Really Nervious - Help With Questions For My Gastro Appointment Tomorrow

I am so nervous! I posted the results of my celiac panel a few days ago. Here they are again in case some of you didn't see them:

Tissue Transglutaminase IgG AB 4 (reference range <20 units is negative, 20-30 units is weak positive and >30 is strong positive)

Tissue Transglutaminase AB IgA 10 (same reference range as above)

Gliadin Antibodies IgA 2 (same reference range as above)

Gliadin Antibodies IgG 1 (same reference range as above)

The doc didn't order a total serum IgA or the Endomysial Antibodies. Should I ask for those tests to be run? I really just want to have the endoscopy biopsy and get it diagnosed one way or the other, but it would be about $1500 out of pocket. I'd wait til we have better insurance, but I've been so sick for 3 years that I just can't wait to stop eating gluten if that is what is making me sick. I just don't know what to do! Are there any questions I should ask or tests I should ask for from those of you with more experience? Thanks in advance! I SO appreciate all the support!

Julie

Those results look negative? My results were over 100 and one test was even over 400. I suppose if I were you, I would go gluten-free to see how you feel rather than doing a biopsy since your results look very negative. I am new to this though, so someone else might have a better answer.

Good Luck!

Oh, and I had the total serum IGA test and that one was actually normal!

I don't really have anything to add - will be watching the replies for my own appt coming up, though - but I just want to say GOOD LUCK!!!!

Maybe you could ask if they'd be willing to diagnose based on the results a gluten-free trial and then a gluten challenge? I could be wrong but I think others have mentioned some will do that, if the diagnosis is important to you. They might be willing to say gluten sensitivity instead of celiac disease or something. Just a thought.

my Ttg and Antigliadin results were similar to yours. and my total Iga Serum was deficient, which means my Ttg and Antigliadin results were inaccurate.

but my Endomysial Antibodies were positive.

the total Iga serum & Endomysial Antibodies are important tests to get!

BUT- this (and biopsies)- all depend on how much gluten you've been ingesting. you dont want to go thru all that if you havent been eating enough gluten- then the tests would just be inconclusive and a waste of time and money. so, ya- i dont know what you want to do with that.

i was pretty gluten lite for 10 years... and my doc only had me on a 2 week challenge- which im assuming wasnt enough for a solid test result. so im glad i didnt do the endoscopy. i think...

i wish i had been psychic enough to get all these tests done before i went on no carb diets, when i actually had D everyday...

Your doctor may not diagnose based on dietary exclusion, resolution of symptoms and then symptom reoccurance when gluten is added back in but your body will. While having a doctor derived diagnosis can be valuable with the high rate of false negatives in testing in the end it's your bodies response that counts for the most.

Looking for help sourcing gluten-free products that do not contain potato or corn derived ingredients. I have other autoimmune conditions (Psoriatic Arthritis and Sjogrens) so I’m looking for prepared foods as I have fatigue and cannot devote a lot of time to baking my own treats.

I am so sorry you're going through this. It's completely understandable to feel frustrated, stressed, and disregarded after such a long and difficult health journey. It's exhausting to constantly advocate for yourself, especially when you're dealing with so many symptoms and positive diagnoses like SIBO, while still feeling unwell. The fact that you have been diligently following the diet without relief is a clear sign that something else is going on, and your doctors should be investigating other causes or complications, not dismissing your very real suffering.

It is just so sad that health care in the United States has come to this.  Health insurance should be available to everyone, not just the healthy or the rich.  My heart goes out to you.  I would not hesitate to have the test and pay for it myself.  My big concern would be how you could keep the results truly private.  I am sure that ultimately, you could not.  A.I. is getting more and more pervasive, and all data is available somewhere.  I don't know if you could give a fake name, or pay for your test with cash.  I certainly would not disclose any positive results on a private insurance application.  As I understand it, for an official diagnosis, an MD needs to review your labs and make the call.  If you end up in the ER, or some other situation, just request a gluten free diet, and say it is because you feel better when you don't eat gluten.      Hang in there, though.  Medicare is not that far away for you, and it will remove a lot of stress from your health care concerns.  You will even be able to "come out of the closet" about being Celiac!

Yes, I've posted a few times about two companies: Request a Test and Ulta Labs. Also, pretty much we can all request any test we want (with the possible exception of the N protein Covid test and I'm sure a couple of others) with Lab Corp (or Pixel by Lab Corp) and Quest. I much prefer Lab Corp for their professionalism, ease of service and having it together administratively, at least in DC. And just so you know, Request a Test uses Lab Corp and Quest anyway, while Ulta Labs uses only Quest. Ulta Labs is cheaper than Request a Test, but I am tired of dealing with Quest, so I don't use them so much.

PS - I think you meant this site, but I don't believe it has been updated in years: http://glutenfreedrugs.com/ so it is best to use: You can search this site for prescriptions medications, but will need to know the manufacturer/maker if there is more than one, especially if you use a generic version of the medication: To see the ingredients you will need to click on the correct version of the medication and maker in the results, then scroll down to "Ingredients and Appearance" and click it, and then look at "Inactive Ingredients," as any gluten ingredients would likely appear there, rather than in the Active Ingredients area. https://dailymed.nlm.nih.gov/dailymed/
