Dont Know If I Could Go Through With A Biopsy

Sooo as I am reading I may possibly need a biopsy. Well I will say I am not excited about this at all. Not one bit.

Reasons being. I had my second endoscopy this last summer. They found polyps in my stomach so they took a few boipsies of those during the endoscopy. This would have been fine and dandy if I wouldn't have WOKE UP in the middle of this. So therefore I am now super traumatized. I woke up during the biopsy. I remember feeling pretty much everything.. hearing everything yet I couldn't open my eyes.

I still have issues from this as I can remember feeling the tube going from my throat all the way down to my stomach area. My throat would constrict on it making it hard for me to breathe and I remember gagging pretty horribly my whole body was heaving. I remember the nurses and doctor tell me to "Breathe Kristin.. We need to you to breath.. " then I heard them scrabbling to put more of the junk in my IV. After that I did fall asleep again but.. man I cant get that whole thing out of my head. Even now just typing that out it gives me anxiety. What was worse is I remember being in a shared recovery room with like 5 other people and the nurses would ask them if they recalled anything that had happened.. each person said no. They never asked me!!!!! geez I may seriously need to go see a counselor about this now!! anyways I don't want to scare anyone. My first endoscopy, was super I remember nothing about it at all.

maybe I wont need get another one.. i hope.

I am so sorry you had to go through that rotten experience. It must have been horrible for you. Have you discussed this with your doctor? Maybe you need more sedation than most. They obviously knew that they had screwed up since they didn't ask you the question. I think you need to talk it over with your doctor and find out what the problem was. He can probably reassure you about it not happening again. I think you would be within your rights to ask for anesthesia if you had to undergo it again. But perhaps they can give more sedation than they gave you originally to avoid it happening again, now that they have been alerted. Here's hoping they don't have to repeat it.

I had a colonoscopy done once by a GI who was tee'd off with me, I think. I believe he gave a signal to the anesthesiologist not to start the sedation (although I was certainly billed for it) because I felt absolutely everything and I was wide awake saying "ouch" throughout and when he pumped the air in I thought I would explode. And then he was even more tee'd off because he could not get the scope around the curve (and that really hurt) and I had to have a scan (with another prep) instead. Ahh, the joys of medicine!

I do feel for you.

I'm so sorry you went through this. . .wow!! I've had prob's with anesthesia too. . .and it is sooooo scary. There are two things that work for me - I learned one of the two things from dealing with PTSD, and it doesn't SEEM like it will help, but it's a HUGE help: Get back on the horse. If you dive right back into the thing you are afraid of, the trauma you received the first time will be perceived by your brain in a different perspective. It will always be traumatic - but it won't have power over you any longer.

The second is something I do each and every time they put me under, and I've been put under soooo many times. . .I request to speak to the anesthesioligist MYSELF. I refuse to go under until I've been able to speak to this person. I make SURE this person understands the things I've experienced in the past, I ask them what changes they will make - and I refuse a specific medication they use to 'relax' me prior to the event (it paralizes me, it doesn't 'relax me'. ) Since I've done this, I've had no issues whatsoever.

This is free - the final choice will be your own, and you know better than anyone else what you should do for yourself, but I do know that these two things have been a huge help in my own regard.

You may also ask if the 'pill' scope is available yet. . .you just swallow it, and that's it.

I'm very confused... My blood test came out negative, I checked all antibodies. I suppose my Total IgA levels are normal (132 mg/dl), so the test should be reliable. Still, I'm not relieved as I can't tolerate even a single biscuit. I need to talk to my doctor about whether a duodenal biopsy is necessary. But it is really possible to have intestinal damage despite having a seronegative results? I have really strong symptoms, and I don't want to keep skipping university lectures or being bedridden at home.

They may want to also eliminate other possible causes for your symptoms/issues and are doing additional tests.  Here is info about blood tests for celiac disease--if positive an endoscopy where biopsies of your intestinal villi are taken to confirm is the typical follow up.

In the Europe the new protocol for making a celiac disease diagnosis in children is if their tTg-IgA (tissue transglutaminase IgA) levels are 10 times or above the positive level for celiac disease--and you are above that level. According to the latest research, if the blood test results are at certain high levels that range between 5-10 times the reference range for a positive celiac disease diagnosis, it may not be necessary to confirm the results using an endoscopy/biopsy: Blood Test Alone Can Diagnose Celiac Disease in Most Children and Adults TGA-IgA at or Above Five Times Normal Limit in Kids Indicates Celiac Disease in Nearly All Cases No More Biopsies to Diagnose Celiac Disease in Children! May I ask why you've had so many past tTg-IgA tests done, and many of them seem to have been done 3 times during short time intervals?

@JettaGirl, "Coeliac" is the British spelling of "celiac". Same disease.

This may sound ridiculous but is this supposed to say Celiacs? I looked up Coeliacs because you never know, there’s a lot of diseases related to a disease that they come up with similar names for. It’s probably meant to say Celiacs but I just wanted to confirm.
