Brownies (no Cooking Required)

A raw foods recipe, that's pretty easy, and darned tasty. No eggs, flour, white sugar, soy, milk, etc. It DOES contain nuts and chocolate.

2 cups pitted dates

1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa

3/4 cup nut meal (like walnut) + extra for rolling

1/8 to 1/4 honey (optional)

Combine all ingredients in a food processor (like a Cuisinart) until well combined and VERY dense, adding more nut meal (or cocoa!) if necessary. (The food processor may not be able to keep up with it very well.) Measure out 1/8th cup (2 tbsp) at a time and drop (in a ball) into a dish of extra nut meal. Roll it around to coat it, and then flatten a bit. Store between pieces of plastic wrap in the fridge.

Thanks, Tiffany. They sound delicious! I've already copied the recipe onto a card. By chance, we've got all the ingredients in the cabinet, so maybe I'll make some today. Before I found out that I had Celiac I was seriously addicted to date rolls that I used to buy at the health food store. They didn't have cocoa or nuts, and were rolled in coconut...great with a cup of green tea. They were packaged in the store from a larger container purchased from a bulk supplier and I tried without success, to get an employee to find out the ingredients for me, to see if they were safe. So no more date rolls. This sounds like the perfect substitute, and probably better. I might roll them in coconut instead of the nuts because I love coconut. Thanks again for sharing.

What is nut meal? Is it a specialty product? Or just ground nuts (without the shell of course)?

ajlauer, just put walnuts in a food processor and spin them 'round until they have the consistency of crumbs or meal. Walnuts are pretty soft and grind up easily.

yep - just ground up nuts. I'm partial to a version I made using almonds for the nuts and raspberry jam in place of the honey, but the other ones were walnuts and quite tasty as well - and more "traditional brownie". But you can use any nut you're a fan of.

BTW, we've done other articles on this topic that I wanted to share here (not to condone smoking!):

Hi everyone  This has been a crazy year so far... How many people actually get entire sensory overload from gluten or something similar ?  My jaw is going nuts ..and that nerve is affecting my upper back and so on ...  Bones even hurt.  Brain fog. Etc  I had eggs seemed fine.   Then my aid cooked a chicken stir fry in the microwave because my food order shorted a couple key items .   I was so hungry but I noticed light breading and some ingredients with SOY !!! Why are we suffering with soy ? This triggered a sensitivity to bananas and gluten-free yogurt it seems like it's a cycle that it goes on.  The tiniest amount of something gets me I'm guessing the tiny bit of breading that I took one tiny nibble of ...yikes ..im cringing from it .. Feels like my stomach is going to explode yet still very hungry 😔  How long does this last?! Thank you so much

This is an older article, but may be helpful.

I have had orthodontic work done. The 3M invisalign material was no problem. BUT my retainers are another matter. They seemed okay for a few months. Now, however, they cause a burning sensation on my tongue, gums and insides of my lips. The burning sensation is now spreading to my throat. I notice it when I breathe. This is annoying and interferes with my enjoyment of eating. I am visiting with my provider tomorrow. We'll see where this goes from here.

Exactly which blood tests were done? There are a few different ones and some docs don't do them all. Also, your results and reference ranges for each?
