Accidental Christmas Glutening

My mother, bless her heart, tried so hard to prodive a gluten- free Christmas meal for me. She bought a gluten-free corn bread mix, but then sprayed the pan with a flour-based spray, and didn't tell me, until after I had eaten it. Is there anything I can do to purge the gluten out so I can start to feel better? I feel like I want to puke but I can't. I'm also feeling a groggy brain fog, so forgive me if my post doesn't make any sense.

Also, hubby and I have been trying to concieve, and I just got my first period in several months, after diligently following the diet. I really think that my fertility is linked with gluten. Do you think this is going to set us back a couple of months TTC? Or maybe just this cycle is shot? I'm just feeling really dumpy after being glutened, and being around lots of kiddos at the holidays that remind me of my childless state.

The only thing that will help is time. I wish we had something that would help when we get glutened but it doesn't seem that much helps. We just have to wait out the antibody attack. You could try some sublingual B12 to see if that helps the brain fog clear a bit. If you are having bad stomach pain for some of us Pepto Bismal liquid helps.

I am glad to hear you are getting your period again. The one slip up shouldn't take you back to square one. Hopefully by this time next year you will be either holding a baby outside or in. I know how hard it is but try to relax. I was still on gluten when my kids were born but I had to wait out almost 10 years for my first. He was quite a surprise as I had given up by then. Hopefully your joyous surprise will come soon.

I'm totally feeling your pain - literally. My mother supposedly cooked gluten-free - wouldn't let me bring a thing to Christmas dinner - and within 2 hours I knew I had experienced my first full glutening since I went gluten-free for good in September. Sigh. Bloating, back and abdominal pain, gas, even itchy eyes (I didn't realize that could even be related until I saw it when I re-read a book on celiac's while I was feeling sorry for myself yesterday.)

Anyway, later on Christmas day I made chicken soup with a lot of broth, ate blandly, drank fluids, took my vitamins, rested, and warned my husband and kids that if I get really crabby it may be because I was feeling bad.

Yesterday (the day after) I sat around and read and napped much of the day - I was so fatigued. My fatigue is a little better today, but I've still been taking it easy.

I haven't read anything official of how to 'purge' gluten from your body. I figure the best thing is to not let it get you down, take care of the symptoms, and to take it easy.

I'm now in the post or tween holiday gathering mode. Today I was at a family gathering with meatballs (assumed gluten), salad with gluten dressing, and luncheon/supermarket deli meat. Help me please.... How do I know if deli meat is OK or not?

Have faith, you will survive. I get mine from Pipingrock.com.  500 capsules of 10,000 IU for $22.  That is almost two years worth for me.  250 caps 5000 IU for $6.69 if you only take 5,000 a day.  It's like half the price of Walmart.

Testing can't alone be trusted.  Else why would it take so many years of testing and retesting and misdiagnosis to finally be told, yes you have Celiac Disease. As to what to eat, I like pre 1950 style food.  Before the advent of TV dinners.  Fresh food is better for you, and cooking from scratch is cheaper.  Watch Rachel Ray's 30 Minute Meals for how to cook.  Keep in mind that she is not gluten free, but her techniques are awesome.  Just use something else instead of wheat, barley, rye. Dr Fuhrman is a ex cardiologist.  His book Eat to Live and Dr Davis' book Wheatbelly were instrumental in my survival.

If you have DH you will likely also want to avoid iodine, which is common in seafoods and dairy products, as it can exacerbate symptoms in some people. This article may also be helpful as it offers various ways to relieve the itch--thanks for the tip about Dupixent, and I've added it to the article:

I just want to clarify that what I posted is a category of research summaries we've done over the years, and nearly each one shows that there is definitely a connection to celiac disease and migraine headaches. The latest study said: "the study did indicate some potential causal associations between celiac disease and migraine with or without aura, as well as between migraine without aura and ulcerative colitis...this study did not find evidence of a shared genetic basis..." Anyway, there is definitely a connection, and you can go through more of the articles here if you're interested: https://www.celiac.com/celiac-disease/celiac-disease-amp-related-diseases-and-disorders/migraine-headaches-and-celiac-disease/

Two months ago, I started taking Dupixent for dermatitis herpetiformis and it has completely cleared it up. I can't believe it! I have had a terrible painful, intensely itchy rash for over a year despite going fully gluten-free. See if your doctor will prescribe Dupixent. It can be expensive but I am getting it free. When the dermatitis herpetiformis was bad I could not do anything. I just lay in bed covered in ice packs to ease the pain/itching and using way too Clobetasol. Dapsone is also very good for dermatitis herpetiformis (and it is generic). It helped me and the results were immediate but it gave me severe anemia so the Dupixent is better for me. Not sure if it works for everyone. I cannot help with the cause of your stress but from experience I am sure the severe stress is making the celiac and dermatitis herpetiformis worse. Very difficult for you with having children to care for and you being so sick. Would this man be willing to see a family therapist with you? He may be angry at you or imagine that your illness is a psychosomatic excuse not to take care of him. A therapist might help even if he won't go with you. Also do you have any family that you could move in with (with the kids) for a short time to get away? A break may be good for you both.
