Need Help With Chinese Appetizers

RDR

Recommended Posts

RDR Apprentice

Hi, for the last few years I've been craving Chinese Appetizers such as Tempura coated chicken fingers, beef teriyaki, spareribs and pork strips with the pink sauce covering them, fried wontons, and marinated chicken wings. The problem is I'm allergic/intolerant to gluten/wheat, corn, soy and rice. Does anyone know of a substitute for soy, teriyaki or ah-so sauce that will fit into my allergies/intolerances? or have a recipe that has easily substituted ingredients?

I heard from a friend of mine that he saw a show on Veria or Planet Green that showed tempura batter made with tapioca starch or potato starch but I haven't been able to find anything on it? has anyone seen it?

Any help you can give will be greatly appreciated :D. Thank you in advance.

Here's a recipe for tempura. You'd have to substitute something for the rice flour. If you put the word tempura into the search box in the baking forum other reipes similar to the ones you mentioned, pop up. Good luck!

Thank you missy'smom :D As funny as this sounds I actually forgot to search for the word tempura. I searched for Chinese, Appetizers, Chicken fingers, goldfingers but just forgot the word tempura  .

Here is a link to a mock soy sauce. It has corn free substitutes too. It's in the instructions part. There have been no reviews on it though. We might do this. Dd is allergic to soy.

Forgot to add the link. lol

That's interesting. My sister claims that on Snopes.com no one has a bad reaction to soy. I pointed out that soy is on the list of the top 8 food allergens in the US. What are your dd's reactions to soy? Btw, I never heard of that web sight before, so looked into it. If they told me that the earth was round, I wouldn't bielieve it!

Are you kidding? Snopes is awesome for debunking urban legends. I finally got some of my friends to stop forwarding me junk by doing a 'reply all' to some of their emails, and pointedly referring them to snopes, including the link for the specific legend/email/whatever, and the copying and pasting the relevant paragraphs. After a couple of 'reply all' in which I pointedly sent my response to them and CC'd every email I could find in the body, they finally quit. Well for a while they quit emailing me entirely too. :)

Anyway....I react to soy very similar to gluten right now. I get anxiety and panic attack, muscle twitching, sweating, and insomnia. It took a while to figure out what was causing this for me.

I definitely will Tina :D. I'm planning on making a batch of different sauces on Sunday afternoon, with the ones you guys posted here plus an Arby's copycat BBQ sauce I found at Todd Wilbur's site :D.

Oh, it is good with chicken! Then yesterday my parent's came to visit and we had it on tempura shrimp. Because it is fresh it is nicer than anything rom a bottle (and tons safer! I can't do msg.)

Be sure to play with the vinegar, sugar and xanthan gum to get the taste and texture you want. I would start out conservatively and then gradually add more in until you are happy. I like mine on the less sweet side (so you might want more sugar.)

I hope you have a wonderful, crave-satisfying meal!

Also check out the gluten free gobsmacked website for some appetizer ideas. The woman who writes the blog is married to a man from Korea and they adopted a little girl from China. She does great Asian foods, including potstickers.

OMG! Thank you for the site Lisa :D. The very first recipe I saw when loading up the page was Croissants, and all the ingredients look within my allergies :D. As for crave satisfying, both the Croissants and the sweet and sour chicken with steak teriyaki will def do that :D.

My sister claims that on Snopes.com no one has a bad reaction to soy.

The only thing Snopes says about reactions to soy is that it hasn't yet been proven whether soy is linked to thyroid disease and certain types of cancer. It classifies this belief as "undetermined" rather than "true" or "false." It doesn't say anything at all about intolerance or allergy to soy.

We finally made the tempura chicken last night with the sweet and sour sauce. We used Carol Fenster's sorghum flour blend to make the batter and substituted guar gum for the xanthan gum in the sauce. It came out tasting very similar to what we used to eat and tasted great :D. Thanks again :D. Our next shots at making are oriental chicken wings (the chinese restaurant we always loved actually posted their recipe - Open Original Shared Link - would go great with the mock soy sauce), beef teriyaki (the mock teriyaki sauce looks perfect for it :D), wontons, boneless spare ribs and pork strips(still looking for a good soy/corn free recipe for char siu sauce for the 2 of them :D). This is actually getting to be both a fun and tasty project ;).

Made the Lobster sauce from Kowloon's website. It was phenomenal! Made it with Ground pork (sausage meat) and served it on a bed of french fries. It tasted like the Asian equivalent to Chili Fries :D. Making the Teriyaki steak tonight using the mock teriyaki sauce. The sauce came out tasting great. Had the steak marinating overnight.

Good news! It worked! :D

I used the mock soy sauce recipe omitting the vitamin c (couldn't find one without corn in it) to make the soy sauce then refrigerated it a bit. Later on I made the teriyaki sauce recipe using the mock soy sauce in place of the soy sauce. The next step was the easiest :D, marinate the steak over night :D.

It tasted just like the real thing!!! Thank you all again :D!

hello all and thanks for the soy sauce alternative recipe link at recipezaar ... i really needed it. i use the zaar all the time but never thought to look for something like that there.

anyway ... for what it's worth ...

my thyroid doctor says that soy contains two chemicals that are bad for your thyroid - daidzein and genistein. here's what he wrote in his article for a medical journal.

... Daidzein and genistein inhibit the production of thyroid hormone and inhibit the conversion

of (inactive) T-4 to (active) T-3. ...

i have found lots of conflicting info on soy ... and am befuddled to say the least. but, i am going to do my best to eliminate soy completely and see if my thyroid medicine works better.

by the way ... thanks to you all for all of your posts ... i love this forum ... it has helped me so much.

Welcome to the celiac.com communiuty, @Matthias! Yes, we have been aware that this can be an issue with mushrooms but as long as they are rinsed thoroughly it should not be a problem since the mushrooms don't actually incorporate the gluten into their cellular structure. For the same reason, one needs to be careful when buying aged cheeses and products containing yeast because of the fact that they are sometimes cultured on gluten-containing substrate.

The one kind of food I had been buying and eating without any worry for hidden gluten were unprocessed veggies. Well, yesterday I discovered yet another pitfall: cultivated mushrooms. I tried some new ones, Shimeji to be precise (used in many asian soup and rice dishes). Later, at home, I was taking a closer look at the product: the mushrooms were growing from a visible layer of shredded cereals that had not been removed. After a quick web research I learned that these mushrooms are commonly cultivated on a cereal-based medium like wheat bran. I hope that info his helpful to someone.

I might suggest you consider buckwheat groats. https://www.amazon.com/Anthonys-Organic-Hulled-Buckwheat-Groats/dp/B0D15QDVW7/ref=sr_1_4_pp?crid=GOFG11A8ZUMU&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.bk-hCrXgLpHqKS8QJnfKJLKbKzm2BS9tIFv3P9HjJ5swL1-02C3V819UZ845_kAwnxTUM8Qa69hKl0DfHAucO827k_rh7ZclIOPtAA9KjvEEYtaeUV06FJQyCoi5dwcfXRt8dx3cJ6ctEn2VIPaaFd0nOye2TkASgSRtdtKgvXEEXknFVYURBjXen1Nc7EtAlJyJbU8EhB89ElCGFPRavEQkTFHv9V2Zh1EMAPRno7UajBpLCQ-1JfC5jKUyzfgsf7jN5L6yfZSgjhnwEbg6KKwWrKeghga8W_CAhEEw9N0.eDBrhYWsjgEFud6ZE03iun0-AEaGfNS1q4ILLjZz7Fs&dib_tag=se&keywords=buckwheat%2Bgroats&qid=1769980587&s=grocery&sprefix=buchwheat%2Bgroats%2Cgrocery%2C249&sr=1-4&th=1 Takes about 10 minutes to cook. Incidentally, I don't like quinoa either. Reminds me and smells to me like wet grass seed. When its not washed before cooking it makes me ill because of saponins in the seed coat. Yes, it can be difficult to get much dietary calcium without dairy. But in many cases, it's not the amount of calcium in the diet that is the problem but the poor uptake of it. And too much calcium supplementation can interfere with the absorption of vitamins and minerals in general because it raises gut pH.

What you’re describing really does not read like typical IBS-D. The dramatic, rapid normalization of stool frequency and form after removing wheat, along with improved tolerance of legumes and plant foods, is a classic pattern seen in gluten-driven disease rather than functional IBS. IBS usually worsens with fiber and beans, not improves. The fact that you carry HLA-DQ2.2 means celiac disease is absolutely possible, even if it’s less common than DQ2.5, and many people with DQ2.2 present later and are under-diagnosed. Your hesitation to reintroduce gluten is completely understandable — quality of life matters — and many people in your position choose to remain strictly gluten-free and treat it as medically necessary even without formal biopsy confirmation. If and when you’re ready, a physician can help you weigh options like limited gluten challenge, serology history, or documentation as “probable celiac.” What’s clear is that this wasn’t just random IBS — you identified the trigger, and your body has been very consistent in its response.
