has anyone heard of being tested for celiac disease in a colonoscopy?

I don't think this would work very well because it wouldn't go up high enough would it?

The damage with celiac is in the small intestine which is higher up. The colonoscopy only covers the large intestine(colons)

Don't know alot about this area so I could be wrong...someone else may know better but that's my opinion on it :D

My doctor also mentioned colonoscopy when I asked him about celiac, and it made me think he was crazy. Maybe they were both referring to ruling out other things with colonoscopy. Colonoscopy in itself cannot diagnose celiac. You should get the celic blood tests first, and if those are positive, your doc (you may want to go see a gastroenterologist as we are not sure if yours really knows what celiac is) may want an endoscopy to make final diagnosis. I had pos. bloodwork and am currently impatiently awaiting further tests while I continue to blow up like a baloon on gluten (I busting out of my STRETCH jeans today!)

Most GI Docs recommend an Endoscopy and Colonoscopy as a routine workup on patients who are being seen for any digestive problems. First of all it is a base line to compare to like your first mammogram, first EKG, etc. Another reason for doing Colonoscopy on everyone is because it is a good screening tool for Cancer, many types of Cancers have been prevented because of early detection of polyps which can turn precancerous or even malignant. Another reason is that our symptoms can be common in other diseases such as Chron's, Colitis, etc. All of those things have to be ruled out. Everyone should be "scoped", IMHO. I didn't want to go through all of it, but now I'm glad I did. ;)

thanks for your comments. my gi doc is doing the colonoscopy next week. i've had the endoscopy (negative) and the blood work (negative), but i have two endos who think i'm celiac with all my symptoms; one says the labs aren't 100% fool proof and the other endo said my gi doc needs to biopsy the colon too (i wasn't sure if that's routine in diagnosing a celiac or not). they're also looking for chron's or colitis, so who knows...i just know gluten and dairy make me feel horrible and make it impossible to gain weight (i have women who say they wish they had that problem and i always say they'd end up spending half their lives in the bathroom!). :P

Hello, I was very stick,  with flu like symptoms, but my virus panel came back negative and we couldn’t figure out what’s going on. The doctor then added a celiac panel.  Has anyone ever had such a dramatic change?  What are the odds this is true celiac I am going to have an endoscopy, but it’s expensive and I just feel like why can’t the labs be enough?

Eating out in general is full of risks, but this article may help:

This kind of question is always difficult to give a definitive answer to because of so many variables. One such variable is the sensitivity of the individual celiac to small amounts of gluten cross contamination. An amount that causes a reaction in one celiac many not in another, or at least not be discernable which, of course, does not exactly equate to being "safe".

I don't live in the US, but based on this thread, I wouldn't risk it:   https://www.reddit.com/r/glutenfree/comments/1n2ehw8/cracker_barrel/   This app is helpful: https://www.findmeglutenfree.com/

I see that Cracker Barrel restaurants have a gluten free menu (not all locations, but one confirmed that they do). I was wondering if it is safe for my 5 year old son with celiac disease?
