Kona Grill Questions

Kona Grill has a gluten free menu, but to my surprise, no sushi or sashimi was listed. They have gluten-free soy sauce, what could be glutinous with the sushi or slabs of raw fish? Does anyone know? The staff were unable to answer my questions.

BEing in Kona -- I had no idea this chain existed until I looked on the net.

Sometimes the seaweed can be processed with soy sauce, especially cheaper ones often made outside of Japan. If your sure the table soy sauce is gluten-free then you should have no trouble unless they buy pre-made rice. Many rice balls, onigiri in Japan, have wheat starch in them. Plain fish and gluten-free soy sauce is fine.

No Kona Grill in Kona!

I actually asked about it last time I was there. None of the rolls are safe, but the simple, plain sashimi without any sauce is fine.

I spoke with the manager at my local Kona Grill (Lincolnshire, IL), they are reworking their gluten-free menu and hope to have a new one published soon. She told me I could have the sushi there, the rice was steamed non-instant and they do have the Tamari gluten-free soy sauce. She said no crab or sauces but all the fish and veggie rolls were fine, they would make anything non-marinated gluten free for me. Their Salmon and Tuna are AWESOME!

I think it depends on the managers there, mine is VERY accommodating but it is good to check. With sushi in general I have had alot of luck! Ask if their rice is non-instant or wheat free, avoid crab, and any sauces. I love the veggie rolls myself, cucumber and avocado (sometimes with tuna), sometimes if their sushi rolls have instant rice they have non-instant steamed rice they can use instead.

Hope this helps!!

Thats great to know since I have to go to Lincolnshire in June -- is that marriott & dinner theater place still there?

I'm very confused... My blood test came out negative, I checked all antibodies. I suppose my Total IgA levels are normal (132 mg/dl), so the test should be reliable. Still, I'm not relieved as I can't tolerate even a single biscuit. I need to talk to my doctor about whether a duodenal biopsy is necessary. But it is really possible to have intestinal damage despite having a seronegative results? I have really strong symptoms, and I don't want to keep skipping university lectures or being bedridden at home.

They may want to also eliminate other possible causes for your symptoms/issues and are doing additional tests.  Here is info about blood tests for celiac disease--if positive an endoscopy where biopsies of your intestinal villi are taken to confirm is the typical follow up.

In the Europe the new protocol for making a celiac disease diagnosis in children is if their tTg-IgA (tissue transglutaminase IgA) levels are 10 times or above the positive level for celiac disease--and you are above that level. According to the latest research, if the blood test results are at certain high levels that range between 5-10 times the reference range for a positive celiac disease diagnosis, it may not be necessary to confirm the results using an endoscopy/biopsy: Blood Test Alone Can Diagnose Celiac Disease in Most Children and Adults TGA-IgA at or Above Five Times Normal Limit in Kids Indicates Celiac Disease in Nearly All Cases No More Biopsies to Diagnose Celiac Disease in Children! May I ask why you've had so many past tTg-IgA tests done, and many of them seem to have been done 3 times during short time intervals?

@JettaGirl, "Coeliac" is the British spelling of "celiac". Same disease.

This may sound ridiculous but is this supposed to say Celiacs? I looked up Coeliacs because you never know, there’s a lot of diseases related to a disease that they come up with similar names for. It’s probably meant to say Celiacs but I just wanted to confirm.
