Hey guys still waiting for my blood test to come back about glutten and other things i am intolerant to. I have been staying away from Glutten i have checked every label and have been very good about it. Last night i ate: Safeway Mint Chocolate Chip ice cream, and Ruffles Sour Cream and onion chips, some Lays cheddar just Barqs Rootbeer, and Trader Joe's mini chicken Tacos. (Checked this again and they are glutten free as is everything else. Open Original Shared Link Did have Salsa on them Pace but check that to. What else could it be? I know almost everything i had has corn in it but i thought it was wheat not corn. I have tried to switch to Soy but my Body hates it and stomich gets upset bad when i drink it. What are you guys thinking? I am at a loss here. Symptoms today and early morning were: Upset Stomich, Sore throat, (Thought got better latter) Felt like a lot of pressure in lower abdominal area, Multiple trip to the bathroom (number 2) and its not the right color very very light brown and just wired.

Also one day i had to go home from work (Frinkin again!) because my stomich pain was so bad i couldn't stand up anymore. It hurt so bad i had to sit down even then, and that day i was very sick with bathroom time.

Please need some input. Thanks, Brian

Brian,

I am going to assume you are new to the diet. It is best to eat very SIMPLY in the beginning. My first advice to you would be to cut out all processed foods. Your gut is mangled inside and needs to heal. The more junk you put in it, the more reactions you will have.

I have been gluten-free for 3 months plus. In the beginning, I didn't know any better, and just ate whatever I wanted, as long as it was gluten-free. Turns out there are so many things that your system just can't tolerate in the beginning, ESPECIALLY processed foods.

Before going gluten-free, I ate anything and everything. After, I had a problem with all grains, corn, dairy, nut butters and lettuce, broccoli, cauliflower. All of these things gave me terrible stomach pains, gas, bloating etc. Now, I am eating pretty clean- lean proteins, veggies and fruit, along with a good enzyme and probiotic. I've been able to add in a little dairy here and there, and small amounts of peanut butter with no ill effect. I had a gluten free hot dog two weeks ago, and am still bloated  Go with natural foods, with few additives, just to get your system straightened out, and I promise you will feel better!

wow thanks what is your opinion on drinking vodka or glutten free beer? What are goo portable basic foods on the run? Work so many hours and always at work. Bannanas give me a sore throat, apples ok? I have been eAting costco trail mix and knd bars also.

Oh SNAP, well big bo bo. I switched Vodkla from Sky (I know gluten free) to svedka vodka (Cheaper and better) I just assumed (My fault) that it also was made from potatos. WRONG i just thought about it now and its made from 100% GRAIN/Wheat... No wonder i felt kinda bad or horrible the next day even if i had very little...

A couple of things; the ice cream has chocolate chips and those probably have soy lecithin in them. Most chocolate does. You said you are sensitive to soy. Also the Lays chips, they are gluten-free but some of us have a problem with them. They are made in a shared facility and some cannot tolerate Lays products. (Stax are made in a dedicated facility.) I can eat them 10 times with no problem then on the 11th time, I'll have a reaction.

Hope this is helpful to you. Soy is a tricky one to watch for, I understand. But you'll feel better if you do.

I am staying away from alcohol just to be safe. As far as portable snacks go, I like Kind Bars-minimal ingredients. Whole Foods has some raw food bars that are very tasty. Look in their raw section. I also like Jif on the go- portable peanut butter snacks. Grapes, pears, carrots, string cheese- all can be packaged in little snack bags.

Read EVERY label to make sure what you are eating is safe:)

Do you guys think I should cut out soy to? Like I said I can't drink it, then I can't imangine eating it would be any different. Just did a test right now And ate gluten free pancakes BUT they have soy flour. Now my stomich is making very wired noises. I don't want to know what happpends next. :( then I just remembered trader joes tocos have are fryed in soybean oil. The next day I got sick from those. Did have salsa on them Pace but label was fine can this have to do with anything?

It has to be something else I am allergic to either soy or corn. Time for another experament with somthing with corn and no soy. Stupid usps lost blood results test, have to wait for replacment. *sigh*

I could be totally off in left field or could of missed something but have you thought about maybe dairy is giving you a problem. About 4 months into being gluten free I was still having problems and it was due to dairy. My problems were very similar to yours. As a matter of fact my son get strep throat when he drinks milk. Just a thought.

now that you said somthing about this I do get sore throats usally with cereal in the morning, not all but many. Maybe I will try milk first over soy. I did eat ice cream last night and felt sick in the morning.

I hope you don't think I'm rude, but what you ate doesn't sound very nutritious for someone who is so sick. Celiac is a very serious disease - life threatening.

I would suggest more nutritious foods.

Celiacs do not tolerate carbs very well.

Protein is easily digested. Cabs are not. Eat fresh fruits, veggies, eggs, fresh meat and yogurt (if you can tolerate it).

Avoid processed food until you are symptom free. Then have at it, but until then keep it simple.

I hope you start feeling better and are healed.

ang1e0251 is right...Lays chips are like plaing roulette with a hand gun! Most of the time they are safe and then boom!...you got a bag that is cross contaminated from the lines they were made on. Also, chocolate chips used in ice cream is usually a gluten "no no" becuase flower is used on the lines for anti sticking purposes. It's all very confusing I know:( but as time goes on it will get easier. Everyone is right to about the type of food you eat when first diagnosed needs to be simple, basic, fresh, and light. Stay away from ALL processed foods unless it says gluten-free on the package. Good luck!

Update: tested milk theory today and had eggs and some cheese. Felt fine until a litle after it feels like I drank acid so sore. I am now also staying away from milk now also. I cannot always run to bathroom or work like a old man

You may find after you have been off soy and dairy long enough you will be able to eat them. Once the intestines heal some people add them back into their diet. I believe most people are saying stay off dairy and soy 6 months to a year. I was off dairy for 6 months before adding it back without problems. It's will worth the healing time.

A company cannot add flour to any food without declaring it on the ingredients label as WHEAT. However the OP said that he is sensitive to soy and chocolate commonly does have soy lecithen added.

I didn’t know there were different types of CT. I’m not sure which I had. It just said CT scan with contrast.

I had the same thing happen to me at around your age, and to this day it's the most painful experience I've ever had. For me it was the right side of my head, above my ear, running from my nerves in my neck. For years before my outbreak I felt a tingling sensation shooting along the exact nerves that ended up exactly where the shingles blisters appeared. I highly recommend the two shot shingles vaccine as soon as your turn 50--I did this because I started to get the same tingling sensations in the same area, and after the vaccines I've never felt that again.  As you likely know, shingles is caused by chicken pox, which was once though of as one of those harmless childhood viruses that everyone should catch in the wild--little did they know that it can stay in your nervous system for your entire life, and cause major issues as you age.

Thanks for the info. I recently moved to CA from Wyoming and in that western region the Costco and Sam's /Walmart Brands have many nuts and more products that are labeled gluten free. I was told it's because those products are packaged and processed  in different  plants. Some plants can be labeled  gluten free because the plant does not also package gluten products and they know that for example the trucks, containers equipment are not used to handle wheat, barely or Rye. The Walmart butter in the western region says gluten free but not here. Most of The Kirkland and Members Mark brands in CA say they are from Vietnam. That's not the case in Wyoming and Colorado. I've spoken to customer service at the stores here in California. They were not helpful. I check labels every time I go to the store. The stores where I am are a Sh*tshow. The Magalopoly grocery chain Vons/Safeway/Albertsons, etc. are the same. Fishers and Planters brands no longer say gluten free. It could be regional. There are nuts with sugar coatings and fruit and nut mixes at the big chains that are labeled gluten free but I don't want the fruit or sugar.  It's so difficult I am considering moving again. I thought it would be easier to find safe food in a more populated area. It's actually worse.  I was undiagnosed for most of my life but not because I didn't try to figure it out. So I have had all the complications possible. I don't have any spare organs left.  No a little gluten will hurt you. The autoimmune process continues to destroy your organs though you may not feel it. If you are getting a little all the time and as much as we try we probably all are and so the damage is happening. Now the FDA has pretty much abandoned celiacs. There are no requirements for labeling for common allergens on medications. All the generic drugs made outside the US are not regulated for common allergens and the FDA is taking the last gluten free porcine Thyroid med, NP Thyroid, off the market in 2026. I was being glutened by a generic levothyroxin. The insurance wouldn't pay for the gluten free brand any longer because the FDA took them all off their approved formulary. So now I am paying $147 out of pocket for NP Thyroid but shortly I will have no safe choice. Other people with allergies should be aware that these foreign generic pharmaceutical producers are using ground shellfish shell as pill coatings and anti-desicants. The FDA knows this but  now just waits for consumers to complain or die. The take over of Wholefoods by Amazon destroyed a very reliable source of good high quality food for people with allergies and for people who wanted good reliably organic food. Bezos thought  he could make a fortune off people who were paying alot for organic and allergen free food by substituting cheap brands from Thailand. He didn't understand who the customers were who were willing to pay more for that food and why. I went from spending hundreds to nothing because Bezo removed every single trusted brand that I was buying. Now they are closing Whole foods stores across the country. In CA, Mill Valley store (closed July 2025) and the National Blvd. store in West Los Angeles (closed October 2025). The Cupertino store will close.  In recent years I have learned to be careful and trust no one. I have been deleberately glutened in a restaurant that was my favorite (a new employee). The Chef owner was not in the kitchen that night. I've had  a metal scouring pad cut up over my food. The chain offered gluten free dishes but it only takes one crazy who thinks you're a problem as a food fadist. Good thing I always look. Good thing they didn't do that to food going to a child with a busy mom.  I give big tips and apologize for having to ask in restaurants but mental illness seem to be rampant. I've learn the hard way.          I don't buy any processed food that doesn't say gluten free.  I am a life long Catholic. I worked for the Church while at college. I don't go to Church anymore because the men at the top decided Jesus is gluten. The special hosts are gluten less not gluten free. No I can't drink wine after people with gluten in their mouth and a variety of deadly germs. I have been abandoned and excluded by my Church/Family.  Having nearly died several times, safe food is paramount. If your immune system collapses as mine did, you get sepsis. It can kill you very quickly. I spent 5 days unconscious and had to have my appendix and gall bladder removed because they were necrotic. I was 25. They didn't figure out I had celiac till I was 53. No one will take the time to tell you what can happen when your immune system gets overwhelmed from its constant fighting the gluten and just stops. It is miserable that our food is processed so carelessly. Our food in many aspects is not safe. And the merging of all the grocery chains has made it far worse. Its a disaster. Krogers also recently purchased Vitacost where I was getting the products I could no longer get at Whole Foods. Kroger is eliminating those products from Vitacost just a Bezos did from WF. I am looking for reliable and certified sources for nuts. I have lived the worst consequences of the disease and being exposed unknowingly and maliciously. Once I was diagnosed I learned way more than anyone should have to about the food industry.  I don't do gray areas. And now I dont eat out except very rarely.  I have not eaten fast food for 30 years before the celiac diagnosis. Gluten aside..... It's not food and it's not safe.  No one has got our backs. Sharing safe food sources is one thing we can do to try to be safe.
