Celiac Maybe, Parasites 99% Sure

Hi everyone,

I have been off gluten for some weeks now and also off milk for a week. But my symtomes haven't improved. They have gotten worst for the most part (runny nose, congestion, asthma, headaches pink burning or watery eyes). I have some symtomes that make me think I may have celiac but I haven't been tested for the whole celiac panel and was also considering food allergies and intolerances other than celiac.

My symptomes of lethargy, lack of clairity, lack of attention and frequency of BM have gone up. I found out that in my stools I am passing a lot of the food I eat and sorry for saying this but I also found parasites in my my stools and they look like pins and are 1 inch long. My doctor sent me to do the sample for the analysis. Anyway, I am always sooooooooooooo hungry but dont have a choice of food. I have stopped consuming gluten, dairy and almost all sugar and I am eating rice all the time. After I stopped eating gluten, I first increased my intake of sugar and I crave sweet food. I feel bloated and no wonder because I am eating all the time and then going to the washroom so often 3-5 times when I am not constipated. I am definitely overeating when I have never had a big appetite. I am eating until it is too late.

My asthmatic symptoms have increased and eating so much, I probably don't have much space to bread in my stomach.

Finally, my doctor doesn't have a final diagnostic and he is careful. He wants me to do more testings.

My general symptoms: feeling of hunger, feeling of never satiated, food in my stools, parasites, headaches sinus, asthma and allergy symptoms that are stronger inside home than outside.

Is everything due to the parasites and are they mimicking allergies and celiac?

I have asked my doctor to send me for the fool celiac panel this time and he did. Should I do the tests now or should I wait that testings and medications are done for the parasites just in case they are mimicking celiac disease?

When you start cutting a lot of foods out of your diet (gluten, dairy, etc...) you need to make sure that your remaining foods are nutritious and satisfying. If you're surviving on rice I'm not surprised that you're hungry all the time! Rice (especially white rice) goes through your digestive system very quickly. I eat it pretty much every day, but I also eat a LOT of fruits and vegetables plus nuts and seeds, legumes, eggs, a little meat, etc... High-calories foods like nuts, coconut milk, and avocado are very satisfying and perfectly healthy in reasonable amounts.

In addition to that, it sounds like you have a lot of problems with allergies (asthma, runny nose, watery eyes, etc...). Have you seen an allergist? In addition to changing your diet you might need to take antihistamines or get allergy shots... it can make a huge difference. Gluten intolerance can do a lot of nasty things to a person, but it doesn't explain everything.

Since you've been "off gluten for some weeks now" it's likely that your celiac panel will come back negative. However... the gluten-free diet won't hurt you and it won't interfere with any treatments for parasites (which might mimic some of the symptoms of celiac, but won't damage your villi).

Before I have the celiac panel done, I will eat have some barley and rye... to know if I am reacting to wheat or if I am a real celiac case. Also, I have been glutened once or twice during those weeks since I stopped eating gluten.

For my allergies, you are right that cannot be all gluten and my doc was going to tell me it was seasonal allergies but then I am more sick at home than outside. I don't sneeze near trees and grass thanks God. I also live in a new appartment and cannot imagine I could have moulds. But maybe dust mites + parasites can do the job alone.

I have an appointement tomorrow with the allergy and asthma specialist but I had allergy testing done twice and I have a mild allergy to dust mites and to maple tree. The doctor I saw the last time is a very well known one here and he said I have very little allergies and that was in 2006. Before that, I had another allergy testing around 2000 and back then I was told the same thing you have very little allergy so you're lucky. But I was already complaining about sinusitis and rhinitis. In 2006, I had testing done for asthma and also sinus x-rays and it came negative even though I already had asthma symptoms.

Anyway this year when I learned about the trouble done by wheat and gluten and more about food sensitivities, I thought Eureka I found why I have all these problems it is the food! But I have no clear diagnostic. I am very lucky however in that I have a doctor who even when he is not familiar with something listens and isn't bothered by my suggestions. Even though he asked me if I still need his help but he said it nicely and he is after his own diagnostic.

Tomorrow when I see the allergist, I am going to try to ask for everything from casein and to fructose (why I can't stand honey?). I hope these skin tests are good.

Maybe I am not eating nutritious food since I stopped gluten and milk. I just find hard to eat vegetables now because I have craving for good comfort food and it is like my taste has forgotten most fruits and veggies. I am doing better for tha last two days though and I believe it is due to the reintroduction of vegetables and meat. I was eating little veggies for some weeks and eating fries as comfort food. Also, because I was documenting i noticed that some food like dates give me gaz.

I really should follow the blood type diet because that diet works like a cure for me but I dont eat enough meat by choice. Green vegetables, meat and seeds are the best on my system but they are all caveman food and I want fun good food. if anybody can tell me how I can still have ice cream in case my allergy to milk becomes official, I would be grateful.

There's a company called "So Delicious" that makes ice cream out of coconut milk :) When I was really craving ice cream I even experimented with making smoothies using frozen fruit and coconut milk... it's pretty convincing as a substitute! Plus I guarantee it will fill you up. One can of full-fat coconut milk has more than 800 calories.

It is hard giving up those comfort foods! Have you found a store where you can buy gluten-free goodies? When I realized that I needed to stay on the diet permanently I went and bought a bunch of gluten-free cookies and soy milk to drown my sorrows :P

By the way... make sure you're getting a good amount of gluten (barley, rye) every day if you're going to get the celiac test. Otherwise you could easily get a false negative.

I doubt that I will find that ice cream in Canada but thanks anyways. Maybe if I go to some of the health food stores. What I miss the most is creamy tasting comfort food so even though I dont like the coconut milk, I may start soon to eat it. I have found some places that sell gluten free food and even the restaurant and snack and juice bars. Now, when I am going for a brunch with my friends I tell them wait let me check the website and then I tell them where I can eat. But I don't like most of the gluten free cookies because I never liked most cookies or cakes. I am a very fussy eater so it is complicating things. I think that I am going to learn to make some stuff and also educate my taste to accept new food :rolleyes: at least I will try.

Thanks for the the tip on eating gluten and celiac test. Even if I dont get a positive result, I will avoid celiac unless I have no reaction to Barley and Rye.

Now, my allergy testing was done today. And I am allergic to nearly nothing! Same thing than my last tests I have a mild allergy to Maple leaf and slighly to grass mix. No indoor allergies have shown up...just after the doctor has told me he was thinking of indoor allergies after I described my symptoms. No food allergy to wheat, rye, barley, corn, milk, soya, egg and some of the fruits he did. After that and with my digestive symptoms, he said I could have celiac. He is also going to arrange a lactose and fructose testing.

Now, I have a few more paths to explore:

-celiac...have to complete the testing.

-parasites...wait from the testing.

-and last but not least, I wonder if my congestion, sleep apnea and breathing difficulties could not come from a nose problem. I have heard about the septoplasty, the surgery that helps people who have trouble breathing with their nose...it is not a nose job :lol:

I am doing much better with my allergy symptoms and it is maybe not just my diet switch (more meat and veggies) but also the Black Cumin Oil I take. This is something for anyone...this oil is magic. I am reading a book called: "Black Cumin, the Magical Egyptian Herb, for Allergies, Asthma and Immune Disorders" by Peter Schleicher and Mohamed Saleh.

      @Jane02, I hear you about the kale and collard greens.  I don't do dairy and must eat green leafies, too, to get sufficient calcium.  I must be very careful because some calcium supplements are made from ground up crustacean shells.  When I was deficient in Vitamin D, I took high doses of Vitamin D to correct the deficiency quickly.  This is safe and nontoxic.  Vitamin D level should be above 70 nmol/L.  Lifeguards and indigenous Pacific Islanders typically have levels between 80-100 nmol/L.   Levels lower than this are based on amount needed to prevent disease like rickets and osteomalacia. We need more thiamine when we're physically ill, emotionally and mentally stressed, and if we exercise like an athlete or laborer.  We need more thiamine if we eat a diet high in simple carbohydrates.  For every 500 kcal of carbohydrates, we need 500-1000 mg more of thiamine to process the carbs into energy.  If there's insufficient thiamine the carbs get stored as fat.  Again, recommended levels set for thiamine are based on minimum amounts needed to prevent disease.  This is often not adequate for optimum health, nor sufficient for people with absorption problems such as Celiac disease.  Gluten free processed foods are not enriched with vitamins like their gluten containing counterparts.  Adding a B Complex and additional thiamine improves health for Celiacs.  Thiamine is safe and nontoxic even in high doses.  Thiamine helps the mitochondria in cells to function.  Thiamine interacts with each of the other B vitamins.  They are all water soluble and easily excreted if not needed.       Thank you so much @knitty kitty for this insightful information! I would have never considered fractionated coconut oil to be a potential source of GI upset. I will consider all the info you shared. Very interesting about the Thiamine deficiency.  I've tracked daily averages of my intake in a nutrition software. The only nutrient I can't consistently meet from my diet is vitamin D. Calcium is a hit and miss as I rely on vegetables, dark leafy greens as a major source, for my calcium intake. I'm able to meet it when I either eat or juice a bundle of kale or collard greens daily haha. My thiamine intake is roughly 120% of my needs, although I do recognize that I may not be absorbing all of these nutrients consistently with intermittent unintentional exposures to gluten.  My vitamin A intake is roughly 900% (~6400 mcg/d) of my needs as I eat a lot of sweet potato, although since it's plant-derived vitamin A (beta-carotene) apparently it's not likely to cause toxicity.  Thanks again!

      Hello, @Jane02,  I take Naturewise D 3.  It contains olive oil.   Some Vitamin D supplements, like D Drops, are made with fractionated coconut oil which can cause digestive upsets.  Fractionated coconut oil is not the same as coconut oil used for cooking.  Fractionated coconut oil has been treated for longer shelf life, so it won't go bad in the jar, and thus may be irritating to the digestive system. I avoid supplements made with soy because many people with Celiac Disease also react to soy.  Mixed tocopherols, an ingredient in Thornes Vitamin D, may be sourced from soy oil.  Kirkland's has soy on its ingredient list. I avoid things that might contain or be exposed to crustaceans, like Metagenics says on its label.  I have a crustacean/shellfish/fish allergy.  I like Life Extension Bioactive Complete B Complex.  I take additional Thiamine B 1 in the form Benfotiamine which helps the intestines heal, Life Extension MegaBenfotiamine. Thiamine is needed to activate Vitamin D.   Low thiamine can make one feel like they are getting glutened after a meal containing lots of simple carbohydrates like white rice, or processed gluten free foods like cookies and pasta.   It's rare to have a single vitamin deficiency.  The water soluble B Complex vitamins should be supplemented together with additional Thiamine in the form Benfotiamine and Thiamine TTFD (tetrahydrofurfuryl disulfide) to correct subclinical deficiencies that don't show up on blood tests.  These are subclinical deficiencies within organs and tissues.  Blood is a transportation system.  The body will deplete tissues and organs in order to keep a supply of thiamine in the bloodstream going to the brain and heart.   If you're low in Vitamin D, you may well be low in other fat soluble vitamins like Vitamin A and Vitamin K. Have you seen a dietician?

      I do not know this, but since they are labelled gluten-free, and are not really a product that could easily be contaminated when making them (there would be not flour in the air of such a facility, for example), I don't really see contamination as something to be concerned about for this type of product.
