans or coffee grown here in Kona or any other location. Estate growers here do not flavor their coffee at all so Kona is always safe.

Large companies that blend kona and other coffees then flavor them I stay clear of since I'm very sensitive. If I want flavored coffee, I'll grind cinnamon stick or dry orange peel with my beans. Great natural flavoring.

I really dont think you have to worry about plain coffee beans from large companies. who have roasting machines dedicated to a particular roast. If that company makes a lot of flavored coffee then I would think twice.

Or you could just by kona coffee

I LOOOOVVVEE Kona coffee... in NC it runs around $20-30/pound.

Just 5am here in the middle of Kona with thousands of coffee trees 100 feet away.

$20 a lb is a good price for you but not for farmers. The cost to produce it is about $26. so coffee farming is not profitable.

We only sell 7oz bags for $14 since it stays fresher longer when packed smaller. There are 750 farms with about 300 brands from different farms -- getting to be like wine! If you get out to visit, i'll make sure you can taste a bunch of different ones.

All gluten free of course!

Welcome to the  forum @maylynn! Have you had a follow-up endoscopy/biopsy of the small bowel to check for healing of the villous lining? If not, it's about time one was done. As Scott mentioned, I also wonder if you have food intolerances in addition to gluten. Oats (even gluten free oats), dairy, soy, corn and eggs are some of the most common ones in the celiac community.

Is your gluten-free diet strict? Do you eat out in restaurants? If so, you could be getting contamination, and over time that can slow recovery. You may want to get a follow up celiac disease antibody panel done to make sure that your levels have gone down since your last tests. Also, have you had various nutrient levels checked via a blood test, and have you been taking vitamin & mineral supplements since your diagnosis?  The most common nutrient deficiencies associated with celiac disease that may lead to testing for the condition include iron, vitamin D, folate (vitamin B9), vitamin B12, calcium, zinc, and magnesium.    Do you still have celiac disease symptoms?  Many people with celiac...

Hello!  I am here as a last result, hoping for some advice, similar stories, etc. When I was 17, I was diagnosed with Celiac disease. By the time we figured it out my iron levels were so low I had to get infusions, and I had lost 20lbs. in two weeks going from a 5'11 130lbs woman to a 110 lbs. Now, I am 21 and have gained 4 lbs since. Every time I eat a meal, I get three bites in and feel so full that I feel sick. I can't eat a full meal. Something else has to be wrong right? This can't just be more "normal" right? I have done test after test and no doctor in my area can figure anything else out. They have told me I most likely have shrunken my stomach by now with how little I am eating so that has to do...

Thank you so much, Scott. I find it incredibly daunting navigating this celiac space and I find comfort in your wealth of knowledge. Thank you 🙏🏻
