So Maybe It Was Gluten After All...

I saw my doctor today and he wasn't too concerned when I told him my symptoms and compared them to my glutening symptoms. I had been worried about pain and inflammation in the region of my pancreas, but he pointed out that it follows along the line of the large intestine. He wanted to order a stool sample just in case, but since the D stopped yesterday morning he just sent me home with a kit and the request that the containers find their way, full, to the lab in less than 72 hours before the solutions expire (easier said than done as I am now back on campus 100 miles away). So the theory is: It probably started with gluten consumption, somewhere/sometime last week, and was exasperated by a small bug picked up in the same place. The resulting D could have caused even more inflammation throughout my digestive tract, even to the point of colitis.

So his orders are to take it easy for a few days (the same fluids and simple foods that come after a glutening- emphasis on the white rice and applesauce) and wait it out. Whether it's minor virus or gluten, it should improve in the next few days. It would be nice to know what kind of bug it was though... Too bad I am now experiencing C and will not likely be able to return his specimen cups in the next few days.

Now, does anyone have any special tricks to deal with this all-over gut pain??? Though I suspect the answer is "Wait it out"; just had to ask :unsure:

I am sorry that I am not familiar with your previous thread about Prilosec. But I do know that excess Prilosec can cause diarrhea (immediate diarrhea :o )when overused. It also contributed to absorption issues.

It also can be used (abused) as a weight loss technique. Bad idea! B)

I am glad to hear it doesn't seem to be anything other than a glutening. Pepto helps me with that stabbing pain that comes with my gluten symptoms, don't know if it would help you but it might be worth keeping some on hand just in case.

If you have had D that was intense for a couple days you may not have a BM for a day or so. The D can clean us out real well and sometimes we don't eat much when we are feeling ill. Your system should return to normal soon hopefully.

Glad you figured out what happened. I take Pepto Bismol when I'm uncomfortable. Tylenol helps me too, and it's easier on the stomach than aspirin or advil.

I just took some Tylenol for the gut and a developing headache (stress/tension plus the lack of protein in my diet this weekend... for some reason that always gets to me). I forgot to pick up Pepto when I was stocking up on rice, but I do have some mint tea, cinnamon gum and altoids to get me through til Wednesday when I can go pick some up. Also had to take albuterol because my chest is really tight. It's not doing much, but it's better than nothing. I'm having flashbacks to last spring when I missed almost a week of classes learning that I was gluten intolerant.

I got glutened by corn dogs on Saturday and I am still having gut all over pain but no D. Just C. And everytime I eat anything I have pain immediately following eating. Don't feel like eating, but I have to. I took some benadryl today, a half dose of children's , 12.5mg and I felt better for about four hours, the cramps completely subsided. Try that maybe if you have benadryl at home. But don't take it with those levsin undet the tongue pills for cramps. Hope that helps. I feel you pain. Wish I did't have this curse. I"m still hoping its a phase and it will go away....wishfull.

Knowing that I made it through this just a few months ago is helping some. That first time I was freaking out, worried that I was dying or something. This time I know the process and what to expect so it's all about looking at the light at the end of the tunnel. And tips from others help too :) I've never had much luck with Benadryl, but maybe I'll give it a try.

When I was still recovering my gastroenterologist suggested I bought lactofree product as I was very bloated.  So I bought some from the supermarket and from memory, I drank a nice big glass of milk - and it went right through me literally within an hour or so, if my memory serves correctly.  I came off dairy completely next and it worked like a charm, but started to reintroduce quite gradually it as I missed it! To this day, if I overdo dairy products, they work like a mild laxative.  I've never wanted to give up milk completely as I like it so much, and my mum had osteoporosis and it's an easy way of getting calcium.  But it doesn't really 'sit' well with me.   You may need to experiment a bit as when I was healing certain dairy products were worse than others - I could cope with one brand of Greek yoghurt, but I got extremely and painfully bloated with another brand of live British yoghurt.

i have been strictly gluten free for 7 months. this includes avoiding anything that may contain gluten and making sure surfaces and appliances are clean. i am 18 years old in australia and my tTG-IgA results were 69U/mL, pretty low compared to most people's, for reference. i feel the exact same as before. sure, i was pretty much asymptomatic/silent. the worst i'd get was occasionally bad stools and pitting of the nails/brittle hair since early childhood - and i was diagnosed with low iron and vitamin d which checks out due to easy bruising and such. but those symptoms have remained. maybe i'm jumping the gun, sure. i know it can take years to fully heal. but being over half a year in, i feel that i should be, y'know, healing. i'm nearly at my wits end and wondering if i should have a piece of bread or something to see how i go - to see if i possibly have refractory? my mental health is declining as i feel myself wanting to bang my head against a damn wall out of frustration every day. cravings haven't gotten better. look, i love the stuff i still can have, like salads and such. OH! i haven't lost any weight, which is mind boggling considering i eat very healthily now! i've always been on the chubbier side which is atypical of coeliac. i just don't know what's going on with me. i try to remain hopeful but i'm just so sad all the time. thanks for reading

@Charlie1946There is a PM (Personal Message) tool built into the forum website that allows you to send a private message to other forum users. Just hover over their name with your mouse cursor and the menu containing that tool will pop up. This is useful if you want to communicate with an individual without everyone else involved in the thread seeing it.  Are you realizing that in my PPI taper down recommendations in an earlier post above, I was responding not to your posts but to @Caligirl57? If you must use a PPI, I certainly would advise taking the lowest dose that is effective for you.

Hi everyone, I'm still trying to figure out how to each message individually. I saw one with some information on sebaceous hyperplasia but now I can't find it. @trents thank you! I have only been taking 20mg 1x a day. Maybe I need to increase it.
