Lactose And Casein Intolerance

This Thursday I have my first GI appointment and hope to get many answers there. I'm trying to figure out why it is I seem to be able to handle drinking milk (in cereal or icecream) yet when I eat yogurt I do not handle it well at all. From what I've read, a person with a lactose intolerance problem may be able to eat yogurt, but my issue seems to be the reverse.

Does anyone have any insight on this or ideas on why this is?

Stumped me on that one. I'm completely opposite. The only dairy I can tolerate is yogurt, because of the bacteria that "eats" the lactose.

You might be reacting to yeast in the yogurt, or some other ingredient. Some flavored yogurts have gluten in them also. Checking the ingredients in the yogurt would be the first step.

sorry... not yeast: bacteria. the predominant bacteria in yogurt is usually a species of Lactobacillus and Streptococcus thermophilus. lately a species from Bifidobacteria have been used (as there are many old wives tales regarding their healthful benefits...).

even so, you still might have an allergy to some of these... :)

do read the label; this is GREAT advice in any case -- many dairy products (especially low-fat varieties) utilize gluten-containing thickeners. we have found several brands of cottage and ricotta cheeses that contain gluten -- as well as sour cream!!

alternatively, the pH of yogurt is fairly low compared to other dairy products (around mid-4 if i remember...), so it may be an acid-issue. does it happen with sour cream or creme fraiche?

The yogurt I've been eating is organic, lowfat, and plain flavored.

The ingredients say: cultured pasteurized organic lowfat milk, pectin, vitamin D3. Then it says: Contains our exclusive blend of six active cultures including L. Acidophilus, Bifidus, L Casei, and L Rhamnosus.

If milk (or icecream) bothers me, I haven't noticed much of a difference between days I have milk or icecream and any other day, but I certainly notice a difference on yogurt days.

      This is a very common question, and the most important thing to know is that no, Guinness is not considered safe for individuals with coeliac disease. While it's fascinating to hear anecdotes from other coeliacs who can drink it without immediate issues, this is a risky exception rather than the rule. The core issue is that Guinness is brewed from barley, which contains gluten, and the standard brewing process does not remove the gluten protein to a level safe for coeliacs (below 20ppm). For someone like you who experiences dermatitis herpetiformis, the reaction is particularly significant. DH is triggered by gluten ingestion, even without immediate gastrointestinal symptoms. So, while you may not feel an instant stomach upset, drinking a gluten-containing beer like Guinness could very well provoke a flare-up of your skin condition days later. It would be a gamble with a potentially uncomfortable and long-lasting consequence. Fortunately, there are excellent, certified gluten-free stouts available now that can provide a safe and satisfying alternative without the risk.

      Before being diagnosed coeliac I used to love Guinness. Being made from barley it should be something a coeliac shouldn’t drink. But taking to another coeliac and they can drink it with no ill effects and have heard of others who can drink it too.  is this everyone’s experience?  Can I drink it?  I get dermatitis herpetiformis and don’t get instant reactions to gluten so can’t try it to see for myself.

      NCGS does not cause damage to the small bowel villi so, if indeed you were not skimping on gluten when you had the antibody blood testing done, it is likely you have celiac disease.

      I will assume you did the gluten challenge properly and were eating a lot of gluten daily for 6-8 weeks before your test, but if not, that could be the issue. If your symptoms go away on a gluten-free diet it would likely signal NCGS.
