Sweets And E-colours

Hi, I have several food allergies and intolerances but the worst off seems to be my reaction to gluten and grains.

My symptoms have become severe since last year so I have been on a reasonably strict gluten free diet and completely avoided snacks and as replacement had fresh or dried fruits instead. This majorly improved my health. For the first time in my life my digestive system WORKED! Until then it felt like I had no metabolism and I would gain weight, bloated, fall ill from every meal but with the new diet I became so happy!

Now here comes the BIG BUT. lol.

My craving for snacking have been off for longer than 4 years.

However, removing GLUTEN out of my diet meant limiting what seemed already limited food list.

Cos of my other sensitivities such as nut, soy, grains especially rice, heavy seasoned food, deep fries, lactose, etc meant I had already removed or found alternatives to those products. Loads of my favourite dishes have become off limits although at the time I did not mind, knowing it would improve my health.

So in replacements for baked goods, came along sweets.

They are not as fresh nor satisfying but that does not seem to be the problem any more.

I have been quite careful and been reading ingredient or 'Suitable for..' list but E colours are hard to learn.

Throughout research I learnt that some E flavourings or colorus contain GLUTEN or other potentially offending substances.. .

HARIBO.

Today I made sure i had ZERO amount of gluten in my dish but still reacted to something.

All the other dishes are fresh so the only suspected food is the Haribo tangastics I had earlier.

How annoying.

Despite being so careful, this happens.

Lately I feel like giving up well, sort of have already and consume on gluten or other offending foods anyway.

I am always followed up by consequences but there have been too many times like today when all the effort seems useless!!!!

Plus I bought Haribos instead of the cheaper ones, thinking they use better ingredients but hm.

E colour is E colour after all, I guess.

I also had high eosinophils which I’ve never had before either - could that be due to gluten consumption?

You're welcome! Be sure the patient eats at least ten grams of gluten per day for a minimum of two weeks prior to repeating antibody testing.   Some people unconsciously reduce the amount of gluten in their diet because the feel unwell.  Three grams of gluten per day is sufficient to produce symptoms.  Only at ten grams or more is the immune system provoked to raise the antibody production high enough so that the antibodies leave the digestive tract and enter the blood stream where they can be measured.   Read the comments below the article...

Thanks for your response and thoughts. Total IgA is normal. HLA DQ2/DQ8 came as heterozygous and the interpretation of the lab that the risk of coeliac disease is mild to moderate. Thyroid function test is normal. I agree that the best way is to repeat tTG antibodies in 6 months time as the result was not massively high.

Welcome to the forum, @Wamedh Taj-Aldeen, How is the patient's thyroid?   You could check for thiamine deficiency which can cause the thyroid to either become hyper or hypo.  TTg IgA can be high in both hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism.  tTg IgA can also be high if patient is taking medications to stimulate the thyroid as in hypothyroidism.   Thanks for visiting!  Keep us posted!
