So, on another thread there were some of us talking about the lack of our GI symptoms resolving after going gluten-free. And, by not resolving, I mean mine are significantly worse. Just call me gas-a-saurus rex. One member (T.H.) suggested fructose issues, but I didn't want to believe that since I've eliminated so many things already.

However, they were on to something. Did some research and it appears fructose could be a problem for me. I'm on day 2 of a no fructose diet to see if that is indeed the issue and wouldn't you know it...no gas.

So, for any of you fructose malabsorbers...Who has gotten tested? I think a hydrogen breath test is used? Are the results reliable? Do you have to be eating your normal high fructose diet for a positive result? Does it cause any real issues other than upset intestines? Oh and what about chewing gum since they all contain sorbitol. Any suggestions on good, minty chewing gum?

Maybe I can reintroduce eggs in a few days because I eliminated them thinking they were the source of my gas. Eggs...you were dearly missed ;)

I had the hydrogen test done and was surprised it came back negative for fructmal due to how well I'm doing on the FODMAP diet. As soon as I have onions, garlic, fruit from the 'no' column or too many tomatoes I'm gassy and sick again. I was positive for SIBO and just finished a round of antibiotics so I'm sure I'm feeling better in that regard too. I started FODMAP before the breath test. My dietitian said it wouldn't effect the outcome but I do wonder. I think the true test is the diet. If you remove things and feel better that's a sign. If you introduce them back in and you have issues that's even more signs. I'm planning on staying on the FODMAP diet since it's the first time in 5+ years I've felt like myself.

Oddly enough, my teeth never felt cleaner. They feel like I've gone to the dentist everyday.

Gosh, I'm so glad you mentioned toothpaste! I never even considered it was in toothpaste. Any other items I should be looking out for?

I just sent my GI an email about testing for fructose issues, so I'll probably know by tomorrow what he wants to do. But, I do agree with you that it comes down to eliminating the food, and/or reintroducing it to know how well you really tolerate it!

The only other thing I can think of is meds, like cold meds specifically. I wasn't feeling well this week and was about to take an Airborn when I noticed it contained sorbitol. I suppose I should find a sorbitol free cold med for future use but right now I'm too sick to do anything involving brain cells. I've also notices some of my lip balm/gloss with sorbitol. I just chucked a few from my collection. It may not matter but I figure I rather be safe than sorry.

      What are your daily meals? Guilty pleasure snacks? Protein bars? I feel when looking for gluten free foods they are filled with sugar cholesterol. Looking for healthy gluten-free protein bars. Something to fill since sometimes I feel like not to eat anything. Especially if on vacation and unsure of cross contamination I figure go with a salad and protein bar to fill and play it safe.

      Unfortunately, there is presently no test for NCGS. Celiac disease must first be ruled out. NCGS is thought to be much more common than celiac disease. We know that celiac disease is an autoimmune disorder but the mechanism of NCGS is less clear. Both call for an elimination of gluten from the diet.

      Thanks for your reply Trents…most appreciated.  I am unfamiliar with celiac labs terminology so I wanted to know if the presence of HLA variants (DA:101, DA:105, DQB1:0301 and DQB1:0501) that the labs detected had any merit in predisposing one to be more sensitive to gluten/carbs than the general population?  Also,  I found what you said about NCGS very interesting and I appreciate you mentioning that.  I’ve worked hard to research and advocate for myself with my Hematologist and now with a new GI, since my bowel surgery and to maintain my Vitamin B12 health concurrent with keeping my levels of Iron in the optimal range. I’ve been tested for SIBO (do not have it), biopsy showed negative for HPylori, and have had Fecal studies done (nothing showed up) and I understand how a loss of a large amount of bowel could be highly impacting re: SIBO, malabsorption and motility issues. So I’ve managed pretty well diet and elimination-wise until just recently. That said, this new problem with extreme bloating, distention and upper girth, NAFLD just occured over the last 4 months so it is new for me and I thought celiac might be a possible issue. I’ll probably just continue on in this less gluten/carbs seem to be better for me and see how reintroducing certain foods go.  Thanks again.

      Thanks bumped it up and now take all 3 vitamins 2 capsules each with the super b complex at breakfast. I will give it some time to see if I notice a difference. I am going to track my eating daily diary on a myfitness pal app to see if the "claimed" gluten free foods bother me or not.

      Please can anyone help. I was diagnosed on 23rd December and I am trying my best to get my head around all the things to look out for. I have read that yeast extract is not to be eaten by coeliacs. Why? And is this all yeast extract. Or is this information wrong. Thanks.
