When Do I Start Gluten Again?

I went gluten-free on April 11th. I have an appt with the GI on May 23rd. If he does test for celiac disease (please! please!) , I want to have some gluten in me. Was thinking to start back on gluten May 11th - when the cookie dough from Nathan's fundraiser is delivered! Is 12 days enough time? Can I get away with less than 12 days? What do I need for accurate test results?

Thanks!

Unfortunately, that isn't long enough. Most doctors recommend 3 months of gluten prior to testing for accurate results. Now, on the other hand, you've only been gluten-free about 3 days....so just go back to a normal diet now and your testing should come out fine. You want to get accurate results, so I wouldn't risk another two weeks eating gluten-free, etc.

Yes you need to be on longer then 12 days...most recommend 3 months to get accurate results. I would just get back on gluten now since you haven't been gluten-free for long.

my son was gluten-free for four months then went back on gluten for three months (awful!!) and still showed negative blood work. :o(

If a Celiac person is successful in following a gluten-free diet, they can go into remission.   They may not have a reaction to gluten without a precipitating event like an injury or infection or even emotional or mental stress.   Following a strict gluten-free diet at home, then indulging in gluten containing products abroad without a reaction can be explained by this remission.

Approximately 10x more people have non-celiac gluten sensitivity than have celiac disease, but there isn’t yet a test for NCGS. If your symptoms go away on a gluten-free diet it would likely signal NCGS.
