Appointment With Dr. Green Cancelled!

Just wondering if anyone who has been to the Celiac Center in NYC has had an easy time rescheduling an appointment with Dr. Green? I am supposed to see Dr. Green for the first time on Wed. and when I got home from work today there was a message on my answering machine that they have to reschedule! I am so upset about this- I've waited 3 months for this appointment. And I am starting a new job in two weeks so I won't be able to take any days off for three more months. I am just wondering how often this happens? I know doctor's schedules change (I am a nurse practitioner) but it is so frustrating after waiting so long for the appointment. I am keeping my fingers crossed that maybe they will be able to fit me in one day next week (I have a few days off before starting my new job). Well I just needed to vent my frustrations- I have been waiting for this appointment for so long! Thanks for listening.

Jen

Happens often with all sorts of Drs. How's about a positive spin: at least they aren't rescheduling an colonoscopy after you've already done the prep! :P (Almost happened to me...my GI doc cancelled all appointments only a couple of days before I had to start drinking that awful solution...had to wait another few months for the rescheduled time.)

I would, when you get your new appointment date, just explain to your new employers what happened, and if necessary, take documentation to explain the cancellation of the appointment. You are probably in a really good place being a nurse practitioner, that they are aware of rescheduling/conflicts and will work with you. Just as most employers will work with you if you have irrevocable plane tickets for a vacation when you take a new job, as long as you are up front with them, I would certainly believe you could work this out with your new employer. And if not, I don't think that's a place I would work for long.

It doesn't surprise me that he's hard to see. Peter Green is the most famous doctor specializing in the most common autoimmune disorder. He likely gets called away frequently for very difficult Celiac-related cases, in addition to his hectic schedule of lectures, teaching, appearances, etc. I didn't even try to see him because does not take my insurance - but I did see another Columbia Celiac Center doctor, Susie Lee, as well as the Center's resident celiac dietician. I also got a bone density test, Celiac serology blood tests with extensive info (IGG, IGA, TTG IGA, Iron Panel, Vit. B12, Hepatic Panel, TBC Panel, Metabolic, etc.), and an endoscope/biopsy exam done there. It was very worthwhile and I'm glad I went.

This article has some detailed information on how to be 100% gluten-free, so it may be helpful (be sure to also read the comments section.):

Wheat flour is fortified with vitamins in the U.S. as a part of USDA policy. Gluten free facsimile products are not fortified. There is no government mandate for such. When you remove wheat flour by going gluten free, you may be removing a significant source of vitamins.
