Stevia: Problems With It? Am I Alone?

Does anyone every have problems with Stevia? I got it b/c I'd heard that it was better than Splenda (which I never liked anyway purely on taste). I also got Truvia. I tried the Truvia first. I liked it just fine. I never reacted badly to it. I ran out of it though and so I busted out my Stevia which has prepackaged serving sizes. I only have one serving with my one cup of joe a day and my gluten-free creamer (which I also didn't have problems with). I've not had a problem until now.

After a few uses I noticed I would get the same kind of thing that I get when I have gluten...gas, bloating, pain and the big D. Everything I've read says that Stevia doesn't have this problem for people (unless they have large quantities). I've also read that it should be fine for people with Celiac.

However, I know that everybody is different so what works for all may not work for a small few. I just want to know just how alone I am in this one.

I could be wrong, it could be something else but I don't think so.

BTW, the Honey Nut Chex are AWESOME! I love them.

I have no problems with stevia, but I do react to Honey Nut Chex. :(

I can't stand the taste of stevia, and love Splenda...so yes, we are all different. I would stop eating both, then try one at a time. I am willing to bet the Honey Nut Chex are getting you.

There are some people who do get diarrhea from different sweeteners...Truvia even has a statement on the box to that effect. Truvia also is made from the stevia plant.

I thought the Honey Nut Chex were gluten-free? It says it is gluten-free on the box and I don't see anything listed that makes me suspicious. Though, the box does not mention whether or not there could be cross contamination as the usual practice.

However, for the last two days I've been reacting like I've had gluten. It is so frustrating trying to figure out the things that cause my reaction. I hate when I get an attack it is so draining.

My son just told me "Mom, I think you've had gluten" and I asked him why and he said "because you're in the bathroom a lot lately" :(

So, now the Chex our out, the Stevia is out, the coffee is out, the creamer is out and I'm back to scratching my head and only leaving the house for short trips and scoping out the bathrooms. :angry:

I cant do ANY artificial sweetners so my answer wont be helpful at all sorry... when i even have a diet soda i will feel like the flu for at least three days. awful experience. it was worse than a glutening.

also i had a reaction to honey nut chex but it wasnt a typical gluten reaction for me. it made me very tired and gave a me a queesy tummy... gluten for me usually lloks more like:

cramps, bloating, diarrhea, fatigue, brain fog, pressure, and the next day i will be exhausted like ive run four miles. honey nut chex was merely an afternoon of ill feeling. so i dont know what it was but it didnt seem gluten related to my body

I am one of those people who have C instead of D. I use Truvia to help keep me regular, however, I have to be careful as to how much I use it or it can go in the wrong direction!!!! I use three packets on my cereal in the AM and then use Sun Crystals, another stevia for sweetening fruit, etc. Splenda has a lot of bad side effects, just Google it once, you might never eat it again. I had this metal awful taste in my mouth for a long time and when I discontinued the Splenda, it went away. That is just one of the awful side effect of Splenda. Actually I try not to eat any other sugar substitutes other than Stevia. It is jus part of a new way of eating so that aI feel good......I am doing Weight Watchers online which has helped me lose 25#. I have been gluten intolerant for five years. It is just a way of life that I accept and it really isn't much bother for me anymore.

      Have you tried Pure Encapsulations supplements? This is a brand my doctor recommends for me. I have no issues with this brand.

      plant sources of calcium, such as spinach, have calcium bound to oxalates, which is not good. best source of calcium is unfortunately dairy, do you tolerate dairy? fermented dairy like kefir is good and or a little hard cheese. i do eat dairy, i can only take so much dietary restriction and gluten is hard enough! but i guess some people do have bad reactions to it, so different for everyone.

      i take b12, folate, b2, b6, glycine, Nac, zinc, vk2 mk4, magnesium, coq10, pqq, tmg, creatine, omega 3, molybdnem (sp) and just started vit d. quite a list i know.  I have high homocysteine (last checked it was 19, but is always high and i finally decided to do something about it) and very low vitamin d, 10. have been opposed to this supp in the past, but going to try it at 5k units a day. having a pth test on friday, which is suspect will be high. my homocysteine has come down to around 9 with 3 weeks of these supplements and expect it to go down further. i also started on estrogen/progesterone. I have osteoporosis too, so that is why the hormones.  anyway, i think all celiacs should have homocysteine checked and treated if needed (easy enough with b vit, tmg). homocysteine very bad thing to be high for a whole host of reasons. all the bad ones, heart attack , stroke, alzi, cancer..... one of the most annoying things about celiacs (and there are so many!) is the weight gain. i guess i stayed thin all those years being undiagnosed because i was under absorbing everything including calories. going gluten-free and the weight gain has been terrible, 30#, but i'm sure a lot more went into that (hip replacement - and years of hip pain leading to inactivity when i was previously very active, probably all related to celiacs, menopause) yada yada. i seemed to lose appetite control, like there was low glp, or leptin or whatever all those hormones are that tell you that you are full and to stop eating. my appetite is immense and i'm never full. i guess decades or more ( i think i have had celiacs since at least my teens - was hospitalized for abdominal pain and diarrhea for which spastic colon was eventually diagnosed and had many episodes of diarrhea/abdominal pain through my 20's. but that symptom seemed to go away and i related it to dairy much more so than gluten. Also my growth was stunted, i'm the only shorty in my family. anyway, decades of malabsorption and maldigestion led to constant hunger, at least thats my theory. then when i started absorbing normally, wham!! FAT!!!

      Great advise there I agree with the aniexty part, and the aura migraine has I suffer both, I've also read some great books that have helped I'm going too look the one you mentioned up too thankyou for that, I find a camomile tea just a small one and a gentle wind down before bed has helped me too, I suffer from restless leg syndrome and nerve pain hence I don't always sleep well at the best of times , racing mind catches up I have decorated my whole house in one night in my mind before 🤣 diet changes mindset really help , although I have to say it never just disappears, I find once I came to terms with who I am I managed a lot better  , a misconception is for many to change , that means to heal but that's not always the case , understanding and finding your coping mechanisms are vital tools , it's more productive to find that because there is no failure then no pressure to become something else , it's ok to be sad it's ok to not sleep , it's ok to worry , just try to see it has a journey not a task 🤗

      I agree there I've tryed this myself to prove I can't eat gluten or lactose and it sets me back for about a month till I have to go back to being very strict to settle again
