Gluten-Free 2 Weeks And Counting

Marz

Marz Enthusiast

Wow, so I'm finally feeling great. It's kinda been only gluten-free for 1 week, because I did 1 week free, challenged with some gluten, and then another week free.

It's so weird what foods I'm reacting to now! It looks like dairy is actually ok! I thought it was a problem because I kept getting nauseous in the afternoons. Turned out *that* was the green pepper I was having with my "healthy" salad at lunch! I also get nausea from potatoes, so I'm avoiding the nightshade family for a few weeks.

Seems like corn is ok, had some maize porrige this morning - so much better than rice for breakfast!

And finally... soy... It seems that soy doesn't agree with me at all. In small amounts it seems ok, but just had some soy milk and about ready to throw up. Oh, and I was having a maize cereal for breakfast for a while - Pronutro - it's a blend of maize and soy. I always had a sore stomach afterwards, and wondered if it was the maize. Now I know... it's soy!

So I'm still not 100% sure if I'm gluten intolerant, for all I know I have had a leaky gut-type reaction, which has made me intolerant to certain foods, and maybe cutting out egg is really the thing that's stabilised my stomach. Will challenge with gluten in a week's time when I'm over my soy poisoning, and see how I feel!

Thanks for all the advise and support, guys - I'd never have tried doing an elimination diet like this without your encouragement!

I'm so glad to hear you are feeling better and making progress! When you challenge with gluten again be sure to try it with something that doesn't contain soy or other possible problem foods.

Glad to hear you're feeling good! I hope you sort out the diet issues without too much confusion. It can be so hard to track down things like soy!

I would wait at least two weeks after you are feeling better to do a gluten challenge. When you do it is best to do it with something like cream of wheat or triscuits or something that has just gluten. Eat the food you are challenging for at least a week before you assume you have no issues with it as reactions can be delayed.

Congrats on feeling better, Marz! I'm glad you're finding out what you can and can't eat. :)

Desperately need a vitamin D supplement. I've reacted to most brands I've tried.

How do I contact someone at celiac.com concerning the cessation of my weekly e-newsletter? I had been receiving it regularly for years. When I tried to sign-up on the website, my email was not accepted. I tried again with a new email address and that was rejected as well. Thank you in advance!

Hello, @Jane02,  I take Naturewise D 3.  It contains olive oil.   Some Vitamin D supplements, like D Drops, are made with fractionated coconut oil which can cause digestive upsets.  Fractionated coconut oil is not the same as coconut oil used for cooking.  Fractionated coconut oil has been treated for longer shelf life, so it won't go bad in the jar, and thus may be irritating to the digestive system. I avoid supplements made with soy because many people with Celiac Disease also react to soy.  Mixed tocopherols, an ingredient in Thornes Vitamin D, may be sourced from soy oil.  Kirkland's has soy on its ingredient list. I avoid things that might contain or be exposed to crustaceans, like Metagenics says on its label.  I have a crustacean/shellfish/fish allergy.  I like Life Extension Bioactive Complete B Complex.  I take additional Thiamine B 1 in the form Benfotiamine which helps the intestines heal, Life Extension MegaBenfotiamine. Thiamine is needed to activate Vitamin D.   Low thiamine can make one feel like they are getting glutened after a meal containing lots of simple carbohydrates like white rice, or processed gluten free foods like cookies and pasta.   It's rare to have a single vitamin deficiency.  The water soluble B Complex vitamins should be supplemented together with additional Thiamine in the form Benfotiamine and Thiamine TTFD (tetrahydrofurfuryl disulfide) to correct subclinical deficiencies that don't show up on blood tests.  These are subclinical deficiencies within organs and tissues.  Blood is a transportation system.  The body will deplete tissues and organs in order to keep a supply of thiamine in the bloodstream going to the brain and heart.   If you're low in Vitamin D, you may well be low in other fat soluble vitamins like Vitamin A and Vitamin K. Have you seen a dietician?

I do not know this, but since they are labelled gluten-free, and are not really a product that could easily be contaminated when making them (there would be not flour in the air of such a facility, for example), I don't really see contamination as something to be concerned about for this type of product.

Thanks @Scott Adams. Do you know if Kirkland Signature supplements share facility and production lines with other products containing gluten?  I'm worried that I'll react to this brand just like I did with other gluten-free labelled supplement brands.
