Fructose Malbsorption, Light Bulb Moment Again, Drats!

All this time I knew I had a problem with sugar, apples, bananas, squash, splenda, aspartame, etc. Just thought it was problems with going gluten free. I have seen mention on here many a time about fructose malabsorption and foodmap stuff. Never really paid it any attention until last night when I decided to google it. Like I said, light bulb moment.

Now, I understand why some foods are still messing with me. So here we go again, with another tweaking. But this time I know what i'm doing and looking for. Nothing like practise. Lol.

Bummer, though I'm glad you figured it out. You might like the Yahoo! FM group.

This is a pretty good resource too, by one of the group moderators.

I know how frustrating that is. The same thing happened to me not long after I went gluten free a few years ago. I couldn't eat ANY fruit or any sugar in any form. However, after I completely cut out sugar and fructose for close to a year, I began to be able to eat bananas (don't know why bananas didn't affect me as much) and as my gut healed (I guess), I was able to eat some other fruits again. It has now been about two years since I had any non-fruit sugar, but this past summer I was able to eat a huge bowl of watermelon, canteloupe, kiwi, and grapes every single day with no adverse effects. I still can't eat most fruits that have the skins on (like apples, etc.) because they are harder to digest, but very happily, my fructose problem seems to be manageable. I don't know if this will happen for you, but maybe try cutting out all sugar and stay off the non-fruit sugar long-term if not permanently, if you think it's worth a try. Agave once in a while has been possible for me, as it has a lower glycemic index and is more natural, whereas just a tiny sugar cube affects me as badly as gluten does. Good luck and I hope you will be able to enjoy fruit again!

gleegan- bananas actually can be tolerable with fructose malabsorption- as long as they're more ripe. still im only eating 1/2 a banana at a time.

also- your post gives me hope that in less than a year from now, my fructose issues could get better.

That makes sense since I don't like bananas that are not ripe (I always avoid them if they have ANY green). Thanks for explaining that. Yes, please don't lose hope. As frustrating as it can be to find out there's a new thing we can't have, I have definitely been able to reintegrate things that I thought were gone for good. Sugar overload seems to be a common thing - maybe your body, once recovered, will be able to handle fruit again. :)

I have issues with fructose and fructans too. My fructose test came back negative but I'm sticking to the fodmap diet because I feel better. I had SIBO which exasperated all of my issues. I can have a tiny bit of cooked apple, coconut milk and lemon and lime. That's it for fruit. I can't tolerate any onions, shallots, garlic, scallions, or asparagus. I can have tomato sauce once a week and only one serving, say on spaghetti or pizza. Any more than that and my esophagus flares up and I have heartburn for days. Salad kills me. I can have well cooked corn, potatoes, carrots, green beans, beans, and squash. It feels really weird not to eat fruit and veggies (as well as no gluten, soy or lactose) but I feel so much better. I've always eaten a ton of veggies for variety and nutrition so I feel like I'm being bad. I haven't touched any stone fruits since May and there's a lot of veggies I haven't tried too. Even though what I eat is limited it just feels good not to be in pain. It's wroth trying if you have tried everything else.

I looked further into Thiamax Vitamin B1 by objective nutrients and read all the great reviews. I think I will give this a try. I noticed only possible side affect is possibly the first week so body adjusts. Life Extensions carries Benfotiamine with Thiamine and the mega one you mentioned. Not sure if both in one is better or seperate. some reviews state a laxative affect as side affect. SHould I take with my super B complex or just these 2 and multivitamin? I will do further research but I appreciate the wonderful explanation you provided on Thiamine.

There are other Celiac genes. HLA DQ 2 and HLA DQ 8 show up in people from Northern European descent.   People of Mediterranean descent have HLA DQ 7.  People of Asian descent have HLA DQ 9.   There's other Indigenous populations that have other HLA genes that code for Celiac disease.   Are you still having symptoms?   What do you include in your diet?  Are you vegetarian? Are you taking any prescription medication?  Omeprazole?  Metformin?   Do you have anemia?  Thyroid problems? Are you taking any vitamins or herbal supplements?

There are eight essential B vitamins.  They are all water soluble.  Any excess of B vitamins is easily excreted by the kidneys.   Thiamine is Vitamin B 1.  Thiamine is safe and nontoxic even in high doses.  Benfotiamine and TTFD are forms of Thiamine that the body can utilize very easily.   The form of Thiamine in the supplements you mentioned is Thiamine Mononitrate, a form that the body does not absorb well and does not utilize well.  Only about thirty percent of the amount on the label is actually absorbed in the small intestine.  Less than that can actually be used by the body.  Manufacturers add thiamine mononitrate to their products because it's cheap and shelf-stable.  Thiamine and other B vitamins break down when exposed to light and heat and over time.  Thiamine Mononitrate is a form that does not break down over time sitting on a shelf waiting for someone to buy them.  What makes Thiamine Mononitrate shelf stable makes it difficult for the body to turn into a useable form.  In fact, it takes more thiamine to turn it into a useable form.   Gastrointestinal Beriberi is a localized shortage of Thiamine in the gastrointestinal tract.  High carbohydrate meals can result in gastrointestinal symptoms of Gastric Beriberi.  Fiber is a type of carbohydrate.  So, high fiber/carbohydrate snacks could trigger Gastric Beriberi.   Since blood tests for Thiamine and other B vitamins are so inaccurate, the World Health Organization recommends trying Thiamine and looking for health improvement because it's safe and nontoxic.
