hello all. I was just diagnosed about a month ago and besides celiacs i have terrible allergies. I was taking Walgreen brand of Zyrtec Walzyr and it worked great as a daily med. But unfortunatly it was not gluten-free. Now i need another otc allergy med. I know Zyrtec is gluten-free but its so expensive. Is there another store brand that is known to be gluten-free?

If you have a Wegmans near you give them a call at 1-800-WEGMANS. They will tell you whether their store brand is safe they are really good at giving answers about that as they are really celiac savvy. Sometimes it may take a return call but they will get back to you if they don't have the answer on hand.

Where did you get the info that the Walgreen brand of "Zyrtec" isn't gluten free? Any gluten info on the RiteAid brand?

I've been using Zyrtec for a long time, and the Kirkland brand (Costco) works fine for me also (no reactions). However, I had pretty bad "gluten" symptoms when I used the brand sold by RiteAid. I've been meaning to make some calls to the mfr, but haven't yet.

Walgreens pubishes a list of their gluten-free meds. Walzyr wasnt on it. Zyrtec as in the actual otc brand is fine. But my pharmacist told me alot of the store brands use gluten as a filler or binder. Could be she was mistaken but after being gluten-free for several weeks i was still having diarreah every day. I was told about the walzyr and omitted it and got better within a few days. Not sure about riteaid i am researching the meds now to see if i can find a cheaper alternative to buying the Zyrtec brand its very pricey.

Singulair is apparently gluten-free. I've been taking it for a year or so and though it's expensive it seems to work.

I use Benadryl, it's gluten-free and I never had a problem with it.

      Is there a digestive enzyme that helps build a healthier gut? I see people taking them but not sure what really works

      So the tTG-IGA at 28 is positive for celiac disease. There are some other medical conditions that can cause elevated tTG-IGA but this is unlikely. There are some people for whom the dairy protein casein can cause this but by far the most likely cause is celiac disease. Especially when your small bowel lining is "scalloped".       hi, i want to say thank you to you and @trents . after 2 phone calls to my GI, her office called me back to tell me that a blood test was “unnecessary” and that we should “follow the gold standard” and since my biopsy did not indicate celiac, to follow the no dairy and sucraid diet. i luckily have expendable income and made an appt for the labcorp blood t...

      Thoughts? Non-endoscopic Celiac diagnosis in two year old

      Okay that is really good to know. So with that being positive and the other being high it makes sense she diagnosed her even without the endoscopy. So glad we caught it early. She had so many symptoms though that to me it was clear something was wrong. yeah I think we had better test us and the other kids as well.

      So the tTG-IGA at 28 is positive for celiac disease. There are some other medical conditions that can cause elevated tTG-IGA but this is unlikely. There are some people for whom the dairy protein casein can cause this but by far the most likely cause is celiac disease. Especially when your small bowel lining is "scalloped". Your Serum IGA 01 (aka, "total IGA") at 245 mg/dl is within normal range, indicating you are not IGA deficient. But I also think it would be wise to take your doctor's advice about the sucraid diet and avoiding dairy . . . at least until you experience healing and your gut has had a chance to heal, which can take around two years. After that, you can experiment with adding dairy back in and monitor symptoms. By the way, if you want the protein afforded by dairy but need to avoid casein, you can do so with whey protein powder. Whey is the other major protein in dairy.

Studies have demonstrated that endomysial IgA antibodies have over 99% specificity for gluten sensitive enteropathy. Immunoglobulin A, Qn, Serum 01 245 mg/dL 87-352
