Dq2/dq8 Results

So I finally got my results for dq2/dq8 and they were negative...

My question is, is that conclusive? Or can those be negative and someone still have celiac?

I'd been off gluten for a couple months before the test, can that affect this test?

One last thing, can you not have celiac and just be gluten intolerant?

Any info is appreciated

Thanks,

Jorden

Negative on the genetic test means you do not show the known markers predisposing you to celiac disease. However there are a couple people on the boards here who have celiac disease or Gluten intolerance (or have family members that do) who also did not show any of the known markers. While this would indicate you probably have a reduced risk, there are still many unknown genetic and environmental factors leading to the development of celiac disease.

Being off gluten will not affect the genetic test.

You can most certainly be gluten intolerant and not have celiac disease. My boss doesn't have celiac disease but he is severely gluten intolerant. He develops such joint pain that he has had to call in sick from accidental ingestion of a couple of bites of mole sauce made with flour instead of cornstarch.,

There are a few people here that are diagnosed celiacs with other genes,

another one was mistyped as not having DQ8 when she had DQ8 after all, and some half genes are around too.

Also, some DQ2,2 have been posting here.

Most of these with other genes have a hard time getting diagnosed, but some do get a diagnosis.

All in all, you cannot use the gene test to exclude celiac.

You can't use the gene tests as a conclusive yes you have it or no you don't and never will. I am a firmly diagnosed celiac without either DQ2 or DQ8, I have a double DQ9. IMHO it makes no difference if you are celiac or 'gluten intolerant' if your body is reacting to gluten you need to be just as strict with either label.

I think folks who aren't DQ2/DQ8 should make sure their doctors rule out other conditions like inflammatory bowel disease or Crohn's. (Well, really everyone should but without DQ2 or DQ8 the risk of IBD and celiac is similar.) You can absolutely be celiac or gluten intolerant with other HLA-DQ genes but it's less common than with DQ2 or DQ8.

I am double DQ5 and Hadjivassiliou found that 20% of his gluten ataxia patients are DQ1 (DQ5 and DQ6 are DQ1)

There are even three forums for people like that so it is not so uncommon. (the DQ1 gluten thing. Also, they are way way more sensitive to small amounts of gluten than the DQ2 people)

BTW, we've done other articles on this topic that I wanted to share here (not to condone smoking!):

Hi everyone  This has been a crazy year so far... How many people actually get entire sensory overload from gluten or something similar ?  My jaw is going nuts ..and that nerve is affecting my upper back and so on ...  Bones even hurt.  Brain fog. Etc  I had eggs seemed fine.   Then my aid cooked a chicken stir fry in the microwave because my food order shorted a couple key items .   I was so hungry but I noticed light breading and some ingredients with SOY !!! Why are we suffering with soy ? This triggered a sensitivity to bananas and gluten-free yogurt it seems like it's a cycle that it goes on.  The tiniest amount of something gets me I'm guessing the tiny bit of breading that I took one tiny nibble of ...yikes ..im cringing from it .. Feels like my stomach is going to explode yet still very hungry 😔  How long does this last?! Thank you so much

This is an older article, but may be helpful.

I have had orthodontic work done. The 3M invisalign material was no problem. BUT my retainers are another matter. They seemed okay for a few months. Now, however, they cause a burning sensation on my tongue, gums and insides of my lips. The burning sensation is now spreading to my throat. I notice it when I breathe. This is annoying and interferes with my enjoyment of eating. I am visiting with my provider tomorrow. We'll see where this goes from here.

Exactly which blood tests were done? There are a few different ones and some docs don't do them all. Also, your results and reference ranges for each?
